actually, Boeing competitor, AIRBUS wanted to make their A380 have meeting rooms, swivel chair, and lot of stuff just like 747 when first launched, but since nowadays airline policy is "take passenger as much as we could" it can't be happening.
Nice collection. I don't really know... (I don't fly that often, and even if I did, I could never afford to be near these parts of the planes) Do they still make planes like this at all? With the extra room and the tables and stuff?
really cool. Those days will never come back. Even a380 biz class is not so good. Now airlines are only about profit..passenger.comfort and pleasure can go to hell
I don't get one thing, at 3:25 there is a "bar" but just behind it, there is a door, and to the the left there is seems to be the jump seats, did that door was noy "usable" I mean, what do they did with the bar once they landed or what would it happen in case of emergency?
First class and business class on airlines such as Qantas, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Qatar, Etihad and Emirates is still like this. Emirates even has marble lined bathrooms with showers in first class on the A380. Qantas have a bar and lounge area in business class on their A380 and Singpore Airlines offer private suits with 23 inch flat screen tv, double bed and private bar. Food and service on those airlines is pretty good too.
@LakeNippising What makes me sigh for the jet set 747 era are two things: 1) Airlines treated passengers like ladies and gentlemen. 2) Passengers acted like ladies and gentlemen. What most people miss is that back in the early 70s flying was luxury not a necessity so people made it an event. They dressed elegantly and the stewardesses were party hostesss with CPR training. I was just Pearson Airport in Toronto yesterday trust me the days of former beauty queen, Pucci outfited, "stu's" are gone!
I'm old enough to have experienced flying on a Pan Am 747 from London to NYC in 1970. Granted, we were in coach but it was still a great experience. Unfortunately, etiennedauphin is correct. With deregulation, it was possible for more people to fly. The downside is that most of them don't know how to behave on an airliner.
Crikey it's true, life was more fun in the '70s! It doesn't feel like much fun nowadays! There's no room for frivolity or folly anymore, everything is clamped down by safety and security paranoia. That's how terrorism has really hit its target, not with carnage but with the gradual erosion of freedom. If this trend continues, how will life be in another 30 years?
I love this video!!! Thanks for posting, I was lucky enough to fly on a 747 when I was in the military coming back from Desert shield in 1990- Tower air(now defunct) used those older model 747's for military charters. I got to go up top to check it out, but was seated in coach. My earliest flight I can remember was on a 707, and then a DC-10 Northwest Orient out of Chicago O'hare. I now work for a carrier out west, and the airline industry is not the same as these glory days, thanks for posting
Lest we not forget - Pan Am invented true First Class and Clipper/Business Class and started the first travel rewards program - Pan Am Frequent Traveller (Pan AM FT) and of course, the first airline lounge; the Clipper Club. Pan Am was and always will be the King, even though long gone. I am fortunate to have seen 3/5's of the world on Pan Am by 1985 and more until 1991 (a sad time). I was lucky enought to fly in First, Clipper many, many times and Coach as well.
SSSSSHIT MAN! You know, this made me tear up a little. When I was about 7 months old, I flew in a Northwest Boeing 747 To China ( I'mChinese) And I may not remember it, but it was probalbly better than now, ( that was around 1993) But I flew back there recently in a B777, and we're squished as hell, and First class looks like the Economy of the 1970s!
I was born in the 90's and i can only ever remember rows and rows of seats, no luxary swivel seats and lounge areas. I did find the flight very fun but i was only about 5 at the time, in April im on a school trip to FLorida by plane, Im dreading the flight because being on a plane scares the hell out of me!
The B747 is still the coolest plane without doubt. I have flown on the A380 in business class with Air France and Singapore Airlines. The A380 is a superb piece of engineering, of that there is no question. However, the B747's lines are just the most stylish of any aircraft in the sky. Just my opinion. (commercial pilot).
Good old times when flying was certainly an unforgetable experience. Inflight service used to be superb, food was amazing and comfort complete. Today flying sucks and most of the time people are crammed into seats, just like sardine in can.
I was lucky enough to be a part of this "golden age" of flying............it was such an amazing experience. And yes, people dressed up to travel back in those days. I rarely travel at all anymore just to avoid all the hassles and aggravation of flying now.
What a fantastic song to go with a great video. I'm always so dismayed at how these days the airline interiors are just blue blue blue blue in America. The 70's had a lot of orange, red, yellow, earth tones, brown, etc.
