  • AWESOME! Thx 4 sharing! This belongs on an ultimate "art-rock compilation" with the likes of ELP, Genesis, Yes, Mike Oldfield, Larry Fast, Jethro Tull, Rick Wakeman, et al.

  • Unfortunately Dee Murray's no longer with us. He was a great bass player and Davey Johnstone kicks it on guitar.

  • Elton had a great orchestra behind him, everybody in synch. First time I heard this was on an FM station a few years after Yellow Brick Road was released. I didn't think he had a song like this in him, blows all of his other hits away! This is his finest work. Too bad he fell apart after "Captain Fantastic" and has been singing show tunes for what seems like forever.

  • The transition at 4:45 to 5:35 from FFF to LLB is pure magic. It gives me goosebumps every time....

  • I was wrong you you 2 knuckleheads were correct it is a Fender Jazz Bass.

Ghost hangs his head in shame...lol

  • Is it me or why isn't there a million hits on this song ?? Fantastic !!!! Hell.. Lady Gaga did a duet with him ! Could she be his daughter ??? Ya I know...

  • This is easily one of the best songs ever created. This man is a musical genius.

  • Yessss...this is a masterpiece.

Dear god - will somebody please bring back good music?

Love this album....and, of course, Madman Across the Water.

  • Used to love his music, Until I discovered he was an 'uphill gardener'...

  • @Nicap2 Really? That ruined the music for you?

  • The start of the song sounds like, "Mad Monster Mansion", from Banjo-Kazooie.

  • My all-time favorite Elton John song! It's epic! I love how it's in two parts, the instrumental build-up of Funeral For A Friend and then the rockin' Love Lies Bleeding. I can play it on the piano too! :) Gotta love classic Elton!

  • @DeeRod1981 Aaaah, ditto! Well, 'sides the part about how you can play it on piano. I can't. XD

But, this is my favorite Elton song, too. It's so... powerful.

  • totally AWESOME song!!!

  • Elton's greatest song, without a doubt. It has depth, symphonic power, shared glory between keyboards & guitars & drums, and outrageous thematic power. This is not just "pop" music, it will endure and still be heard in 100 years. This is rock'n'roll that elevates to the spheres of Mozart and Beethoven, and that is a rare thing indeed. Thank you for posting this wonder!

  • @rendilkraesin I totally agree with you. Very classical in its sound and feel. His best, by far.

  • @rendilkraesin Yea I dunno about all that but yea a good song.

  • @rendilkraesin awsome

  • my all time fav Elton tune. heard it when i was high school in the 70's.

  • I bought my CD of this album in Edmonton, November '07. Tried to wear it out, but (thankfully) I still have it, nice as the day I got it. We were born in the right time, people...the best time ever for real music. We'll never see another time like it, so CRANK IT UP!!!

  • No performer around today can match his talent, both as a writer and performer.

  • The Boy can sing....yes still a Masterpiece...thank you Elton,you the man.

  • Dee Murray`s Rickenbacker bass is so prevalent in this song.

  • @GhostsInMyAttic Fender Jazz bass stack knob pre 1961 actually.

  • Comment removed

  • @GhostsInMyAttic This is well known as a Fender Jazz Bass lol the bass next to him on the grass in the picture is a Fender Jazz bass! how could you not know that? professional burger flipper more like!

  • Comment removed

  • @GhostsInMyAttic The album is out there for all to see ,sorry I made you look like such a twat in front of so many but you are probably used to it !!

  • @GhostsInMyAttic I've been to talkbass and they agree with this guy, Dee Murray plays a fender jazz bass guitar on the album .also i looked it is a jazz bass next to Dee Murray inside " Goodbye Yellowbrick road" nothing like a rickenbacker bass ! you are a fucking stooge!!

  • Comment removed

  • @GhostsInMyAttic Gee you belong to Youtube and other sites that take any body wow what an honor ! so tell us shit head what are the other sites you have shown that you can't tell one bass from another and humiliated yourself on ?

  • all you asses wouldn't know good stuff unless it was handed 2 u in the little baby cups u bitches still drink from, grow up NANCY'S!!!!!!!!!!!

  • An incredible piece of music. Just think, if it had been created in the 1400's, what must they have thought? Elton John is indeed a master and we all have known where we were when he have heard his songs. Just an incredible man and an outstanding performer.

  • Comment removed

  • Not a fan of Elton the person any more. But his music is still the best of all time. I was a member of his fan club at age 11 in 1972. This is his best.

  • fair go !!! what's so good about this ? Give me Kiky De and Elton any day

  • Elton John is the best vocal performer that ever graced the face of the planet.

