Yes simsalfred7 that's why she was not as successful. Record labels generally sign an artist and then distribute their material via a record company. There is a huge difference between a label and a company. A record compnay usually dictates how many units will be sold and where. Record labels make their money from the contract with the company. This is why royalties are quite low. Recording artist make money from live shows and endorsement deals. Many new artist are changing this though.

The real reason jasmin Guy wasn't as successful singing as she could have been is because the music industry is fickle. Her popularity hinged on the success of A Different World. The show declined and so did her status as an artist. She is talented but so are a number of other individuals she was competing against for record sales. It's called marketing; I know because I was in the industry.

I remember seeing this video debut at the end of the season finale of "A Different World" back in 1991. I added the cassette single to my slow jam collection. I bought the cd, but it sucked big time. There are only 2 songs on it i liked. This song and "I Don't Have to Justify". That song is the bomb. It's a perfect kiss off for all those people trying to change and define you and can't accept you for who you are. Anyway, the song is very breezy and soothing.

The reason Jasmine didn't blow up as big in music as most would have is because she came out after several seasons of a different world which was a hit and she had become so closely associated with Whitley that many could not see her apart from that role. I remember thinking that wow she sounds good but many wrote her off.
