Saludos.
This is the beauty of Domingo... that day he'd be singing Tamino and the next he'd be straight into Verdi's Otello. His versatility was second to none.
I agree with the below comments about the scooping. He is very scoopy and inaccurate it is however still beautiful. hehehe the latino singers are notorious for such technique
Waaaaay too much scooping. It's not Puccini. Examples: Dies GUHUOOOOOOOOOTERBILT. Mein HUUUUUUUUEEERZ...he leaves almost an 8th note worth of time to scoop to every note above an E. The piece, like all Mozart arias, requires finesse and beautiful line and the scooping interrupts the beauty of the line.
There are bigger voices who can sing this rep in the appropriate style: see Jonas Kaufman sing Un'Aura Amorosa.
to all the placido haters here. the fact that he navigated his dramatic tenor voice around a song for a leggiero tenor is nothing short of miraculous. it also explains the portamenti. I agree that people should sing in their fach. but an act of disrespect simply for trying? please. it is no more disrespectful than any performer is in performing a piece where they do not have the definitive recording. just enjoy the music.
@iddybiddygiddy I agree, Domingo is here not even as bad as he usually is!. He reaches for sure the upper side of middle class. IMO Domingo was a lyric tenor with a short range who, in order to survive in a world which did not require too many high tones, pushed his voice to dramatic, therefore I don't see in this rendition any "short of miraculous" case.
Thank you very much for posting, I have listen more because of Domingo than because of the aria ;-))) I simply love him singing in German... But I completely share your admiration for the great Fritz Wunderlich. Greetings, Esther :-)
@SogniAzzurri Fritz Wunderlich es la espiritualidad, la técnica y el buen gusto. Domingo es un simple y tosco aprendiz sin sensibilidad solo potencia...........y mal calibrada.
Even if Placido is not at his best in this, he is still better than 95% of the tenors out there, and there's no doubting his fine voice and technique. Fun to listen to, and very musical - just doesn't suit his voice as much as some of the other stuff. Definitely not as good as Wunderlich, but not too shabby.
I believe that because this was a response to Wunderlich everyone decided they hate Domingo. LOL. Domingo has achieved more than even the best tenors could dream. Is he the best Tamino out there no. Anyway, there isn't much to Tamino's character other than he is in love with a picture and he goes through tests to find his love. Domingo with his beautiful voice fails in style but he has a great voice period. He can sing whatever he is paid to sing and apparently this was one.
Wunderlich la cantaba mejor, es cierto, pero esta version es sensacional como todo lo que hace placido domingo, no solo un excelente cantante sino un excelente musico con todas las letras.
Tessitura, passaggio, portamento.....expert knowledge, the more we have of it, the less we can enjoy...the question is: Do I like it or not? Domingo could do the best he can (and he does), I still won´t like it, because I have a special vision of this aria, an expectation. Most of us do have special favorite singer for special roles, that doesn´t mean they are the best ever, but the best for me (as art is a matter of taste, I am the one to decide for me). In this case: Wunderlich!
JPD060, No way! Not at all! Besides the lack of sense for Mozart style which shows in his abuse of portamento and his monochromatic characterization, Domingo is not able to hold a single phrase like FW. Just listen in 1:45 "die Liebe die Liebe" (which sounds awful) and compare to FWs rendition and there is nothing more to be said. To post this as video answer to Fritz Wunderlich is an act of disrespect for that GREAT TENOR Fritz Wunderlich!
Tamino with a spinto voice? Well, Domingo isn't very well suited for this, it's quite one-dimensional and demonstrated, without much internal emotions, Tamino is an intellectual, enlightened character. Not a brute.
If you have a heavier voice, Idomeneo, the tenor part of the geharnishde mann, the high priest in idomeneo (one of the versions) and indeed Tito, too, is suitable.
You are giving such a great comments. It is a pity, that Mr.Domingo is much older than You He can not learn more from You .Like Le`Elisse D àmoure ? Men like Pamino ?
It is a rather High aria.. though.. the highest note is only an A-flat... much like "Una furtiva lagrima" in Le` Elisse D'amoure`. Here, though, most of the piece hangs around the E-flat and Higher...making us think it's higher than it really is... once you have practiced it...it's rather an easy piece to sing...with ample breath support that is..lol
uhm.... I hate to disagree but this is an Aria which many tenors shy away from because it is indeed a very difficult one. Not the least of which is because of the last page. The tessitura is the key here. It stays in the passaggio and does not let up which is where an under-developed voice/breath support technique will flounder.
This aria is from another time... when men's love was 'pure', decent, respectful, sincere, godly... nowadays, sex has crushed love... Men like Pamino are long gone... fortunately, Mozart puts them in his wonderful, eternal music.
This Domingos rendition gives me hope, maybe i too can survive with this piece in audition with my lirico-spinto voce....I think Tamino is the only Mozart role which suits all kinds of tenorfachs. At least at the beginnig of the career. This Domingos effortless version is great proof of it! (Of course there is no better than Wunderlich.)
You can, the key is to breath and support correctly, if the placement is even a slightly false, it is not going to work, Mozart will "punish" in the end which gives no mercy...if i can sing it, so can you....

Very good diction and control of voice, the trademarks of Domingo.
That said, PD's voice is NEVER my cup of tea for want of more character. It is too generic. A personal taste, nothing to offend this great singer.

No. Nice try but really not for him. The strain is felt despite the musicality. This is simply too high tessitura for him.