  • @racingqueen12 Nah, that title would have to go to Elvis '56. He was just too cool back then.

  • You won't hear anything as great as this from justin bieber or the rest of the trash thats out there nowadays.

  • such an awesome song, my favorite from him

  • i like elton hes alright

  • Just after this track comes the original Candle in the Wind - has there ever been a finer opening 15 minutes of an album?

  • @brodftw Yeah, the first 15 minutes are stupendous, and beyond that, i would say there's never been a better first 5 tracks on an album either.

  • I know I will get a lot of hate mail, but in my opinion, this is his best song EVER.

  • This song probably could have been a radio hit if the execs had made Mr. Elton chop it up down to a few minutes. I'm glad that didn't happen. This song is like a Cadillac from the same period: long and beautiful and to shorten it would be sacrilidge.

  • Where does stuff like this come from? Magic!

  • @jules031056

    close, it comes from god

  • Classic EJ~ How can anyone dislike this song They must be tone deaf!

  • Comment removed

  • Can you imagine how suprised they must have been in 1973 when they bought this LP, sat on the sofa and for the first time listened to this intro at 0:42?

  • @musictomyears8 OOOOhhhh yessss...I remember the day I bought it...I was totally bowled over...and it was my first ever proper album purchase - I was 12...and it's still an absolute MASTERPIECE!!

  • I could listen to that LLB guitar riff forever.............

  • The best album he ever made!

  • Excellent!!

  • This is as good as it freaking gets...

  • @bgagnon1123

    I agree

  • Rock 'n' Roll. Simple, brilliant.

  • My favorite Elton song of them all.

  • I was 13 when this album was released. I wore out the grooves

  • This is a Brilliant composition~! Could make this into a Broadway Play EH? not me, Just saying, ya know? Excellent Thanks for sharing!

  • Love it

  • The first 5 minutes of this song is god tier... Why does the second half have to be so average?

  • an amazing song, damned shame it happened so early in his career,, he's had a hard time living up to it since

  • @DigJam53 I was thinking the same thing-See my comment..YES This is Brilliant and you are likely right-In Concert he is on Fire when he plays this song! the others are great but he just belts them out-This one, he smiles and laughs a lot! so you and I are Spot on Top~! : ) Keep Rocking ♥Elton (age 61)

  • One of his best ever. I always loved this song and you will never hear anything like it in musicality or lyrics. Almost unbelievable that this is just the opening song to one of the greatest double albums of rock history

  • Beautiful- Like classical music if it were rock.

  • @youarelovedSOmuch based solely on your comment, and the similarities that I've noticed, I would recommend Supertramp's "Fool's Overture"

  • 56 yrs ago a man had a little boy. When he found out his little boy was being abused and abandoned by his mother, He took a Hardship discharge from the USAF to rescue me. he was my father and he came home and made me safe.He was my hero and he passed away. Dad, You can rest now. I'm sorry my book did not get to you but that was my publishers fault.

So rest my friend and know you were loved. I told you I would never say Goodbye,so I will see you further on up the road. I miss you Dad

    you were # 1

  • what ever happened to this kind of talent???

  • @lynzee500 it went away with mass produced talent cookie cutter artists that don't write there own material or are "found" by a television audience with a vote....

  • @sebastianblick I'm afraid creative song-writing died with Kurt Cobain back in the 90s.

  • @lynzee500 Thats what I'm sayin !!

  • @lynzee500-it was kicked out the door when money and auto-tune took over. Sad, but true.

  • @lynzee500 what are you talking about????? we have geniuses like justin bieber now!!!!!!!!!!!

even though i'm joking.....i was still cringing writing those words.......oh god how the world of music sucks these days!

  • @lynzee500

it died away with the birth of the backdoor...i mean back street boys. I loves Reginalds music. Elton and Bernie will never be equaled.

  • @lynzee500

It died in the 80's it sucks i wasnt around then

  • @lynzee500

    they stay unknown

  • @lynzee500 Sadly these days people think 5 Finger Death Punch is Talent....they should be shot! lol

  • @tegrimm

    well said...

  • @lynzee500 the 80s happened.

  • @lynzee500 the trailer trash that concieved all of todays pop singers destroyed it with thier inability to comprehend life

  • Fucking AWESOME!!!

  • bravo!!

  • Love or hate the music Elton John, no one can possibly deny, that this is a truly incredible song! It's an absolute frickin' masterpiece!

  • I played the hell out of this album. Love the heavy organs.

