  • My buddy Mike just rebuilt mine, looks /works like brand new.

  • This game scared me as a kid...so damn hard....

Love how many of the same sounds are in Robotron.

  • This game is addictive!

  • I dare think of how many quarters I put in Defender machines from '83-'86.

  • This game basically made my family's bank. Dad was a veep at Williams when this came out. Talk about exciting times. Had one in our basement along with other Williams machines. But Defender was by far the best.

  • gotta learn to reverse more dude, good game

  • i played this game so much in 82/83 i had HUGE calouses on my thumb from reversing............ GO DEFENDER!!!

  • wow you are a great defender......

  • Excellent video and setup.

  • Great game! So it's not just me that thinks the red label is homocidal? Any idea how to tone it down a bit or if there's a saner version (red label is the only one I could get working, after downloading 'UI32')? I'm playing with a flippy flappy flightstick for a joystick, with smart, thrust and hyperspace all under my thumb at present, struggling to get past 30K on this thing - and I'm someone who clocked the original in the arcades on 5 occasions! Seriously wrong joystick for this... :o?

  • @bigglyguy . a joystick is going to be too sloopy. the panel i got off of ebay way back. the green label defender MAME ROM plays more like the typical arcade would.

  • @bigglyguy Yea you really need to get a new controller. I use a controller that I got from radio shack. It looks just like a ps2 controller. It is very responisive and you can map the keys anywhere you want to. I use L1 for Flip. R1 for thrust, X for fire, O for smart bomb and Square for hyperspace. I actually like it just as much or even better than the arcade. If you own a ps2 you can get midways arcade treasures which has defender 1-2 and you can modify the difficulty. Must be ps2 ver.

  • @theelusiveone Do not get the midway ps1 version cause the controls are horrible. Good luck.

  • @theelusiveone Cheers. Reviews of Midway AT suggest the games are not original - but the Defender version is good, right? Proper sound effects and everything? If so I may be buying a PS2. Anyone want a 2nd hand X-Box..?

  • @bigglyguy They had a version for the ps1 and the ps2. The ps2 version feels and looks like it plays in the arcade. They did change the name to Defender 2. Maybe the reviews you read were for the ps1 version because that version was not good. Yes the game is very good on the ps2 and the sound and graphics are the same. You can get a ps2 cheap and modify it and play burned old games for free also. Have fun.

  • If I had a nickel for every quarter I spent on that machine...

  • You passed the 4th wave has a 50K score which is good but no smart bombs you are doomed ! I feel envy I admit it because that's what I exactly how I want to play Defender and Stargate again....the control panel but I don't want a full arcade.Because I already have one (a NEO GEO). It was difficult for you to find the control panel?

  • @zombee38 Stargate sucked, Defendant was and is the best video game ever. The trick is to keep a few men after you save them from capture so it slows the pace down and you have time to react better.

One day when I make a lot of money I will find one of these and put it in the dining room corner!

  • Thanks for the memories.

  • Man I remember walking home from Southdale with raw knuckles on my left hand from playing this thing. Nice game, thanks for the vid.

  • I'm trying to find a game that's something like this. Except there were green dinosaurs that wandered on the ground turning the people into monsters. Does anyone know the name?

  • Ah ! The memories - the sounds - the frustration - the blisters on my hands ! This and Missile Command were my favourite games of the 80's and on the arcade setting would clock them and spend hours on them - thanks for posting !

  • my friend used to have this arcade game at his house. it was fucking awesome!

  • That's not the original panel, that's a Stargate panel which is the sequel to Defender.

  • Got to watch that lander it will always throw that last second bullet at you and get you almost everytime!!

  • Man I use to get 1,000,000 alot on Defender around 950,000 everything you destroy is a free man its still my favorite!!!

  • You play like I do now, but back in the day when you could find this game all over the place, I used to go full speed, save the smart bombs, and not wait for any pod intersections. I used to kill the pods one by one. I am older too and you play a nice game.

  • I surrender!!!

  • And of course had I read the full description I would not have inquired if U'd flipped it.

I have no clue the difficulty that the machine was set @, but I had much fun!

    Timothy

    :o)

  • What I would like 2 know is if U have ever flipped the arcade game. I have on 2 seperate occaisions in SF during the 80z

  • I really enjoyed this; it does take me back; I used to do about as well.

  • I am watching this from the edge of my seat. 30 years later, and Defender is still the most intense videogame ever made. I feel sorry for the poor kids who don't know what a real video game is like.

