  • 1:48 looks like me bowling

  • That was one hell of a sniper shot from Pelluw. Especially with a musket, considering it could rarely hit the side of a barn on a good day.

  • @gardenfreak1000 that made me laugh as well, I love the protocol and their manners.

  • exceptionally fine shot sir!....if i may say so sir you may mr bowles, you may

  • I have this entire series on DVD and I never tire of watching them.

  • I love Capt. Pellew!!!

  • @jland3622 Capt. Pellew is a hard-ass, but he's fair and brave. I look up to him myself.......

  • next up..fire ships!

  • *sings* In the Navy! Yes you can sail the seven seas! In the Navy! Yes you can put your mind at ease!

They want YOU, they want YOU, they want you as a new recruit!

  • She ship's on FIRE!! FIRE!!!! FIIIRREE!!!!!

  • Flying the Enemies colours, is a legitamate ruse de guerre even today, providing your own colours are hoisted before opening fire. In this instance the Papillion was not flying French colours, it was a pennant used to gauge wind direction and speed not an Ensign. That it was refered to as the Enemies Colours by Mr Hornblower is incorrect but this is Drama, the point was that the French thought she was still French and Hornblower did nothing to persuade them otherwise.

  • French Is Called Papillon Not Papillion Just To Let U Know

  • @southythegrimreaper I regret to inform you that I disagree with you, French is not "Called" Papillon, French is called French in English and Francais in French, it is a butterfly that is called papillon in French, although in this instance it is the ship that is being called Papillon and not butterflies. Just to let you know!

  • @padjur Thank you. I like knowing the real history. I think that H was young enough that he didn't know the ediquite rules of war. Mr. Bowels was discusted but it would have cost hundreds of lives to be proper. H got it that there shouldn't be any rules in war. He took out the officers first as his own had been taken out. Then he went down the line, shooting as accurately as he could and he had the expert men to do it. He got the casche of the other ship, did he not? That's why it blew? :)

  • lol pellows face when hornblower destroys flagship is pricless.

  • @MegaSheepdogg Yes. And I believe he was compassionate toward the French and their losses as was Horatio in the next minute when he didn't respond to his own men but told Mathews to get boats out to pick up the survivors. Both he and Pellew thought of the lives of men first. Weither it was their own men or not. I like that about Pellew that he doesn't treat his men as things and he's passed that virtue on to Horatio. He gets Horatio because H is so much like him. It's the reason he kills S.

  • Ah Pellows is great.

  • Even I have to admit it was a bit of a douche move for Hornblower to keep the French flag up.

  • FIRE!!! FIRE!!! FIREEEEE!!! FIREEEE!!!

  • 7:35 and that, ladies and gentlemen is why Pellew is the mother fucking captain. He will fucking end your ass.

  • "You may mr. Bowles... You may."

  • At 2:13 Hornblower is standing *behind* the cannon when he shouts fire O.o

  • 1:40 as if they didn't notice the red coated marines. Bloody Frogs! :D

  • i LOLD so hard when pellew shot mr simpson ; if i was horation... i wouldve shot simpson!

  • It was common practice to fly the enemy colors and it wasn't considered unfair. Both sides did it. Part of the Captain's job was trying to figure out who was really friend or foe because the colors didn't necessarily mean anything.

  • nooooooooooooooooooooo , u shoulda shot em!!!!!!!!!!

  • seen this hundred times, and this movie never gets old.

  • If only self centered creeps like Simpson got it like that in real life. Captain Pellew is a hard-ass, he's fair but hard. I admire the guy.

  • What no promotion?lol never saw this show before.....but i gotta say....i love it. thanks

  • "Not worth the powder."

    Excellent.

Thank you, Bramblefox, for posting this.

  • DID HE SAY MR. BALLS?!!!!

    8:02

  • @Redrum200proof It's Mr. BOWLES, not balls. It's in the credits somewhere if memory serves.......

  • I'd have shot the bastard.

  • FINALLY !!! a real 10 paces in a duel !! 5 each.... obviously someone did their research !! yes....

Simpson- the bastard !!!! death to the bastard !!

  • French Corvettes no match for the Royal navy.

  • i have to point out that one of those frigates was french!

