I salute every one of you because you have shown without a doubt that you have a heart and that it is filled with the very best that humanity has to offer. Yes, we are very special creatures and really knowing this is perhaps the best miracle there is.
Boo! Prior and Harper were supposed to get a scene in heaven with Prior's lost cat. I love this miniseries so so much but i HATE that they had to make cuts.
This is the movie's interpretation of heaven, not what yours or mine would be like. No one here posting is dead are they? Each one is different...there are many mansions..(meaning places, levels, etc). You'll be in a place comfortable and revelant to the life you led and there will be judgement. You are judged and forgiven by the measure you judge and forgive. No one goes higher or lower than intended. We don't all belong in the same place. It's apparant that Ethel wants to forgive, but....
@TranceTips I'm guessing that Mike Nichols was not only making a nod to Jean Cocteau (_Orphée_) but also to Powell and Pressburger's _A Matter of Life and Death_.
Sarcastic angel... that's indeed a role cut for Em. :) I would believe that this must have been quite 'risky' to show. There are still many offended by two people kissing, but indeed it would have been better with them tonguing or something.

i find it odd that they included this bit with the Jewish prayer. After all, Judaism attacks homosexuality as much as the other two Abrahamic religions do. I wish this play had taken a more atheistic stance, instead of apparently embracing Judaism this way.
Without religion insanity would only be insanity, but with religion, it becomes an accepted form of mass hallucination. No wonder you cant imagine the play without it.
I think you make a very valid point. Judaism laid the cornerstone for western homophobia, and that should never be forgotten.
That said, its track record of social tolerance (perhaps because Jews have always been a cultural and religious minority and therefore have some empathic bond with other persecuted groups) is considerably better than the other two Abrahamaic faiths.
@MeatballsMarlowe Nope it does not. Islam attacks homosexuality more than Christianity and Judaism put together. The death penalty for homosexuality exists in 2011 ONLY in some islamic countries. So you are wrong, Judaism does not attack homosexuality as much as Islam. Christianity does not attack it as much as islam. But of course, your problem is with Jews, that is quite obvious. God forbid anyone should shine a positive light on Jews or Judaism. You don't hide your anti semitism well.
@ariamne1 No, I am not anti-Semitic and I am an admirer of many works of art that embrace Judaism. But I am critical of ALL religion, particularly when it is homophobic. Okay, maybe I was wrong in saying that Judaism attacks homosexuality as much as Islam. I apologize for that statement. But the Torah DOES attack it, even if it's a small amount, and that's why it struck me as wrong for this play to completely ignore that and just embrace the religion blindly.
@MeatballsMarlowe true...overall jews are the most tolerant to homosexuals though as they are rarely 'religious' but more 'traditional'. When there are high amounts of jewish people the place is usually liberal.
@PhillAlexandros That religion and the law are worth nothing if they can't show us how to care for those in most dire need of our help. That we are all adrift, and "race, taste, and history" shouldn't prevent us from forming the type of communities that can help us deal with tragedy. And that, above all, we have a debt to make the world a more liveable place.
@PhillAlexandros "there are no gods here, no ghosts and spirits in America, there are no angels in America, no spiritual past, no racial past, there's only the political, and the decoys and the ploys to maneuver around the inescapable battle of politics."
that quote sums it all up. God left America and politics stepped in. and instead of children of god, everyone is a political commodity and the moral is finding a sense of being in spite of it
@georgedrometer and God, according to the play, abandoned America in San Francisco in 1906, which is where the gay community found its voice and rallied together when AIDS was tearing it apart

"He's a fag, he's an office clerk...and now look, he's saying Kaddish for Roy Cohn" That line and the way Louis says it always cracks me up!
The scene when he does the prayer with Ethel's help is one of my favorite scenes in the film.

I can't imagine this play with the religious references removed, it would be unrecognizeable.

That life is far more complicated than mainstream religions tell us. and we should be very thankful for that fact.

a bisexual angel?
kellyjelly1235 2 years ago
According to the story angels are hermaphrodites.. both male and female sex organs. I doubt if our mania for labeling each other applies to angels.
jonwiley 2 years ago 11
thanks for the insight. i was a little confused.
kellyjelly1235 2 years ago
@kellyjelly1235 you have to be human, and adhere to society's labeling system to be bisexual. the angel of america(history) is neither.