  • @gamesDAMNED Can I ask what a real video game is like?

  • @SirValor1177 Simple. A "real video game" is whatever cranky old Grampa Simpsons like me says it. It has to be something that came out waaaay back in "the good old days." We wax nostalgic about blisters and cramped hands, and how we always walked uphill to school every day...in five feet of snow...because life was hard back then, dagnabbit! Also, I wore an onion on my belt, which was the style of the time. Seriously, though, 80s arcade games had a different vibe than today's stuff.

  • You ROCK!!!

  • 0:30 does he give a 'yeah boys I STILL got i' hand motion?

  • prolly one of the best sounding games made back then all high tec stereophonic crazyness

  • Can you please tell me how I can purchase a control panel like that

    Cheers

  • This is the most intense Defender play I have seen since I saw the lead singer for REO Speedwagon playing Defender in a Pizzeria in the 70s.

  • 3 and a half million here hi-score uk on white

  • Nice shooting! I always thought Defender had the coolest sounds of any arcade game. Really brings me back to the good old days...

  • I learned how to type because of Defender. My old man saw me play the game without looking @ any of the controls & talked me into taking typing as a result of it.

  • thing of beauty, played this when I was 6 with my football team, we would all crowd around to watch whoever was playing, there was only 2 machines in that bar..the poor old Gorf machine was neglected cos everyone loved Defender. I still remember how squishy the fire button was, it felt awesome. This guy is a great player btw.

  • I was truly addicted to this game and galaxians as a teen. Even the sound effects of defender are still mind blowing. . I would play truant from school just to play this bad ass. I would often steal to get cash to play it . I even tried to steal a table top version omg what was I like . Anyway thanks for the post

  • i loved playing defender...back in the day

  • some didnt like defender or stargate, only because they couldnt play it, i mean you really had to have good, hand to eye coordination to master this game

  • After the original Taito Space Invaders, this game is the most addictive arcade shooter ever produced. I spend every penny on this game when I was 13/14. Marvellous.

  • Woah, this game is older than i am and i still think its one of the most epic thing ever. It must have been crazy to play this when it came out.

  • Nice shootin' Tex......

  • after 30 years i still love defender or stargate, i would past by all the other acrade games,

  • it's still the most awesome video game of all time..

  • Cool, BTW I have a 1983 Balley-Midway Spy Hunter machine in working condition!

  • We have a full sized cabinet in the basement just gathering dust now. but before we remodeled the basement my father would own at that game. I'd just stare at him in amazement seeing all the colours flash by. I kinda want to start it up again. if only we had more room in the house.

  • what a badass game this was. great times down the arcade.

  • LOL'd @ 5:43 - "GO MOTHERFUCKER"!! hahahahah

  • I wish this game had a pause button back in the day. Love those sound effects.

  • Man, that is a crash course for me, dude. You are a great Defender player. My high is only 50k, but I'm gonna go down to the basement and hit the XArcade console and play some Red Label Defender!! See if I can't at least make the 6 digit club. Thx bro!!

  • defo the best vid game ever!

  • Awesome post - ty - reminds me of my good years as a teen at the local arcade.

  • i loved this game, i clocked this game eight times in a row (thats 8 million+ in score) over 9 hours of continious play to be kicked out the of the shop. best 10p i ever spent. Awsome

  • This game was the best of all time still is in my view I remember the ol days of spending 20C and staying on it all day then nose at galaxy wars tried kicking us out cos thats all it made in 10 hours lol then he put a limiter on it hahaha clown

  • tis was an absolute classic game!!! i played the hell outta this when i was a kid! i'm 40 years old now and wish i hadone of the full sized cabinets!

  • I can't watch...it makes me involuntarilly search for quarters and feel like I am waiting my turn... oh, and BEST GAME EVER!

  • Wow I didn't realize this was a 1980 arcade game. It was released for the nes 8 years later with the exact same graphics.

  • \m/

  • My absolute favourite game ever.

Used to play it in the local arcade yet most people there didn't really like it,.

Would love to own a real fullsize cabinet, but they go for serious money :(

Might think about building a replica panel tho.

Always loved the sound effects and the intensity on Defender

  • Some brilliant playing ... you are VERY good at dealing with those damn baiters.

  • Defender has THE BEST SOUNDS of any game from it's generation.

  • @cryogeneric

The sounds in just about all the Williams games are badass...except for Bubbles, but I can forgive them for that

  • Great game, with capital G. I played and spent a lot of quarters, thanks for remaining it!!!

