this is awesome dude, cheers for uploading. out of interest, would you use the same technique on a photo? I've seen a few examples of people doing similar style artwork on photographs and was just wondering if the original piece changes the way you'd approach inking?
I love photoshop because of it's precision regardless of your skill level in drawing but in the end I like corel painter better because it feels more natural ^_^ that and it came free with my intuos4 (laughs) I still wanna get photoshop later though ^^;
@xxblazingKiLLjoYxx Yeah it's really simple ^_^ basically like paint but with a layer option and a whole bunch of more tools and options at your disposal. You can choose the type of paper also (I find this option weird but ehh..) Hope this helps! (and sorry if I rambled ^^;)
I still say old school pen and brush have a way better look to them . Photoshop gives it to sharp and to hard of a inked line . You can't get the same feel with Photoshop as you get going old school .
So is the only sure way of getting nice clean lines on the fly using a WACOM by drawing/sketching in Corel Painter? It seems like Photoshop is incapable of letting me get nice clean lines free-hand with the brush tool. The pen tool is far too time consuming to get something that a lot of people could get in half the time if they just used different tools or what not.
your work is amazing may I ask what your brush settings were for this video I hate how my lines are never this clear I know you described it earlier but I just wanted to know your brush
And starting to notice that pen tool is such a pain in the ass! Maybe I'm a slow worker but damn! computer and software is supposed to make the process faster and easier, is there really no other easier way of inking? (without using a tablet)
Still very impressive even if it is "OLD". Had to be a pain doing vector but I know what you mean about Painter. I've recently made the switch too. So much more dynamic than photoshop's brushes. I'd argue with the whole not spilling ink or breaking nibs, it's even better than traditional nib pen inking.
also, what are the brush settings you keep on adjusting? i see you rotating the nib, but i'm curious how you get the marks that start small, get larger in the middle, and then again decrease in size as though most pressure was applied in the middle of the stroke. would you mind explaining? great video by the way, thanks for posting!
You have such a beautiful talent. I never thought a different width can be used even in Pen Tool. Maybe that because I never try to discover it. Thanks for showing this!
I have 2 questions, hopefully you can answer both. Are you inking drawings that you've drawn from paper and then scanned. Or are you inking digitally drawn pictures? I was always a bit confused about this. I would like to learn how to line draw in Photoshop, but I'm still a beginner to all of this. Also, It would be great to draw like you, would you happen to have any tips or suggestions? If so, that would be greatly appreciated! -Thanks
Hello, i cant seem to fill in my stroke path instead the backgrounds fill in and i selected foreground? and the path is closed... can some1 help me pls?
Interesting tech, I have a similar one on illustrator. I always thought PS pen tool was a bit annoying. I want to give this tech a try BUT:
here goes my question, when I try this on PS, It eaither doesn't show the fill path/Brush Stroke option, or when it does, it doesn't fill the selection, but the background behind, leaving the shape white. Should I make them as Vector Masks or creating a path? :/
Kudos for using the pen tool. I think it's an annoying piece of crap =D. though the results are beautiful and smooth. I stick with pencil or brush. :3
If I ever find out how to make a video in the same fashion; while the work is being done. I will upload it showing how to create an action in Photoshop or you can send me a message requesting the directions. It can be done in as little as 10 steps or less but don't quote me since I don't have my notes in front of me. :)
I think @Doublearts0004 might referring to the type of brush you choose or when using the pen tool and seeing the circle to let you know your lines has connected for a closure. Also, do you know you can create an action in Photoshop and associate it with a hot key (one or two clicking) to simplify: rt click, selecting "stroke a path" then back again to select "delete a path". This can be done even if you change the brush to accommodate the varying size and brush choices.
Hey, I own both a graphics tablet and Painter, and I still found this useful. It's best to embrace ALL options when it comes to digital art. I learned something here that I could use. Thanks.
@ihopeutubedies now to help you back. when you fill the paths sometimes you may have your selection to "subtract" rather than "add" check that. make sure its "add" (check the boxes that overlap eachother those icons) i had that problem too before i fixed it. so good luck.
@shadowkunai12 Glad I could help. And thanks! what you said helped. At 1st I didn't know what u meant but after a minute I foud the overlapping layers you were talking about. You have a deviantart acc by the way?
Wow, I learned so much from this. I've always just tried to ink freehand with Photoshop and my lines never looked that good. This looks so clean, which is perfect. Thanks so much for uploading this!!
How long it takes to get used to this technique? Looks like you have to try hard for a couple of years to nail that lines. btw, nice site, very good tutorials :D
@Doublearts0004 I don't understand the question. If you're referring to the fineness of the pixels along the edges, its because I draw at very high resolution. 72ppi will not produce a fine line art.
@Doublearts0004 I know what you mean. Because you're creating vector lines you have to make it all one big shape (which can be difficult). Plus you'll have to add in the details after like the eyes and nose, the things that aren't connected to the main outline. I have yet to find a program that will actually allow me to connect the lines from one vector object to another.
trying to do this. One thing I can't figure out that may help me in the future is how do I shortcut in a command to end a path? and then put in a shortcut to fill it?
this tutorial is a good refresher for some of us animators. nice to see a different angle used in inking. thanks for posting. incidentally, could please tell us the name of the song, or who sings it. my crew and i love it and we cannot find it anywhere.
can anybody tell me how to get into brush settings in cs4 its moved and i cant seem to find it, shape dynamics is essential! also i have a question whats the difference between illustrator and photoshop? is either easier to ink in?
I do believe he, along with many others prefer Painter to digitally ink, usually because of the available tools, like the cover pencil and the scratchboard tool. Plus, Painter's got a lot more options built into it to support tablets, more specifically, the Inutos tablet.
its the pen tool..
