they helped set the standard? not in my mind, the blues birthed rock & roll, granted the Beatles refined it and took it to new levels but you can acknowledge that with out having to like them, i normally get bored with in seconds of listening to a Beatles thats just my taste in music, i'd rather some old howling wolf, chuck berry or go for prog rock like king crimson, bands who all have there own style, the Beatles just have a different take on music, some people dont like it
