jjhoops is correct, it is called a dogbox transmission. The teeth on the gears are square thus having a lower tolerance between them giving it a mechanical whining sound.

Straight cut gears are used for reliability in a race car which generates extreme torque. The engagement load (power) is distributed more evenly in 100 percent engagement of the teeth. This is more important than the tiny theoretical disadvantages of inefficient energy loss though sound.

@mikeb1444 Sort of, it's got a BMW designed racing block set up to the GT3 class displacement specifications for V8's so it's the same basic block from the M3 but it's got all their racing bits on it. It's really a completely different engine when you get down to it but the genetic line puts it down as a similar engine as the M3 one.

That transmission whine annoys me so much - I couldn't watch beyond the first minute. Also, I hate flat-plane crank V8s. They all drone tediously. Either make your V8 scream like a Ferrari or a Triumph Stag or make it bellow like a Corvette. Better still, stop nailing four-pots together and give us back naturally-aspirated straight-6s! Come on, bring back the old S54, recast it in magnesium and lengthen the stroke to give it more torque... bring it up to 3498cc! Like the old M535i and M635CSi...

@shocker175 - if there's that much transmission whine, it shows that there is a fundamental inefficiency in the gearbox. A proper manual or dual-clutch auto is much more efficient - a DCT is as fast, too.

@japster1358 - clearly, yes. Since the laws of physics dictate that you cannot create or destroy energy, only convert it from one form to another, energy into the gearbox = energy out of the gearbox. The sound here (which is a form of energy) is being created by the motion of the gearbox, and is making the paper cone in the microphone move at a certain frequency (this is kinetic energy). Therefore, the kinetic energy of the gearbox output shaft must be less than that on the input shaft.

Don't helical cut gears impart a little bit of lateral motion on the shaft that holds them? Maybe they went to straight cut gears to minimize that, and put all of that load on the bearings.

@actng Thats true, but she did it in the dry and without other cars on the track i think, this is a wet lap and theres lots of racers. That said, she is one hell of a driver, i loved that episode of TG.

Also i must say, that vette' on the straight at the end got properly OWNED!!! :D Just wish we could see the Speedometer and the rev counter :(

it's more or less the 4.0 liter v8 s65 engine from the m3. It has a crossplane crankshaft, while the m3 GT2 has a flatplane crankshaft.
