I wonder why itachi wanted to keep madara away from sasuke ?? It cant be for sasuke's eyes cuz madara already has eternal sharingan but then why is madara soo interested in sasuke?? any and all guesses are welcome but my guess is that madara wants to use sasuke for some reason remeber the deidara and sasuke fight tobi saw sasukes sharingan and predicted that sasuke's sharingan would surpass itachi's... so maybe madara wants to evolve his eternal sharingan into something else ?? i dunno maybe ya

i think he is after a power beyond the sharingan itself it might be a stretch but i heard something about the power of the tengu king the originator of the sharingan. the sharingan has all the qualities of the mythical tengu. plus on the walls of the uchiha shrine you see pictures of tengu and when sasuke looked in itachi's mind what he saw looked like a tengu with 4 eyes

he was trying to save his little brother the whole time. he told him to him to use anger and hatred to get strong. itachi wanted him to get this strong, so that he can stand against whats next. you'll see. itachi had good intentions with his brother the whole time. but he never told him because he wanted him to get stronger than him. thus the only way was through hatred.

So every time, Sasuke came to Itachi for help with his ninja training and Itachi would say he's busy and then poke him on the forehead; he actually was implanting techniques and knowledge into Sasuke, without him knowing it. It's so touching, but secretive, and unexpected. What a twist!! =O

The translation I read I read said it was "Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan." And, it's a little shaky. The Japanese-English translation thing is hard to get down EXACTLY.  I think what they meant by "Eternal" or "Permanent" is that it will never blind it's user.
