Inch actually had relatively small hands. The gap between the spheres was so short that men with larger hands couldn't get their whole hand into the gap to get a "full grip". Inch was.able to wedge his smaller hand into the gap and it would press on the sides of the spheres.
It's just too weird, looking at Thomas is like looking at an overweight out of shape gym coach from the 30's, and yet....he has no bulging shoulders to press, he doesn't have forearms the size of most arm wrestlers' forearms, that indicate gruesome grip strength...and that's just to name two things...
That's true. I think, too, there are some underestimated aspects to his lifting. Thomas has huge hands. For "average" hands, the bar's circumference adds exponentially to the difficulty. For huge hands, it's akin to grabbing a normal bar. Secondly, Thomas has outstanding technique. He absolutely positions the lift perfectly.
There were a lot of old timers that are lost in this juice, steriod, supplement age as they would be an embarassment to the moder day clowns. Mnay of these juices do live past 60 years of age.
The press he did is called a bent press....a favorite of the old time strongmen. I believe it was Arthur Saxon that could bent press a barbell weighing over 300 LBS.
This dumbbell has a handle that is over 2 inches in diameter unlike many of the dumbbells used in other videos that are the standard diameter of just over 1 inch. This make a world of difference in the amount of weight one ca lift. Thomas Inch was able to dead lift around 670 pounds. In this video he is over 60 and well past his prime. I wonder what he could have done with the roids that most guys use today yet deny their use?
and whats with all the comments about how its impossible to lift 80% of ones BW this way. It isnt uncommon to see a strong individual one handed DL 2 x BW.
That's not true mate. Brian Shaw can lift 850lb axle without straps and pinch 3x35lb plates in one hand for example, and do a farmers walk with an inch dumbell in either hand. Strongmen of today are just as strong,
@CoC3 Yeah, after they practice and practice for years and years trying to copy the oldtime strongmen. They invent all kinds of devices to try and supplement their training. Plus they take all kinds of supplements, both natural and unnatural.
trust me......it's a much lighter replica......just see what it takes to lift that at what he claims is his weight is under 200 lbs.
Inch never proved he lifted the 172 lb dumbell. He claimed to have lifted it "hundreds of times" and never once on front of skeptics.......for example.....one time.....iNch was 210 lbs and claimed to have lifted the bell (82% his bodyweight)
If Mark Henry(390 lbs) tried to lift 82% his weight, that's 315 lbs. ImPOSSSIBLE> and btw, Mark Henry lifted it on camera

It wasn't just the weight, the dumbell had a thick 2 1/2 inch handle, aside from guys like Andre the Giant or Dalip Singh there weren't many who could wrap their fingers fully around that, so lifting it requires massive grip strength as well as overall muscle.

First of all, strength to bodyweight decreases with a higher bodyweight. Furthermore, Chuck Ahrens and Paul Anderson both pressed 280-300 lb dumbbells. Maxick and Arthur Saxon both lifted over 100% bodyweight in one hand. It's not impossible.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it's fake.........he is a fraud.........He NEVER lifted his rreal bell on front of ANYONE..........obviously raising 82% of your bodyweight is a physical impossibility......
Muhc heavier men with MUCH bigger muscles have a harder time than this.
Thomas inch was 65 years old when this was filmed and another interesting fact about thomas inch was that when he was 69 he could deadlift 560lbs with 1 arm.
Fake. At least this performance. Thomas Inch was an incredible strongman, but in this vid he almost curls the dumbell to his shoulder. The original inch weighs 172lbs., with a 2.5'' thick handle. Nobody is going to be curling that baby!
there were 2 Inch dumbells, the littal cast one you are talking about and this one that was 150lbs unloded and could be over 200lbs with more shot in it,and the way he is lifting it is a lot easyer than it looks,it'a a swing clean, and bent press.
Bob Hoffman of York Barbell fame did a legitimate 1-arm clean & bent press with 286 & he had solid witnesses; I don't know who this was or what kind of verification existed--if it's true--most impressive!
There were actually several versions Thomas Inch had that he took around the world with him. This is one of the versions. Though it is not the "original", this is one of them.

I never saw a video of Inch's lift but this guy is strong. Not even the guys today can manage the lift off the floor with one arm.
