I think I came to page 275 or so after struggling page by page through a tiresome slow and boring story that didn't go anywhere. The theme didn't stick, didn't fascinate, didn't seem plausible or believable so for the first time in my life I gave up reading a fiction... Mr Gibson, I paid $10.75 including taxes at san fransisco airport ... I want my money back!
Have read every one of his books - now reading Zero History. He is pretty much just how I imagined him - just from how he writes. I am so grateful for his work - one of the authors of a whole sub-genre.
How can you say Virtual Light sucked? I think that was one of his best books. It was easier to read, it played out well and would make one hell of a movie. If any of the things he wrote sucked, all that comes to mind is Idoru which was kind of boring in my eyes. I am buying up everything he wrote. I'd like to see a new book of short stories by him. In the world of "cyberpunk" ... this guy is a king.
the only william gibson book i ever read was I Am Legend book and i just found somehting interesting out i knew him well his daughter anyway she used to come over to use our pool when we were little kids
ah well every now and than i went to my cousins place and there duaghter knew this guy's daughter so that's how i knew him wish i knew who he was at the time i would of talked to him more but after all i was just a kid
they say something so simple in a hard way , cmpletely unessesary, make sure every word they say is pure fucking gold, what are the odds somebodys gonna claim im imatutre or ignorant because i said fucking, twice?
I just finished tomorrows parties and I am still trying to figure out just what went on. But I found myself inside those characters minds every step of the way. Gibson is speaking of deteriorization of normal concepts of civilization and evolution in terms of technology. "it is a shame that technology will prevail and humanity will succumb to it"
Reading spook country now, I am as usual wading through an enourmous amount of jargon and complex charachters and only want more of a stephen King approach and less division, complexity and that ever prevalent writers mind where you have to reread and reread. Gibson can write and he is brilliant but sheez give the not so high iq people a break sometimes? OK. I have an iq of 149, so it
s high, but gibson must have an iq of 190 or more.
What has happened to William Gibson's voice? I've seen Gibson speak in person, twice: once when he gave a reading from _The Difference Engine_, and once when he gave a reading from _Virtual Light_. Maybe I'm remembering wrongly, but he seemed to speak much more clearly back then: in this video, by contrast, he sounds like he has a bit of a speech impediment. Am I imagining things? I sure hope so.
@Cliodule sorry for the late response, just found this thread..i think his speech has always had that kind of pattern, in the road trip video where he speaks at length in 'no maps for these territories', you hear back in 2000 the same mannerisms i would call them..
i fondly remember listening to his audiobook reading of neuromancer when i traveled one summer as a late teen. I much prefer hearing his words to reading them, like william burroughs, his speech rhythms brings something special to his text thats his only. love the guy.
I don't understand what was so out of the reach of people's understanding, here...what was so "academic" about what he was talking about? Also, does he not know how to type quickly?? That would be so interesting...he looked so un-ergonomic at his workspace!

lets see how many big words I can throw together with the stoner space talking method that means I am smarter than everyone else. Keep shoving tampons up ya bum chump
Gibson is my hero I have a personal letter from him when I was a kid but he doesn't always get things right. I admire him still but he has fallen into the trap of academia being as renowned as he is; he doesn't understand the world like he used to. Not his fault.

I love how the father of cyberpunk has to hunt and peck to type. He's the best though. Just made me laugh.

I don't think that "I Am Legend" was written by Gibson.
Anyway, you know his daughter? I'm a little confused now, maybe you'd like to tell me more.

God bless you William Gibson. I hope people look back 500 years from now and say, "How did he get it right?"
I can't believe there are only 8 replies to this! Great Gibson footage is so hard to find.
P.S. One of the few authors I hope to meet before he, or I, pass on. Unfortunately, I doubt he will ever pass as far south as Texas.

great take on "the singularity" from the video:
