Um those aren't really sidearms but really farming utensils they brought along as desperate-measure melee weapons since none of them could really afford swords or dang-pa. Its really a testiment of how Koreans "make-do" with what they have but then of course this is a drama seeming as how close-quarter combat was very rare for Yi Soon Shin in reality.
