@AntonyGothicPotato bahahaha You would be Russian! I actually remember my mom watching Santa-Barbara when I was really little. It was like the hottest show in Moscow in the early 90s
Speech recognition is just as shitty now as it was in 1986--for dictation. It's less time consuming to train a Mexican gardener to write middle English in calligraphy than train Dragon Naturally Speaking.
Captions says:"Through the weekend. Russia of those who do. It's also that they still have a remarkable research project and i do and this is an experimental computer system recognize this last day. I thought and my words appear primamerica computer. Evidence that cabin area hasn't birds. Even difference between words that sounded like and taking lives rods are made. These right to missus right right."
I guess google should give IBM a call, looks like they were doing amzing things in '86.
@dedpxl Its in the process of being perfected... many android phones have it and now the iphone 4s does too with siri. I have it on my android phone and it works unexpectedly well.
Computers of today can easily do this. But what's the point? Why should we have to talk to our computers (having to clearly enunciate the words, and disturbing those around us) when we can point and click with a mouse or type on a keyboard? The most useful thing I see for this technology is using it for word processors. Instead of typing long reports, we can read them to our computer. But MS Word doesn't have that yet, unfortunately.
IBM couldn't innovate their way out of a paper bag in the 80s. The PC was nothing more than a collection of bargain basement parts held together with primitive ideas and the only reason it won was a combination of brand snobbery, and being so crude anyone with a pulse could crank out knockoffs.
@doritostheking Agreed that was a gimmick, but IBM/Compatibles were probably the most powerful home system money could buy. They were just way too expensive. Most other systems of that time were low-powered breadboards in comparison.
@beefheart22 Utter nonsense. EGA graphics on an IBM compatible was considered high end. Meanwhile, in the amiga camp... And I'm not even going to mention the pathetic (lack of) audio capabilities.
Are you trying to compare an '84 IBM PC to what Amiga came up with '89-'90? I think that's what you are trying to do here. Btw-- VGA was rolled out in 1987... ...on an IBM. Yes, the first Amiga ('85) had more colors than EGA when it came out in '85, but it didn't blow our hair back the way VGA did 2 years later. But don't let the facts get in the way of your 'I hate IBM' story.
@z1975ss Nope, Pure amiga OCS vs EGA. 64 Colour halfbrite max overscan vs EGA's mode with the most colours, which is what? 16 in 320x200? Pathetic. We have more on screen than the EGA standard knows exists!
@girlstorm09 Actually, Windows can do this .... With software addition. Speech recognition program has been part of Window since Windows XP or maybe earlier.
@rilham2new but can XP write mrs. wright right now? I don't think so.
Iris (Android's Siri ripoff app) on my phone just said it couldn't help me, because it was never much of a writer. Success - it spewed out some sarcasm because I didn't say text, don't know a Mrs. Wright, and I'd be redundant saying "right now" unless I was telling the kids to clean their room.
Microsoft fixed that... Have you seen how you can steer your mouse with a mic in Windows 7? Say "Mousegrid" and toggle the onscreen keyboard on... you can now discretely search for porn... :X
I have one of those IBM ATs in my collection with the green screen, and even the optional monitor base. Mine has the 102 key enhanced keyboard though rather than the original 84 key.
Commodore brought the computer to the masses not the classes. And their machines typically offered more bang for the buck then typical PC's did. The C64 had a whopping huge amount of ram for its time when it came out. And it sold like hot cakes for over ten years. No computer has done that since and likely never will.
