clearly freeman used a pick to record the solo. the only important thing about using a pick or not is whatever gets you the right sound (and if you need speed obviously a pick is the way to go). i never really learned to play bass with a pick and i relied way too much on hammer-ons and pull-offs for the fast stuff. if i had to start over i wouldn't hesitate to use a pick whenever i needed one and spend more time writing great bass parts and learning to use effects.

its all a matter of preference in your tone its the same as when you are picking which pickup you are going to use the type of wood of your bass roundwoods vs flats etc.....

i mean there isnt a CORRECT path toward bass technique in that dept it up to the user - me i go fingerstyle usually but im not afraid to use a pick from time to time when i feel it gives me the right punch in my tone
