  • @pejger012 Thank you so much - means a lot! Vicky

  • Excellent video. Resuming 3 millenaries of art wasn't easy. Congrats.

First manifestations of writing appeared in Uruk. It was pictogramms easy to understand (a fish qualify a fish, for example). Cuneiforms started to appear at the tardive period, before Sargon I.

Ziggurats were made for tutelary god of each city. For the Etemeninkur, the ziggurat you show, it was for Nanna (Sîn for akkadians).

But their exact functions still remain unknown due to the lack of source about it, alas.

  • Thanks so much, Nozoto...I can tell you have researched Ancient Near Eastern much more than I have...I love it visually - so mysterious.

  • @vtg60

I'm just an amateur trying to follow progress of assyriology...

Art is the hardest subject to treat, ancient peoples. Polytheistic religions evolved constantly, and some gods were more important at the neo-sumerian period. Ningišzidda, for example. This god of vegetation slightly lose his importance to Dumuzi, Ištar's husband.

Also, there was a lot of syncretisms, like in ancient Egypt...

I sincerly hope your video will contribute to make more enthusiasts of this culture.

  • 2- if he "hunted" these lions in a man made square, then it only decreases any glory he wanted posthumously! ......a Real warrior would have gone on the land to face those lions!

  • I agree! It just doesn't seem fair to me.

  • these vidz are great!

  • Thanks so much! They take lots of work...and your feedback is appreciated : )

  • Beautiful video man...I enjoyed this immensely!

Do you have anything on Armenians? You seem well versed in near eastern history.

  • On second thought, It would be the Urartu civilization during this general era.....

  • Thanks so much BagratidJ! I'm afraid I don't know much about the Urartu civilization...will have to look into it : )

  • That was fascinating. I looked at the time after it ended and couldn't believe that length of time went by in a flash! Thank you for such a riveting watch. I have a copy of the Inanna sculpture on my wall and I saw the Ishtar Gate while visiting a museum in Germany, but I didn't even know what culture they were from. Thank you.

  • Thanks so much, Tehomet...I really appreciate your feedback! This video is a preview for my students to get interested in a much longer presentation on Ancient Near Eastern Art. The hardest part is selecting what artworks to feature out of a rich treasure of works from this period. I hope to do a video on Ancient Egyptian and Greek art in the near future.