Ah I wish I was old enough to have experienced the golden era of jet travel! I was born in '77, which was a bad year for jet travel really. But things certainly looked better back then, more chilled out and fun! Loads of brown and orange too :)
Yeah and you actually PAID fair market value. People are still paying about the same prices to fly after 40 years and you want the same luxury? You're a fucking idiot OP!!
I think that it used to be that way because there were a lot more people afraid of flying then. Making it as comfortable for them as possible. Now, it's more of a necessity to get around and they need to fit in more passengers, make more money as possible since flying is in much more demand. I wish I could experience it then. D: Oh well, some airline's first class is just as nice. I've never experienced that, though.
I can remember this era. We flew home from Europe on a Pan Am 747 in July, 1970. I can remember being almost beside myself, I was so excited. We were in coach, just forward of the wings, but since it was Pan Am, even coach was pretty fancy. I won't fly anything but first class/business now since coach is like being in a bus. People just don't know how to behave on a plane anymore. Maybe it's time to re-regulate the airlines a bit.
I was born in the wrong era (ie 1981). I should have been able to witness this. Today, airplanes are loaded with rednecks in sweat pants, people are crammed into seats, food sucks unless you're in business or first and they strip search you three times before boarding :(
Have to agreee flying sucks today. Instead of a flight being something to look forward to, I now essentially despise it, and I am an airplane fanatic. Imagine what those who aren't think about it? Since I have about ten years on you, I remember this kind of inflight experience when I was young, and yes people would dress up. Just imagine: those born after 1990 have no idea flying could be anything but unpleasant and uncomfortable, and take for granted a security / carry-on items hassle!
I was born in 1996, and yet still i enjoy flying. but its just all the hassle of the security checks. But in england, they dont strip search you, but they are thinking of causing even more hassle by replacing the security gate with a box which you step in, and it shows the man in the desk next to it scans of you and all the stuff on you, including your wobbly bits. now, if to travel you need to present your genitalia to a man in a box, travelling isnt what it used to be :(
I agree with you. I really wish I could experience the real airline service. The farthest back I can remember was when UAL served meals designed by Sam Choy, a local hawaiian chef, and it wasn't so bad at that time. They had an ice cream cart- all of the airline fantasies of a child :P. But now, it's premade Trader Vic's, and everything is overcooked. Our HNL airport is aging, and the TSA is SUPER SLOW in Hawaii D:, but like ryonni123 i was born in 1996, and i do enjoy flying. Continued>>>
@Deltari09 Many Middle Eastern and Asian airlines still offer at least a hint of this old class service (though not really in Economy), Emirates, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific etc. Basically, all the SkyTrax top 10 airlines. There's probably a reason not a single American carrier is in the top 10, or the top 20 for that matter.
Continued>>> Also, my dad (circa 1958 rofl) mentioned how when he moved here, he flew Pan Am, and was seated in economy, but walked to the upper deck lounge and bar, with the shmexy f/a's :D. He also remembered that UAL had cart services w/ salad and dessert, but most significantly the ROAST BEAST!!!! >:D. I was drooling as he mentioned how the F/A would walk up and carve a piece right in front of your seat. Imagine if the airlines combined the old time service with all of our modern tech. :D
@LakeNipissing I grew up in this area and you truly did miss a great time, especially between 80-89 when airlines actually spent money on their passengers. Flying is just pathetic today and there is no more "want to fly" it's always, "do we have too?"
@ThatBearHasMoxie Actually, I am old enough that I did get to experience the end of the good era of air travel in the 1970s, 1980s and even the early 1990s. My original comment was those born after 1990 would never know any different than the way it is today... how sad. Or maybe only sad for us because we experienced what flying used to be like.
@LakeNipissing I remember going to Australia in 1984... I cant remember much accept for the mini playing cards they gave us with the mini tooth brush and tiny tooth paste... oh and the red blue green projector for in flight movies.... later I went to japan 8 times in the 90s, I ALWAYS asked to go up and see the pilot... they always let me... good luck now trying that... I remember the captain and his mates had the most relaxed attitude, the most beautiful cabin crew serving them doing nothing..
@LakeNipissing Yes I too remember this experience from 80 years ago. Only white heterosexual people were allowed to fly, and everyone was required to dress couture. And, you could smoke, drink all you wanted, and even play golf in some areas. Gourmet food. Today people wear sweatpants with holes in the crotch, and then they start farting as they walk toward the plane. I always get behind these farting crotch monsters. It is just like a bus today. I'd rather drive or take the bus.
