The screaming scared me. I'm due in 2 weeks and have never cried or screamed because of pain in my life. I've always had a high tolerance for pain but videos like this make me think I'm not going to be able to handle it. Were you screaming because of pain or was it a meditation thing?
@goofygadgit Is this your first? I remember watching birth videos while pregnant with my first and being VERY uncomfortable with the vocalizing. I still feel a little uncomfortable watching myself here. BUT, it wasn't screaming. It wasn't out of control or suffering. It was an intentional, intuitive vocal toning that made the contractions and pushing very tolerable.
I strongly recommend practicing deep, low-pitched moaning like that before labor, and remember to try it while in labor! It helps!
@goofygadgit I was very quiet throughout my births, so much that it was commented on. Vocalising helps some women some of the time, but it's a low moan that helps to push the baby out, not a scream of pain. You really will do just fine whatever noise you do or don't make :) When you reach that point where you think you won't be able to handle it if it gets any worse, it doesn't! That feeling is transition, and it means the end is in sight.
@goofygadgit I'm telling you, Ive had 4 kids naturally and it is painful but its very quick. when its over with, you forget about the pain and its all about the baby good luck and just remember moaning with contractions slowly really helps.
Oh AWESOME! My son was born March 14, 2011:D (Home/water birth!) I LOVE the whole setup, could you explain the chair? Is it something you had made? Is it make-shift? (student midwife;) Awesome birth:D (so our babies are both 9 months:D haha that is so neat!)
@Semperfiwmn :) It's a kids Ikea Poang chair set on a low ottoman base to raise it to my sitting height. Thin pillows over the arms for comfort under my legs. Draped in chux pads and towels for easy cleanup. I wouldn't trust it to hold my weight for a long time, being a kid's chair, but I was only on it for about 15 minutes at most. It worked really well!
thanks for making me WEEP! i was laughing and crying at the same time! what an inspiration.i love how you were OMing just as the last push came. i feel so happy after watching this video! oxytocin. gotta love it.
@abbeyjade5 I labored for about 4-5 hours in total, though the first few hours were mild and irregular and I wasn't sure it would progress to the birth that night. Yes, she's perfectly healthy. She's not so little anymore. :)
I just love this video. As a doula in training, it's easily my favourite birth video! I used vocal toning during my VBAC and it helped me so much, I don't know if yours was conscious or instinctive but either way you rocked it. Thank you for sharing!
(I used to love your blog post about it too, have shared it with a few people when I've talked about emotional stuff potentially stalling labour. I was a bit disappointed to go and see it's now protected, but you gotta do what you gotta do!)
@weegeekaukap :) the vocalization was both instinctive and intentional. With my first child's birth, I lost the low tone and slipped into high pitched screaming, which made it more painful. So for this birth, I had to remember to keep my sounds deep, but the need to make noise was instinctive and unavoidable. I would not have been able to birth without vocalizing.
I just love this video. As a doula in training, it's easily my favourite birth video! I used vocal toning during my VBAC and it helped me so much, I don't know if yours was conscious or instinctive but either way you rocked it. Thank you for sharing!

Aw you made me tear up! How precious! Especially when you announced it was a girl (I"m still waiting on my girl, hehe) This is now one of my fav UC videos. Reminds me of my own UC last year :) When did you birth the placenta? Congrats.
@emmie1796 Only of the 5 pushing contractions and a couple transition contractions, leaning over a ball. Other than that, I was just knitting and baking a cake. Would've made for boring video. :)
now that I have seen birth occur this way, I feel like I really lost a good part of the bonding process with my babies. I loved the hospital staff and the epidural and all but your way looks MUCH better for you both . Congratulations =)
@RedRuby0712 freebirthing isn't a "good" or "bad" thing. It's one option among many that mothers can choose. It's wise for all women to be well informed about birth physiology and possible complications and resolutions, regardless of birth location or attendant.
congratulations!!! your family is beautiful!!! I am currently trying to get pregnant with my first =) My husband and I are hoping we will have a baby soon
AMAZING JOB! I also vocalized through the pain! I had mine in water, but I LOVE this chair you made! What gave you this idea! You did it all yourself!! Good job mama!
I'm absolutely positive I would die doing what you just did. I have one child but I didn't do it like that. You're a braver woman than I am. I couldn't have enjoyed one spec of the experience if I had to do it that way....it would have totally ruined the experience for me. Glad everything turned out ok for you.
@romck1 you wouldn't have died. :) It was a wonderful experience, minimally painful, and didn't require any bravery because it's what *I* needed to do. Every woman has different needs in birth, and should know and consider all of her options. I'd do it again today if I could. :)
I almost die getting a tooth filled......yeah...it would have spoiled my whole birth experience. I'm glad women who decide to do it this way are so committed to it. Hope everyone is happy and healthy on your end. Thanks for replying.
I can't even tell you how awesome this was for me to watch. I have never seen anything like it and now have a new found inner strength and can't wait to give birth!
@28danae beautiful! When u said 'I just gave birth!' I laughed and cried. It was the same thing I said after the birth of my daughter. That was a beautiful video, I got so teary eyed. What did u name her?
@aliciagarvin If there had been an emergency, I would have gone to the hospital or called an ambulance. I was well prepared for non-emergent complications though.
@limegreencarrot11 the moaning was just what my body needed to do. The low sounds helped me to open and relax muscles, whereas high pitch sounds make me tense up and feel out of control (try it!). That steady deep moan somehow made the sensations manageable and productive, rather than painful or scary.
@28danae I moaned a bunch during my birth too. Thank you so much for sharing your video. Seeing a wonderful birth where the mama isn't silent is affirming and reassuring. So many birth videos are of silent mamas and by golly, we're not all quiet birthers! Seeing another loud peaceful birth is good for the birth community.
@pregnancymad I wouldn't call that screaming, more a low moaning, and yes it helped a LOT! A relaxed jaw, open mouth, and low, deep sounds made it all feel very manageable and not very painful.
@28danae i found the noises you made to be very peaceful sounding, almost like meditation! you're a true inspiration! congratulations, mama, you did a fabulous job!
This reminds me of both my daughters' births (hospital births) in that I "sang" my way through the contractions too! Well, my husband called it "moaning," but it really helped take the edge off the transition-stage labor and kept me focused. It sucks that I couldn't have my kids at home (it's not an option where I live), but since I didn't have drugs, an epidural, or an IV, it was a very empowering experience!
Thank you so much for showing this video. I am becoming a doula and loved the way you were able to give birth this way. When I was in labor I squatted with each pain. I wished I could of had a chair like you had. You did a great job,
Great great great!!!! So I need to know about your birth "seat"! It looked very comfortable and provided and great baby catching spot! Can you let me know if you bought something specific or just kinda constructed that on your own? Thanks a bunch!!!
@nickandstick Thank you! I'm sitting on a kid's Poang chair from IKEA, set on top of the base of an ottoman to elevate it a bit. My thighs were resting on thin pillows on the arms of the chair, and the seat made a perfect space to help me catch her, and to set her down to unwrap her cord. It was very comfortable and convenient! And the cover is washable. ;)
