If I understand correctly the crack(that was the result of a problem with a new rocket transport system exerting to much pressure on that booster), caused the structural integrity of that booster to fail, the destruction of that booster was detected by the rockets flight termination system that activated the rockets self-destruct system. This is, IIRC the only total failure of a Delta II rocket.