You want that glamour back? Petition the airlines to take ticket prices up to where they were then...adjusted for inflation. That round-trip ticket will cost 2 or 3 times what it does now.
Since the time when these great ships of the sky carried those dreams of glamour and elegance, ticket prices have gone down while fuel has gone from .45 cents a gallon to over $4.00. With 60,000 gallons of fuel at that price and half the passenger revenue...there goes your dreams of refinement.
I was on a National Airlines 747 as an 8 year old in 1971 or 72. I remember eating with silverware and the large boeing was half full. The stewardesses (not called flight attendants back then) were all about service. Even in economy class they made you feel like flying was an event. And it was. My Mom had me in a dress shirt and tie. Nowadays when I fly I dread it for the reasons you stated above!!!!!
My dad was an AA 747 F/O during the 70/80's. Based at LAX. Many wonderful memories of hitching a ride to JFK or HNL for the weekend. ALWAYS First Class, usually 1A! Upstairs lounge and full of celebs from JFK. Ah memories...
The reality of this is that most of these things never materialized. The few that did lasted only a year or so, airlines did not wanted to waste space, packed the people in to make money !
I recall my first airline trip: July, 1979, MSP to PIK, stopping in Boston. On the trip back from Scotland, the 747 was nearly empty. Fantastic memories for an 11-year-old!
This is definitely one of the most excellent thought-of videos that I've ever seen on Youtube. As a matter of a fact, I was shocked that the now-cost-cutting, cookie-crumb scrimping airlines that were featured in this video had spacious cabins and/or lounges back in the '70s!
Some of these cabins look exceptionally gorgeous, and still look very modern too! I love the 747, has been one of my favorites for years, even after the A380 was made! :)
thats what northwest cabins look like today lol they have no personal tvs and they look old i would hate to fly in one from america to tokyo!!!!!!!! that would be boring as hell!
Gosh!! I consider myself to be a major airplane fanatic, but a Boeing 747 as a sex object? Dang, the thought of someone stripping down in front of 747 photos just seems weird...
Great video. Despite having flown alot over the years for business and pleasure I've only riden once on the 747. It was National Airlines 747 as an 8 year old. At time mark 1.07 of the video. National only had two 747's. So that could've been the one I was on. I loved that plane. JFK to Miami. Nowadays you get a regional jet!!!!!!
This is what the A380 was to bring back, although all I have seen is that they decided to cram more passengers in, instead of returning to the luxury of swivel seats. :P
nylon, fiberglass, carpet, cloth/leather seats, skydrol, fuel, toilet chemicals, coffee, food (when they actually used to serve everyone a hot meal), sweat, vomit, urine....
Pleasant? Hmmm... Unique? Yes. Although I've been in some ferry boats that have a similar smell like the cabin of an airplane, but lean somewhat more towards stale vomit.
I love the 70s! They always look so cosy when looking back like this, the colour schemes of browns and oranges etc. Wish I could have flown on a 747 back then. Great idea for a video and thanks for posting!
Great video, 5 stars, its funny but now we are going back to this way of flights with the new A380, maybe less space but its coming back, the diference is that before the economy was other, now is not so good, hope one day see the A380 and the B747-8 this way.
I'm going to fly to Ireland in Sept. I sure the hell bet the airplanes won't look that comfortable and roomy. It will be my first time flying to. Can't wait.
The interior of the old 747-100/200 was so spacious compared to even the 747-400 interior. Each of the lower deck sections was like walking through a ampitheater. The interiors of the new planes ,even the larger ones could never compare to the original 747.People actually talked to each other during the flight. Some of the best conversations I had were with strangers I had seated next to me.Now everybody is too busy with their computers, games and watching 100 channels of nonsense to even say hello
A fantastic compilation! I grew up in the 70s flying '000s of miles every year on many airlines (oil brat). The song, the planes and the clothes bring back many many great memories!
I jumped for joy at news of the crash air france flight 447. I love watching the plane sink to its watery grave. I enjoy hearing the passengers screaming for help. The sound of drowning passengers gasping for air is music to my ear. The bottom of atlantic ocean is a awesome place to sleep on. The moment the jet broke up in midair must have been a kodak moment. I'm disappointed that the death toll is so low. A bunch of bodies floating on the atlantic ocean would've been an awesome sight.
The music is so appropriate with the video ! Great vid !