  • This was probably the most kick ass song they ever recorded together.

  • when does funeral for a friend end and love lies bleeding begin?

  • @duddy74 I guess you could say at the end of the instrumental but it really does not.

  • Figure the year.figure what was a buzz at that seminal juncture, then you will understand why John& Taupin were in refit.73!

  • This is going on my funeral setlist! XD

  • Very first album I bought. Everything about that album was awesome.

  • Wow, I haven't heard this song in ages. Great tune I'll have to buy this now! :-)

  • i still have the original 1973pressing. the my brother was born. the year the twin towers opened. mom left them to me when she passed still love the sound of needle scratches. now i have it on mp3, and listen to all his stuff at lest once a week. bring back childhood memories

  • wooo that boy good. elton john is bad

  • Elton John at his epic best.

  • This is soooooo cool. I remember my mom playing this album in the car when I was little. <3

  • If you "dislike" this song then you are a fucking low life piece of shit!

  • Still one of the greatest geniuses of this or any other time in history. I reckon that he and Wolgang Amadeus Mozart would have had a blast together.

  • I just love early Elton John. Played this on Halloween for last 30 yrs......Loud...

  • @rusty300775

    me too! great Halloween song.

  • Epic track from a great album.

  • The Super Seventies !!!

  • I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE SEEN 1 OF THE BILLY JOEL,ELTON JOHN CONCERTS. I CAN TRULY SAY IT WAS A GREAT CONCERT, IN MY OPINION, WHILE I LIKE THEM BOTH,. ELTON JOHN IS BY FAR THE BETTER PIANO PLAYER.

  • @1071patrick I saw Elton and Billy, too, and thought that, while Elton was the (far) superior piano player, BIlly was by far the better entertainer - together, they were magnificent!

  • @1071patrick I wanted to see that, but then one of them got sick so it was cancelled. :P

  • bought the allbum in '73 and wore it out because of this cut- over and over and louder and louder-- This is the soundtrack of my teen years

  • Which scene in a movie would this perfectly compliment, my friends?

  • He Came Very Cose To Yhe Edge!!

  • Elton and Bernie at the top of their game..........no doubt

  • modern classical music. this is the stuff they will associate with the greats Bach and others Sir. EJ is a man of true musical genius

  • Great song and album- playing this for a highschool mate who just passed yesterday

  • Elton rules!!! This may be on my funeral list as well...aren't we so wonderfully morbid..I do hope I'll be able to see the crowd's?? reaction to my musical election...

  • Elton rules!!!

  • Elton at his very best!

  • Classic song, And Great Music to listen to! A song hard to forget!

  • He should update the title..."Funeral in a FEMA coffin"

  • some divine right to the blues

    /watch?v=NuTXSnez3WM&feature=related

  • I always imagined plaing this at (Spinal Tap) volume "11" in a darkened church on Halloween night, church lights off, winds blowing through, votive lights burning in front...spooky!!

  • Love or hate Elton John, no one can possibly deny, that this is a truly incredible song! I don't understand the opinions of the 12 people who clicked dislike and I doubt I ever will

  • For those who say the Beatles had the best music arrangements.... I beg to differ and invite you here...

  • @coalminergroupie Oh, no; The Beatles DID have the best arrangements of music ever. But they did blaze a trail for many others of us to follow, includin Elton. Im sure even HE would tell you that; he knew em all, for God`s sakes. However, of all the jillion songs the man has written/co-written, this is at the top of my list.........

  • When one listens to "Funeral" one must add Marcel Dupre Carrilon 59 version.

  • This is truly one of the best songs I have ever heard! Really makes me think of the first time I heard it so different and so great! i LOVE Elton John! Was told by my cousins he was gay - I said who gives a shit he is great! Long time ago THANK GOD!!!

  • Frostty it's an overture..easy!It's not a complete expression, but that's OK in these quickened times.Glad you love this irresistable work.Elton could never give us a Close To The Edge.

  • I am going through the entire Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, and it might just be one of the best ever recorded. Plain and simple, this song does not get enough cred-- wildly underrated.

  • This music is awesome. Man what happened to the good 'ol days? Pokemon? Dragon Ball? Elton John?Nowadays we have shit music from people who say the same lyrics every five seconds. What will happened to music in ten years? I'd bet it'll be as rebecca black.