  • Dude...you can play!

  • Yes greatest game ever, That is why I did a remake. Check it out!

  • This game is very difficult for me.

I love the sound of this game.

  • the king of games!!!

  • Gotta love those Pods and Swarmers!

  • That is on the harder setting!

I'd love to have that set up - you can't beat the original control panel, although I remember my knuckles were a mess after playing that game for so long, and I would come out of the arcade shaking after a long session. The good old days!

Personally I always tried to keep more bombs in reserve, but each to his own.

    Thanks for posting the video.

  • where did you get the original panel from (stick and button panel)

  • how can I get one of those hook-ups like u have ?

  • Beat that level of difficulty 'Halo Reach'

  • Dunno if it's me, but when you explode the 1000 pointer on L2, and the red spaceships pop out, it seemed really slow compared to what i remember.

played it on Mame emulator and its faster there too ..

Clocking it, 1,000,000 was the way some kids were always on it, a man every point after 990,000 .. theyd be on it all day for 10 pence.

Ace game though, and what, thrust, rev,Smart.B, and hyperspace, fire, wow, what a game, they just don't make em like that now eh

  • Defender was the best!

  • best sound of any game

  • It gives me great joy to see this :)

  • Best Spacies game of all time, period. Nice playing man.

  • Nice job killing off those swarmers! By the way, many people thought they were called "Briters," instead of "Baiters!" Graphics of the 80s....

  • oops.. i meant 'smart enough' to time the pod intesection. You could if you were that good in the day on the original . The screen would freak out for about 5 seconds and the swarmers would still come out. On the 5 pod waves you got 2 pods worth...

There's another freeze glitch. This one to the players benefit- pick up all 10 humanoids on firs wave and slam em in the ground.... the 'freeze' effect.

  • @blackhawkfan54 yea, used to love doin' that with the humanoids and then be cheeky and take a few baiters on for more points...hehe...man, makes me wanna play again ..

  • Comment removed

  • its always nice to see terra's and my searches for williams defender around these parts...

One thing I will say about the 'original' there were a ton of glitches not to the players benefit.

If you were 'smart' enough to split all pods at a pod intersection with a smart bomb, swarmers still came out- that lead to destroying everything by the 'original gurus'- one at a time - seen here. A defect that was fixed later- in Stargate.

  • @fast4panther ... i typed stargate defender into the youtube search ... and i think its the third seach result from the top ." STARGATE DEFENDER CLONE/REMAKE ... THIS GUY HAS THE LINK ON HIS VIDEO to download the game ... then you'll just need a game pad and you're off and flying....i'll be playing this game from now on .... I JUST LOVE IT .

  • Awesome, can't believe I watched the whole thing! I once got about 50K back in the day - that was my highest score.

  • Easily one of the best video games ever made, They will never make games like this again, I wish they would. Today's kids have NINTENDO, games are slow paced, have cheats, save features, but pure addictive game play was back in the day of DEFENDER. Drop a quarter in coin slot, then play your best. ( todays kids use cheats, save features, replay easy levels for extra lives, then brag how they mastered a video game. TRUE MASTERY WILL NEVER BE KNOWN AGAIN.

  • i just got this game for my cell phone and its awesome as hell!! the screen on my phone looks just excacly like the original arcade version.awesome game but kinda hard to master.1 shot and your dead wich makes it difficult, but it has these greate graphics.it gots this hyper bomb or something that when you press the * key destroys everything in the screen and give u an awesome light show!!and there an upted version in the game to wich fn rules too!!good music too, this game is badass

  • Wow it brings back great memorys. As an 80s champion of the

Mighty Defender Arcade game. I literaly Spent entire days from morning till eve on 1 credit blasting this game. only swapping briefly with a friend for a toilet stop or a bite. Then ditching the game becoz of closing time. I love this game.Long live Defender.

  • Thats awesome man !!

  • ...takes me way back! I used to spend 10 pence (or 20 pence? UK Money) and be on there for hours! I actually clocked it at some stage during my arcade career! Would love to play it again!

  • great game !!! i use to play this after school !!! a friend had the portable game . . .

  • Invested all my paper route money into this game at the age of 13. No regrets

  • I just wanted to thank you for defending us from the Alien attacks! Well done!

  • I could around 300k back in the day.

  • this game was great in it's day.

