This is one of the most relevant reasons to oppose a theistic religious mindset. Back in the day, stuff we now fully understand was attributed to gods.
Gods are merely placeholders until we come up with a proper explanation. Even if we don't, that doesn't mean religious people should get away with sliding their imaginary friends in the gap and pretend they're right. It's also one of the main reasons why i think theistic religions and science are fundamentally incompatible.
A very beautiful exposition of a scientific mindset. And the religious say science is dry and can't move you. Exploring reality is the most moving thing we can ever experience!!
I think I figured out what feels "wrong" about these three short videos. My first thought was that it seemed really strange that they were so short and cut up into 3 parts like others have noted. The problem is that Aron starts talking about something, but you never revealed what the question was. BigThink makes similar videos, but they display the posed question/topic in text before the speaker responds. You may want to consider doing that with these, they seem a bit random/scattered.
Splitting the videos has a real disadvantage. Over 11,000 people saw the 1st one, but only 8,000 saw the 2nd and 3rd. I'm not an expert on YouTube demographics, but I wonder if you would've had more views with a single video showing the full interview.
Regardless, all three videos are still very well edited and pleasure to see. Thank you.
Are you going to post the whole conversation? Or is this all we're getting? Also, thanks soooooo so much for agreeing to speak at my university! You're awesome.
Seth, if you could get an hour with him...or better yet, longer, you'd have my full attention for the duration of it. I'd love to see more high-class productions featuring AronRa.
give us the whole CONVERSATION (last I checked "conversations" were TWO-WAY). We love your polished videos, but sometimes raw footage is where the meat is at. Give us the raw meat and let us digest it ourselves.
@Skepticktok I totally agree! I was in the third row at the Freethought Convention, and it was one of the most fun, exciting and hopeful (for our future) events that I have ever attended! Humor, intelligence, logic and truth all slammed into a comfortable, filled-to-capacity church! A really cool Unitarian Church! There's going to be a Skepticon4 at the University of Missouri, and a number of us from Tulsa will be going! I wanted to go last year, but couldn't interest my husband. I'll be there
@Bodywrecker Yes, we have a number of them in Tulsa, and while we cooperate with each other, each organization has slightly different objectives. The Freedom From Religion Foundation has fewer members, but more money than the Atheist Community of Tulsa. They are more politically motivated, pushing for separation of Church and State. My group, ACT, is deeply involved in Volunteerism, making the effort to promote a more positive view of Atheism. There probably is a secular chapter in SC! GoodLuck
@SkeksisRule So do I. His videos about creationism were amazing, they changed the way I think about evidence and belief. It would be awesome to meet him in person someday.
@KaraRvn He seems to do seminars all over. He did one in my area but I wasn't able to attend. He counters every creationist argument so well it's almost embarrassing for the creationists.
The thing we need to be cautious of now is that physicists are now providing explanations of phenomena that border on the supernatural. Don't allow science to become another religion!
Why make this 3 separate videos? In my subscription box, that meant 6 videos since AronRa uploaded them all too. Are they trailers for a longer interview?
@TheThinkingAtheist i get what you're saying but i think as though it would better to seperate them if te total time is longer than 15min. For a total of 6 mins 1 vid is alright
@TheThinkingAtheist I don't think they work as short pieces. It would be better to make it as one long one unless you don't have any more material to work with.
@TheThinkingAtheist People sure like to bitch about silly things, eh? lol I quite enjoyed these videos, and can understand why you broke them up the way you did.
@Comp1337e People have short attention spans. A short message will often have more impact than a long session. AronRa's speech from FreeOK is available online if you want something broader and deeper.
Keep them coming Seth, much respect to you and the other forward thinkers at TTA.
@aarowify I figure there's truth to that, about this youtube generation. Short attention span is right. I still wonder though, so hopefully The Thinking Atheist will answer.
@gordon5cc All science is bs, it's so obvious. The real answers comes from God all-mighty. You know.. that dude in the sky who has been sleeping for 2000 years.
@ObservableFiction Go ahead think that. Next time your sick, don't take medicine, because "science is bs". Next time you break a bone or need medical attention, don't go to a hospital. Science is not obviously BS, the only thing that is obvious is that you know next to nothing about your religion.
@ShinigamiKonata Well, i thought it was obvious that i wasn't serious. But if i would've been that deluted, Do you really think a comment like yours would have had an effect on me?
@ObservableFiction How is all science BS? Science has given us medicine, an abundance of food and water, and it's helped us live longer. What has Christianity given us? 1000 years where no technological advances were made and over 2/3 of Europe's population was wiped out due to the Crusades and the Bubonic Plague. And a shit load of people who want to make everyone believe what they believe and will trust everything that is told to them from a book written by "God".
@conroyale1 I'll just copy/paste my first answer....
"Well, i thought it was obvious that i wasn't serious. But if i would've been that deluted, Do you really think a comment like yours would have had an effect on me?"
@conroyale1 Absolutely true! What has religion given us? Short term answers. A theory, which has been disproved, so why do people still believe? If people want to believe in a God then they should be free to. However if they try to disprove history and nature and science? That is just nonsense.
@ksthebest yeah, some think i trolled, some think i was serious, yours is the only reply that actually got it. I don't even blame these people, cuz religious people do make some really breathtaking arguments sometimes. Although i thought i made it pretty clear, why would a religious person say god is and har slept for 2000 years? *HINT*
@Frizzurd I have to agree with gordon...what are you even talking about? Wait...wait...are you one of those internet trolls I've heard about? Not accusing, just asking.
