  • Instead of the cap that you inserted here, couldn't you just go with the wood as long as you use a food safe finish?

  • @nicholls611 Yes just seal it up good.

  • Thanks for the reply hayden, can this method be used to make a shaving lather bowl?

  • Hi Thanks for the Vid

    Very interesting little project.

CAn you tell me what Paste your putting on your grit paper before you sand up

    Regards...

  • It's paste wax and mineral oil I mix it 10 parts wax and one part oil.

  • Thanks for the Reply Good Work. Very Enjoyable to watch :)

  • I´ll try to "steal" this thing... burger press!!

  • Man your´e fast !!

  • Another great project Carl. Please keep up the super work.

  • Wow, really nice piece. I love watching your videos Carl, a real inspiration. Whenever i try to hollow out a bowl i always vibrate the lathe and it pops of or snaps. Are your tools exceptionally sharp? You move it so effortlessly and it never bites or moves. Im sure this is from you great skill, but im not sure how im doing it wrong. About to embark on making some "babooshka bowls" from differentt sized whitetop burls. They are pretty gummy and i would hate for them to snap or crack.

  • Thank. When say they cracked, is the wood dry or still wet? If it is wet, that might be why it is cracking. When it starts to get thin, I take just light cuts and yes I try and keep my tools sharp. good luck on the bowls. Send me some pictures.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Great job. Have you ever colored any of your work.

  • Thanks, No I haven't tried coloring.

  • Carl

Nice video I like it . Funny thing happened to me the day before I got your video. Wife and I were making hamburgers for the freezer and I told her we needed some kind of a press to make these burgers consistently the same and flat. Next day your video arrives. Good job Carl and the guy who said you have a creative mind is right on. Mitch

  • Hi Mitch, That's funny Perfect timing.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Can you comment on what tools you are using during the videos? I can't always tell. Thank you.

  • Sorry I Forget sometimes.

  • I didn't use it on the press just the box. It was so thin that I didn't think it would hold together. I put some pictures on my facebook page. Also I put the PVC cap int the cole jaws and thinned it out so it would fit a little looser.

  • Great I'll check it out when I get a chance I'm on vacation.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • That's cool. We borrow a plastic hamburger press from my MIL whenever we do burgers for the grill. This would make a nice alternative :) This is going on my project list!

  • Well I made one but the only piece of wood I had that was even close to being large enough was some yellow pine I got at the Log Cabin Factory. I had to make the wall real thin. Even then the 4" PVC cap is a tight fit. I think I'll turn it down a little so it fits in there better. I still need to make the press. I sealed the whole thing with CA glue so maybe it wont crack and it'll hold together for a while.

  • I am not sure I would use the CA glue on the press part. I am not sure if it is food safe. Good luck, would love to see some pictures.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Awesome Job Carl. Must be for Sliders. Your creativity is amazing. I still walk out and chuck up a piece of wood and walk out with the same dang thing. You ever turn Pecan? I threw some up there the other day and that was tough going. Researched online and folks were calling it Pecan-crete. Gave me a good laugh but boy are they right. Again nice job. One more thing... What did you call that insert? Looks like a squared off PVC cap.

  • No I have never turned Pecan. Sounds hard maybe like Cocobolo. Yes it is just an end cap for a 3 inch pipe.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Nice piece of wood you choose, Carl! It look fantastic.

  • Thanks,

  • That would really be handy for get togethers and also a great conversation piece at that time too. Thanks for sharing.

    Leonard

  • Thanks Leonard,

  • nice video, is it also for your daughters dolls, cos it's pretty small. If not, find another designer, ask your boys. lol

  • nice video, is it also for your daughters dolls, cos it's pretty small. If not, find another designer, ask your boys. lol

  • Yes maybe a 4"or 6"

  • Nice project, thanks /Mats

  • Thanks Mats,

  • very cool but those burgers are going to be kinda small Carl, i'll need a triple lol

  • Yes you might want to use a 4"or 6"

  • Carl,

Another really good one. Have you done a mortar and pestle yet?

  • Yes but not on video.

  • nice turning carl keep it up

    take care

    robbie

  • Thanks Robbie, how have you been?

  • Thanks for sharing Carl. I know it is a lot of work to share and just wanted to say how much I appreciate you doing so. Hope to have a lathe one day and you have been a great source of inspiration. Thanks again.

  • Thank you,

  • Is the sanding wax you use food safe?

  • Someone said it was but I sealed it up with salad bowl oil to be safe.

  • Thats cool. I'm gonna make one of those tomorrow. It must rain maple wood up there where you live. I have to pay for it. But I do have a lot of cedar trees on my property. Oak,Holly, Dogwood, that kind of stuff. Well another great video, keep em coming. Thank you for posting them for all of us out here.

    Tom

  • Thanks Tom,

You should have fun with this one.

    Carl

  • very cool Carl, Just courious as to where you come up with the ideas to turn. I get my ideas from watching you. LOL, great job.

  • This project a friend on facebook made one and asked me to do a video.

  • your video make me to cald down !

  • beautiful job

  • Thanks,

  • Thank you TheGamerDude41 I will try that out.

  • I have tried using that method of finishing I have gone right down to 4000 grit with the lathe at 450 rpm but it still leaves those tiny lines. How do you stop it from doing that?

  • @angussbb im no where near as good as HaydenHD but i noticed this also and i started pressing harder with the sand paper. As far as RPM's i keep mine constant most of time.

  • Try turning the speed back up and sanding sealer might help to.

  • cool project! i need to try this one out!

    Colin

  • Thanks Colin,

  • my grandad has just asked me to make him a steak shaped one lol

  • A steak shaped one now I would like to see that Daniel.