  • MAN its been a LONG time since I played that game! Back in the day, my best friend and I mastered that game, we'd play for hours on a single quarter. Of course we spent alot getting that good. We literally got so good that we could play as long as we could stand at the machines! Sounds like bragging I know but no BS we were that good. Used to make the arcaded owners mad when they'd see us come in because they knew they were going to loose money that night on Defender. Those were the days!

  • @WATERDOG300

I know what you mean. I had two running partners and over the course of a year or so, after thousands of quarters we got so nobody we knew could touch us at Defender. It's funny to think about it now, but that kind of thing got you respect back then. Those were definitely good times.

  • you play like a KING!

  • This game was early video game genius and you play well!

  • i used to play this game and " clocked" it on many occasions, if i remember rightly after 999990every time you died you got another life and it was very difficult to die and leave the score at 999999! and for you coronation street fans my playing partner was dev (jim) and we used to play in the holloway road london

  • @lestershaw every time you score a point after 999,990 you earn a free ship and after you turn it over 1 million that would be the all the ships you had to carried you thru the rest of the game I know did it many times awesome game back in its day!

  • this game still looks and sounds awesome. So futuristic and way ahead of its time. Very intense. Fuckin great job man!

  • I was about ten when I was playing this cafe-bar. The place was a small town called crystal near the Russian border.

  • I was about ten when I was playing this cafe-bar. The place was a small town called Kitee near the Russian border.

  • I would love to post a vid response of some defender action, however I only currently own the gameboy port of it, and its no where near as good as the version your playing :D

  • Loved watching you play this game :D

    I miss it so much

  • not bad man!... but i would av too question your use of the smart bomb so frequently!..love to get hold of the original acarde game in its original shell....any idea who might av one?...

  • Damn i am 40 now lol.. I must of been 15 when i played this at the arcade and my atari 800. Download games at 300 baud rate. Those were the days, us robotics 14.4 moden owned lol. 350 bux for it.. Bbs, imf headquarters ruled.

  • This and Robotron are like the spiritual leaders of games history. Beating these games takes a different class of skill.

  • @vapourmile

    You said it.

There's a whole generation who will never know what it is to play a video game without the safety net of a "save game" feature!

    Molly-coddled and pampered!

They complain when they can't finish a game in 48 hours ("boohoo - even with cheats THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! WAHHH!! I WANT MY $60 BACK!!! BOO-HOO!!" .. etc)

  • i have this machine its so cool

  • I set the world record on this game back in the early 80's but not on this setting. I played for 60 plus hours on one quarter ended up with 76,300,000 something. I'm currently in second place.

  • @Justfor2day10 Wow! :) You're so awesome, I wish I could have experienced arcade culture back then.

  • Thanks! It was not easy I almost gave up several times. I will never forget those days as long as I live. I use to save my lunch money and go to the arcade until I master Defender. Then I would ride my bike to the other local arcades just to beat the high scores on Defender. I wrote Walter Day the man that keeps up with all the Records that I wanted to try to beat the record again but I can't do it now. I found....cont.

  • That was awesome! Reminded me of me back in my arcade loving hey day. My father owned a string of arcades and I had free plays on whatever games I chose. Defender was a favorite of mine. I was the best 11 year old Defender player around. AND I PLAYED A LOT OF DEFENDER! Your skillz are still sharp after all of these years!!! NICE WORK!

  • Cool man! Defender rocks! That's a great setup since PS2/3 emulation really doesn't work with such a baroque control panel. I can play pretty well but get pretty tired of the madness typically around 100k myself. I think my record high score one caffeinated afternoon still stands at 300k plus or something which is insane for me. I own the original game cabinet and will try to post someday.

  • awsome dude, how the hell did you get an original panel?

  • Unreal.

This was an awesome game to play as a stoned 8th grader back in the day.

  • All the chicks used to dig me and most of the guys were haters cos the game was so hard to play. i loved it back in the day. hated it when it went into hyperspace lol

  • Game play was amazing.

  • man i loved that game, was the best arcade games in its day. where did you get that?

  • Damn this game was so fucking hard.

  • i noticed you don't use the reverse button much, and you master the thrust controls very well. nice.

  • The coolest game!

    BUT, NOT the original machine!

  • My dad has one of these originals in his basement. He worked for Williams. I was never this good.

  • this machine realy has realy5butons?what all it do?

  • joystick control; for up/down. buttons; fire, reverse, smart bombs, thrust, and hyperspace

  • @ryu174 5 buttons and a joystick. joystick for up & down. thumb button next to it for reverse. button in middle of panel for hyperspace. 3 right hand buttons - thumb for smart button and fire and thrust with the forefinger and middle finger. ain't played it for 30 yrs but i think that's correct.

