Just thought I'd add something: back in the 90's there were subscription-based services like TEN and Dwango that allowed you to play PC games online. They worked exactly like Xbox Live. But when Quakeworld and Diablo came out, they were free to play online. That set the standard of free online play. The result? Those businesses went bankrupt.
So why is Xbox Live successful? 360 games require Xbox Live for online play. If you could connect directly to other people, Xbox Live would not succeed.

How quickly 6 months change and now PS3 is hated! I have all 3 and I tell you this, whatever momentum Sony thought of getting second place from MS, might be ruined with this breach. All PS3 fan boys can mention is 2007 and the Halo 3 outage of Live, but when 360 users mention the PSN outage of 2011, PS3 fan boys stay shut. I have all 3, so if PS3 goes down, I still have Live to play on. I get my Live cards online cheaper and not a damn dime of it goes to MS.

MS gets everything first cause they bought the exclusive rights to it. Why do you think it took long for GTA IV DLC to come to PS3 cause MS paid them 70 million. Just like why did all the DLC for MW2/Black Ops came out first on the 360 because Activision got paid a large sum of money. Its not about paying for a better service. So if MS tells Activision for the next 5 years I want all the DLC rights and im going to give you 100 million do you think Activision is going to say no?

Some good points; I've got a 360 and an obscene amount of games for it but i'm definitely becoming more disillusioned with it from the level of immaturity on XBL to the overly expensive DLC - which should have (and would have in the past) been included in the full retail release. The BBC and Valve issues you mention highlight the case more....... in saying that people do come back for more so consumers (myself included) can't really complain if we continue to feed the beast!
What? Your DLC argument is wrong, Sony does the exact same thing with DLC, which is why Zipper is now charging everyone for all of their new DLC. They only have a certain amount of free DLC they can give away. You can get free DLC and mods for the PC whether or not they're free or not, ever heard of pirate bay?

XBL is overated. What does it offer? All online needs is friends list,messaging,invites,chat & the ability the participate in an online match. I agree 1000%. I WAS a 360 fanboy. After my shitbox broke for the 3rd time, I bought a PS3 Slim at launch, and have never looked back. PS3 has way better games, with more variety. PSN is great. We play the same games as they do on 360, but for FREE! PS3 exclusives are top notch! Killzone, God of War, Infamous, Gran Turismo, Resistance and much much more.

i playing on PSN for almost 2 years its good but has player bandwidth lags.
so server lags vs. bandwidth lags.
server lags can happen at any time.
bandwidth lags only happen when a player has bad internet or downloading on a computer and playing a game online at the same time

Some good points; I've got a 360 and an obscene amount of games for it but i'm definitely becoming more disillusioned with it from the level of immaturity on XBL to the overly expensive DLC - which should have (and would have in the past) been included in the full retail release. The BBC and Valve issues you mention highlight the case more....... in saying that people do come back for more so consumers (myself included) can't really complain if we continue to feed the beast!

What? Your DLC argument is wrong, Sony does the exact same thing with DLC, which is why Zipper is now charging everyone for all of their new DLC. They only have a certain amount of free DLC they can give away. You can get free DLC and mods for the PC whether or not they're free or not, ever heard of pirate bay?

XBL is overated. What does it offer? All online needs is friends list,messaging,invites,chat & the ability the participate in an online match. Anything else is useless & everything they're added [twitter,msn,movies,music,espn,facebook] has nothing to do with gaming. As far as i'm concerned XBL is the exact same as PSN with very little to set them apart. So yeah it's very,very,very overated.

You half to pay for dlc packs on ps3 online. unless you have ps2 plus which still cost money. xboxlive is better maybe you need a better connection, plus look at the download speeds on xbox for the updates compared to ps3. ps3 updates useless stuff , like there game cards who cares about changeing the color of your card , you cant delete all the messages at once like on xboxlive you half to go on it one by one , then when you send a message to someone , it adds more spam to your box ,

I agree 1000%. I WAS a 360 fanboy. After my shitbox broke for the 3rd time, I bought a PS3 Slim at launch, and have never looked back. PS3 has way better games, with more variety. PSN is great. We play the same games as they do on 360, but for FREE! PS3 exclusives are top notch! Killzone, God of War, Infamous, Gran Turismo, Resistance and much much more.

l4d 1 and 2 was ported to the 360 thats what these 360 fanboys don't understand nearly all of them keep calling it a 360 exclusive and they keep saying it was ported to the pc when it was for pc and ported to 360. Which is where EA comes in EA ported the pc version to the 360. whats funny now that l4d 2 is now on macs so its no longer a "microsoft exclusive" either.

i kind of disagree with lack of security, it depends on the person using it. Pirated files, games and such, are easy to recognise if they are infected. Forums help etc.

If you bought a Valve Game or rather any FPS on console that is available on PC you've already failed. I believe XBL is decent. Its not the greatest thing out there but as far as consoles go its the best. Its common knowledge that STEAM destroys any online gaming service. I always used to laugh at the Xbox guys bragging that they get L4D and the PS3 guys didn't. Why punish yourself by buying a Valve game on a console and not a PC lol?

But i have been raised on console gaming through my teens to my adult years, (i like consoles) however i am tempted to make my pc into a gaming pc. To take advantage of better graphics, mod's and many other features consoles dont execute as well. However pc gaming does have downsides!