(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) why do we like the cabin design of Boeing 747 more than our home?
(3) Why do we like the circular-spiral-stairway on an Boeing 747 so much?

ThatBearHasMoxie 1 year ago 5
@ThatBearHasMoxie Actually, I am old enough that I did get to experience the end of the good era of air travel in the 1970s, 1980s and even the early 1990s. My original comment was those born after 1990 would never know any different than the way it is today... how sad. Or maybe only sad for us because we experienced what flying used to be like.
LakeNipissing 1 year ago
@LakeNipissing :( my motto was that anything before 1999 was great.

I remember the captain and his mates had the most relaxed attitude, the most beautiful cabin crew serving them doing nothing..
choppersilver 1 year ago
@ThatBearHasMoxie yes, but thats only for the passengers, not for the pilots.

@ThatBearHasMoxie Hmmm, most of the stuff you reminisce about was actually already gone long before 1980.

With 60,000 gallons of fuel at that price and half the passenger revenue...there goes your dreams of refinement.
macgriffyn 2 years ago
true that.......infaltion is the biggest issue and one of the only things to decrease in prices in the world over time are airline tickets...

747-400 wasn't certified until 1989.

@CowboyDupree That is deregulation for you sir. I agree with you. Glamour and comfort of flying is gone. I say that and I'm cabin crew!

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology (sensation):
(1) what is the pleasant smell(s) that we sense when entering aeroplane cabin?
(2) How can we describe that pleasant smell in an aeroplane cabin? (eg. flowerly, ocean, wave, coffee, leather, carpetetc)
(3) What is the source of that smell?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

nylon, fiberglass, carpet, cloth/leather seats, skydrol, fuel, toilet chemicals, coffee, food (when they actually used to serve everyone a hot meal), sweat, vomit, urine....
Pleasant? Hmmm... Unique? Yes. Although I've been in some ferry boats that have a similar smell like the cabin of an airplane, but lean somewhat more towards stale vomit.

Hold it. Those middle seats at 0:34, they angle inwards. When the passengers stretch their legs, won't they be hitting each other's legs?

Why do we love flying? What do we enjoy air travel? Why do we like to see aeroplanes? Why do we want to design new airplanes?

I jumped for joy at news of the crash air france flight 447. I love watching the plane sink to its watery grave. I enjoy hearing the passengers screaming for help. The sound of drowning passengers gasping for air is music to my ear. The bottom of atlantic ocean is a awesome place to sleep on. The moment the jet broke up in midair must have been a kodak moment. I'm disappointed that the death toll is so low. A bunch of bodies floating on the atlantic ocean would've been an awesome sight.
