Trifecta missed an important point, Congress is a check to power, the ballot box is also, but the FINAL CHECK is the jury box. The Fugitive Slave Act was largely unsucessful because Juried then were apprised of their rights to vote not guilty if the law was bad.. I get the feeling that there are many in the silent majority who have no idea that there are now many people in powerful places in our government who think the constitution is no longer valid. They see it as something written long ago under circumstances we don't have today, therefore it should go away. Truth is that we lost this country once we fucked with the constitution and allowed non land owners, woman, and blacks to vote.
