@falcondriver100 idiot. the south wanted to count them as fully human for representation, and not at all human for taxes. so the compromise was to count slaves as 3/5 for both. however, if a slave was freed, they counted as a full person, hence more freed slaves=more seats in congress. i know that the war wasnt just about slavery, but without slavery it would never have escalated to war and southern treason.

If you read the speach, stephens actually said that the majority of the fouding fathers felt the exact OPPOSITE to him. that slavery was at the very least morally questionable, and that it was destined to pass with time. Stephens said that the CSA would be the FIRST country, the FIRST to have white supremacy at its foundation.