  • You should also use the "date line" trick.

There's a point in the landscape, if a mutant or swarmer is chasing you, when you cross a certain point in the terrain they reverse back and fly all the way around to planet to get back at you.

If you sit just the right side of this point you only need press reverse and up and down to avoid death.

Try it on an early level and you'll see what I mean.

  • i have heard about it, however with the game setting really high like in the video, they pop up all over you after about 50k, and you still have to clear stuff

  • @nickbaldeagle01 Hmmm, that's interesting. I'll have to try that next trip I take to the arcade.

  • Not bad. But I bet you can't put a Rowntree's fruit pastille in your mouth without chewing it...

  • great sound affects and music

  • I never got over 300,000.

  • I haven't played this game since I was 16. At my prime I would regularly play 8 or 9 hours on one quarter. When you hit 1,000,000 there is a glitch that gives you a free man and smart bomb with everything you hit. If I remember right it does this for the for 10,000 points after each 1,000,000.

  • That's not a glitch. That's an Easter egg.

    The programmers never thought anyone

would reach that level but people did including my self. That was a very hard game to master.

FYI it will repeat at 2 million and so on,

everything you hit for 10k points will give you a free man at each 990,000 level.

  • This was the only videogame I really loved to play. But you are sooo much better than I ever was!

    Well done!

  • this guy must of went through a million quarters in his day.

  • Nice dodging, gotta save those humanoids though man!

I grew up with this game, my Dad bought it before I was born and he still has it in the garage. He'd score 1mil+... such an intense game!

  • I find not using Smart Bomb to be a fun challenge Just using Hyperspace and skill It's hard but it's good practice

  • I remember playing this game a lot at SuperTrack. I was better at the other one that was like this one & funny though I can't remember the name.

  • Stargate maybe?

That was Defender 2. I play it a ton on my 2600 now.

  • This guy is good. I never used up my smart bombs effectively......just too many controls. Hyperspace was very risky. Between 1980 and 1986 I had over 15000 games on this at Flashback leisure centres, but I never got past 60000.

  • Comment removed

  • There were at least 3 of us back at Uni who could clock this machine. People tried to score exactly 999,975, which is hard as each time you crash scores 25. I remember carrying all 15 men and Baiters would always hyperspace because the machine could not handle it. Also, when carrying 15 men, you could fly off the top of the screen and come on again at the bottom, leaving a trail of men dangling in the air. Best game ever.

  • I remember playing this back in 1980 and being amazed at the sound effects. Never got to grips with it though. Too much going on. Proper stressed me out. It was quite expensive too and I didn't have much money. Used to get more play time out of Spaceys so I stuck with that. You're a good player though!

  • Oh and the first 2-3 waves u should do a rainbow, save all 10 humans and drops them in one go, does tempted baiters but u have to learn to deal with them to get good.

  • How did u get the panel, i have the playstation one version which in not a facimile of the code but the exact defender code. The joypad is ok and can be configured similar to the original panel but i want the panel. was thinking of dismantling a joypad and trying to hook up something from that.

  • Looks Like A Midway Strikeforce Panel ?

  • I download MAME just to get the sounds for my ipod.

  • i got 535K the other night on my standup. I was able to bust a million a few years ago (free smart/ship with each kill at 990K), but I can't seem to get to that level anymore. I was hooked on this game in 1983. The quest to roll it over again keeps the drive going. Best arcade game ever IMO!!

  • oh man so much memories for me, spend 25 cents coins and this was in Barbados in the early 80s. We would rush from school over to this local shop that had one in there and spend the whole lunch hour just playing Defender. I just turned 40 years old in June 2009.

  • you iz da shit. respect.

  • I used to watch a guy playing this over 20 years ago, he could wrap the score counter right round and it reset back to zero. He was the best I ever saw at it.

His strategy, first and foremost was to save the humanoids, nothing else matters.

He would catch the last humanoid whilst falling and *not* put it back on the ground.

He would even sacrifice a ship to save the humanoids.

  • Well done. This is back when video games had a pair and a sack.

  • I'm proud to say that my dad turned over the score counter on defender during his college days. Probably the coolest thing he's ever done.

  • I loved this game as a kid, it still kicks ass! I have it on Playstaion 2, but its not the same with the pad. where did you get the original control pannel??

  • ...memories of 7-eleven taking all my quarters when I was in high school...lol
