I am preparing a blog post about the old UK TV adverts for Trio biscuits - which riffed on the Freberg version of the song - and was looking for a good versionof it to embed in the post as a comparison to the adverts.
Your's wins hands down! Brilliant.
If you want to see the finished blog post, it will be up next Wednesday (Sept 16th).
Click my user name for the blog address details or google my username. Cheers and, again, excellent video.
Hi, thanks for the interest in the vid.. seems like years ago now since we made it, lol. I've been checking out your blog.. very cool - love all the old stuff like high chapparel. :)
Mahna Mahna. Search for that in, say, YouTube, and you'll find many options. I think the one in the credits is version three, from the Muppet Show in 1976.
Yes, this is Stan Freberg's version of "The Banana Boat Song." The one you are thinking of is a cartoon called "Calypso Singer" - if anyone has it, I'd just love to see it! It was the entertainment at my third birthday party!
no actually drinkallaround is right. it was aired on Ed Stew Pot Show. this guy just made a puppet version of it. much funnier when you saw the real thing though.
That's where it was aired, man. Stan Freberg recorded it. It's too loud man. There is a 1960's animated version, part of which was on Youtube. It's gone now though. Too sad man.
Part of this was on You Tube bu has since disappeared? Tragic. Surely somebody out there must have this video. Come on guys! I promised to get this for my kids!!!
Trivia: The Banana Boat Song was written by Oscar-winning actor Alan Arkin, while a member of The Tarriers folk-singing group in the 1950s. You can look it up.
Excellent - shame the puppet wasn't actually playing the bongos! Well done anyway. I'm sure there was an animation of this shown by the BBC when there was a transmission cock-up. Anyone remember it?
PS I too also seek the cartoon they made for this song..
This song my father tells me is from the 50's (this spoof version). The cartoon was made in the 60's I think.. The cartoon came out later and was made by someone else for this song. I also remember seeing the cartoon on the children's show "The Great Space Coaster" back in the 80's..
my dad had the original 45 record and when I was a kid used to play it all the time (the other side had a the song television also by stan friedberg) anyways I have been trying to hear this song as the record my dad had got lost.. Thanks again
brilliant-I remember hearing this version as a child on the radio in the 60s. I've often told my children about it ,how fantastic to let them now hear it and watch your brill film
Like crazy man! I've been trying to find the original Stan Freeberg cartoon, the Calypso Singer, but I guess it's not around. This pantomine was great!
I love the use of the Rowlf the Dog puppet! I had one in the late 70s/early 80s.
