@DOO1 Malcolm McDowell was amazing in that movie, but if they ever did a remake, JRM would be the only one who could pull a good Alex DeLarge nowadays.
this seems weird compared to the books- i thought steerpike was supposed to be uglier, i thought the whole point was for him to use his mind despite his appearance to manipulate the residents of the castle- still though this is ok..
I agree with others who think JRM is too handsome for a proper Steerpike. (Not that I _mind_, exactly. ;) His handsomeness makes him too sympathetic. He _is_ homicidal, after all. And in the books he never falls in love with Fuchsia; rather the opposite.
Actually, I think if Steerpike WERE beautiful, he'd use his looks to manipulate others and that's exactly what he's doing here. As for the sympathy, I don't feel much for him 'cause...well...there's not much to feel sorry for seeing as he's a psychopath.
Hmm, a good attempt, but I'm not totally convinced by the Steerpike character. The actor is too good-looking, and seems to be playing the role as a grotesque...
The author makes a clear connection between the physically hideous and the internally hideous. Here, one still feels compasionate for Steerpike. While he burns the library with people inside he has no intent to kill them, instead uses it to be seen as a hero and advance his position within the castle. His first hands-on murder also leaves him burned. Thus, when he completes his transformation into evil, he is also physically transformed into something...grotesque.