  • Listen carefully to the intro. This is exactly what they used to play in the Baptist church I attended as the people slowly began to come into the sanctuary. Preparing our hearts and minds to become even more depressed. Ah, good times... And then, home for our regular Sunday lunch complete with yelling and screaming by my mom... losing her mind.. and us kids crying and hiding in the basement with headphones on listening to KISS... Good times. LOL

  • @Vaekkrinhart i'm amazed to think this actual church music. no idea

  • @pikiwiki I'm sorry, I wrote too literally. I meant what they would play often sounds a lot like this intro.. the SPIRIT of it.. kind of down and sad sounding, to me..

  • @Vaekkrinhart ah, thank you for that..

  • RIP Steve Jobs

  • RIP Steve Jobs

  • Thats David Henschel on ARP Synthesizer!

  • Back in the day some Radio stations would play this entire song, one of Johns best work. Its great to go back memory lane.

  • Shut up!

  • Back in the day, I had a righteous stereo, six foot tall ribbon speakers, mac gear, and I would put this song on and try to blow the walls down...I think it is one of those rare songs that the louder you play it, the better it sounds! The kettle drums vibrate right down in your soul, the piano zings you up to the sky, and the electric guitar weaves a magic thread all through it...oops, was that my mushroom voice... ha ha ha

  • @choochootrayn you are so right!!!! The louder the better, even when the windows would vibrate! It was like you could feel the music going thru your body!, and what a wonderful feeling, lol, I still play it loud~

  • @choochootrayn In the late 70's I owned a set of Realistic 16" speakers and tried the same thing, lol. Never busted a window, but damn, had fun trying! Good fun!

  • @choochootrayn Me too. I would put this album on and the walls would vibrate!!

  • @choochootrayn Dude. When this album came out, I was a senior in HS. My graduation present was a Kenwood Quadraphonic receiver, Marantz 200w amp, Altec Lansing speakers(4!), a Harmon Kardon turntable, and Bose headphones. I would blast this until the windows were rattling, and my parents pounded on my door! Colombian, Thai sticks, window pane, and hash oil were around then. My ear doctor asked me if I listened to loud rock music when I was young, because i have hearing loss. Guilty as charged!

  • @arklat dood, I was a junior when it was released. I had a Macintosh amp, a marantz receiver/tuner, a teac

reel to reel and a girard turntable with 2 KLH speakers and 2 fisher speakers (one in each corner of my bedroom). I would listen to this entire double album at MAXIMUM volume everyday. The only album that got

played more than this one that year was David Bowie's "The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars". Fucking EPIC.................

  • @stonelove919 Dude. sounds like we have much in common! I also loved Jethro Tull. Still do. I saw them in Mississippi a few years back. Excellent show!

  • @arklat Those were the days ! my friend

  • @garbo857 Yes, they were, and never to be repeated!

  • A torch no doubt. The man was in the shadows of Wakeman& Emerson. What would you do? build a cathedral? No Build a Close to the Edge, possible?I loved John because he explored the possibility of another Tarkus,Super's Ready, and above all CTTE!....Nigel kicks asss!

  • @TheTherese3 I was a HUGE ELP fan, and of YES. I saw Yes five times, and ELP during their BSS tour. Talk about EPIC! I think Keith Emerson is a friggin genius on the keyboards. I also love Tommy Bolin,.

  • May I recommend the book 'An Essential Guide To Music In The 1970s; by Johnny Zero. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • Elton kicks SO much ass. Thanks for contributing such sweet tunes.

  • this song is awsome

  • Thanks Elton!

  • 12 people don't like this? WTF? They must be fans of crap groups like "Panic at the Disco" or something.

  • @Frosttty hahahahahahahaha!

  • This was the first Elton track I heard and have been hooked ever since. Quite simply the best track of ALL time.

    Brilliant!!!

  • I was Born 30 years too late, thanks to mom n dad and my dads record collection i found in the attic, and his turntable i hooked up, and everytime i throw Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, it brings tears to my eyes,

  • maybe my favourite song and i'm only sixteen today, i can't stand these people who only knows black eyed peas or other kind of shit.

Elton John is a genius and many future generations will know him, not like most of today's artists who will be soon forget

*sorry for the language, i'm french*

  • @skoulof Good on you! Very many classics from rock and roll that are not ever listened to today.

  • oh daniel. . .you'd love this

  • yesssssssssssssssss I have diz double LP ..........

  • Bet you Kerry King loves this song.

  • Rock on

  • remember going to the night club and perfect timing this song would be playing and stepping down the stairs to at the4:05 min mark and just so glad to be alive and having fun at the age of 22 in '77!!!! Dixie Electric Co on Columbus West side

  • With all due respect to "Benny and the Jets", "Candle in the Wind", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and the title track, THIS is definitely the best song(s) from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
