Obviously there are lots of complications which can occur during surgery, but I must say that these posts did scare me quite a bit prior to my surgery for thyroid cancer. I just wanted to point out to anyone else that for the vast majority of these cases, including my own, it is fairly straightforward and painfree without any long term/permenant damage.
Hope you're doing well. I had a total thyroidectomy in Oct 2004 because I had medullary thyroid cancer. The tumor was in the right lobe and was the size of an avacado pit (2 inches long x 1/2 inch wide). They also found a microscopic papillary tumor, in the left lobe, during the pathology. Didn't really experience much discomfort from the surgery and so far, no complications. I've been taking Levoxyl for 2 1/2 years now. It's been working quite well for me.
I hope all is going well for you after your surgery. i had my thyroid entirely removed 10 years ago because of multiple malignant nodules and lymph nodes. I remember having a weak voice after surgery but it got better with time. I wish you the best of luck!
I had mine removed a year ago. And they have cut one of my nerves of my vocal cord. left one is paralysed. Oops. could not speak for 6 months still having problems for life. Wish i never done it.
i'm doing okay i just had another surgery for it. i had a neck disection as well. part of my face is numb and will be numb for the rest of my life and my shoulder is pretty sore right now. good luck with your procedure. if you have to have a neck disection don't let them take your muscle. they don't have to.
