All three are going down, and the American economy will have to adjust to there losss. Here in the UK we went down the same road, and now so will America.
Similar but not identical. Most of the domestic vehicles are class-competitive concerning safety and fuel economy.
The real problem is reliabilty, both real and precieved. there is still a gap, although this has been significantly reduced. If the US auto industry was building cars like today 20 years ago, they wouldn't have a problem.
Preception is what killed the UK auto industry. by the 90's most of the Honda based products Rover group sold were halfway decent, but by then it was too late.
What is happening in Detroit is similar to the way the British Motorcycle industry went belly-up after the Japanese started making quality motorcycles back in the early '60's. American vehicles are inferior to those manufactured in Japan and fail to keep up with technological improvements that are built into foreign vehicles especially in the area of safety and fuel economy. Maybe this is what it will take to convince Ford, GM & Chrysler to become competative in the transportation business!