  • Thank you Bramblefox. Bravo!

  • *bows*

  • Once again it can be noted that Pellew is a pimp amongst men.

  • My, my, it's fun to watch, but everything's so incredibly incorrect. I wish they had had some sort of consultant for naval history. By way of example, it's not very wise to stand right behind a gun when it is fired. In the novels, people get smashed standing in the way of a gun quite often ... And, most notably, it was considered a war crime and not a ruse de guerre to engage in battle while flying foreign colours.

  • Didn't the cannons on naval ships at this time use flintlocks as well?

  • yea, in masters and commanders they did

  • hehe, it´s also terribly unwise to stand right behind someone who´s engaged in a pistol duel... oh the things people did in those days to give the cameraman a better shot ;-)

  • Yes and Mr. Bowles reminds Horatio how it is against all the Articles of War to fly foreign colours.

Horatio is well aware that it is a war crime but he doesn't care. What is "incredibly incorrect" about someone, *gasp* committing a war crime? Horatio does it at least twice more in the series, both times in the Duchess and the Devil, one instance actually was a plan approved by Captain Pellew.

  • Dear me, you're right, I didn't notice. I spoke with Hornblower of the books in mind. Hornblower would not break the established rules of conduct in war. Which he is an Englishman and not some bleedin' foreign bugger. Or so I thought. Now that I think about it, doesn't look Ioan Gruffudd a trifle bit French? -- "Incredibly incorrect" still stands to a lot of other things, though. Look at the speed with which the ships move, and so on and so on.

  • By the way, Hornblower is a newly commissioned midshipman. Who is to say that he is a SMART midshipman who knows enough to not stand behind cannons when they are being fired? ;)

  • Weeeell, not standing behind guns is adaptive. No need to be smart, mother nature sorts it out. For the midshipman population at least...

  • @Kju98s3 Well, there wouldn't any French left to complian, would there?

  • One of the best series around... reminds me of Honor Harrington, the Road to the Rim series, or the MidShipman series (in print). Thank you.

  • Wonderful movie, thankyou bramble!

  • You're welcome, my dear! :D

  • 2:42

  • Oh Simpson...he is such a jerk but I have to say the actor playing Mr. Simpson is damn good. I love Horatio Hornblower so much. I sill wonder how at the end he manages to put his arm behind his back after being shot.

  • *nods* That's the great thing about this series--the villians are awesome. I hate and love 'em all. XD

  • @Bramblefox Simpson is really one dimensional, he's created much better in the books.

  • I would like to know why they stopped shooting the episodes. I would of loved to have seen the series run through to the end.

  • Well thanks to Bramblefox and others on youtube you can watch the entire series. I don't know why they stopped filming because I think there were a couple other stories from the book series they could have used.

  • Ioan Gruffud says the series is pretty much over because each episode is so prohibitively expensive to make.

  • @Justlov4 It's a trade secret. You see, the actor wasn't actually shot. It was just cleverly disguised.

  • @CuddlyBadger haha I know! I was just saying in terms of the story, if someone was actually shot where Hornblower was shot...I don't think it would be that easy to just put your arms behind your back. I know the actor was not shot. That would really suck. :P

  • @Songsmirth Could be...He was shot in the shoulder area so I was like..huh...but it could be a macho thing. Just a minor detail I noticed.

  • @Justlov4 Yes but I understand that sometimes things bug a person! I still want to know why they wear those white bands around their arms! But as you say, a minor detail. lol :) Songs

  • @Songsmirth the armbands are to distinguish friend from foe during action aboard the Papillon. In the dark during the heat of battle, it can be rather hard for the sailors and Marines to tell who is who.....

  • @Darthbelal Thank you. I've been asking and asking that question. it's one of those things that bug you. :) Songs

  • i tried pausing where horatios eyes bug and ended up with him pulling the face of a wombat having a fit. XD

  • *dies* Oh dear...

  • Thank you so very much for posting THE favorite episode of this wonderful series. It brings the book to life.

  • You're very welcome! :D

  • God everytime I watch this movie, I want to literally choke the life out of Simpson, mace him, just mess up good . . . . sorry but he gets my blood running :D

  • I know, he's such a flippin' sadistic bugger. *nods* I know exactly what you mean.
