And as far as any books he could recommend, he's 100% right, find a great teacher. Of course, talent helps, too. I studied with THREE great teachers, Joe Carbone, Don Arnone and Billy Bauer, I still sucked...lol.
Enjoyed hearing you play.. Check out Bobby Montoya..one of Johnny's prize students..Bobby plays Johnny's rendition of " The Shadow of Your Smile.." Part of it at least...
It is a hybid recording, part Vibroverb amp and acoustic picked up by the camera mic. Johnny told me he used an ampeg with the speaker facing straight up in the air for live gigs once. I don't know how he recorded in the studio, but it sure sounds great.
Is this recorded hybrid - part amp and part mic on the guitar - it sounds nice.
Great playing - I love Johnny Smith and he had the best tone ever D'Angelico/Dearmond / some say a Gibson amp and probably hyrid recording with an RCA 44 or 88 - who knows.?
I learned from three sources, a good teacher for the basics, listening to older jazz as well as all types of guitarists, and good books like Chord Chemistry by Ted Greene. My jazz playing and writing is more what folks have termed "Garage Jazz" since it incorporates different styles, latin, surf, etc under the jazz roof. I like Chet Atkins as well as Andy Summers. I'll be posting more later this summer.
Nice playing, and nice guitar. Guitars like that have to be treated with extreme care. I have Johnny Smith's recordings in a box set, he's an amazing player. Not taking anything away from Wes,but in my opinion he has nothing on Johnny Smith.

I believe he recorded direct to board.
He wasn't happy with amps before he had the ampeg or what he called "fountain of sound".
