I just love how imperfect these characters are! Ichabod is selfish because he doesn't even care about Katrina, only her money. Katrina only uses Ichabod to get Broms attention, and didn't care about how Ichabod felt at all. And Brom becomes overwhelmed with jealousy and takes it out on Ichabod. This is extremely realistic and human. I just love it! Especially in a Disney movie. Too bad not many Disney movies are like this anymore huh?
When I was younger I wanted to clear Sleepy Hollow with the entire 101st Airborne. Now I think the Headless Horseman would wait until dark and pick us all off one by one.
holy COW the part where Ichabod was going through the woods before the headless horseman showed up used to scare the life outta me as a kid! Seriously, the anxiety of not knowing if something will show up but expecting it to is SO much worse!
@spiritgirl41192 Wanna see something scary? Just watch insidious. the part when we first see the red demon almost gave me nightmares. And never ever ever watch it alone, ever.
@spiritgirl41192 That reminds me of watching insidious. That movie almost made me stop breathing. And this isn't a little kid movie i'm talking about.
To those of you who believe Ichabod dead, what this adaptation doesn't tell you is that Brom was said to look "exceedingly knowing whenever the story of Ichabod was related, and always laughed heartily at the mention of the pumpkin."
In other words, the Horseman is none other than Brom in disguise, playing on Ichabod's superstition to chase away his rival for Katrina's affections. The ruse works, Ichabod gets the heck out of Dodge, and rumors of his death are highly exaggerated.
@DarthSmoke1 The frogs said, "Ichabod," the owl was saying, "Who," the crickets weren't saying anything, a toad was saying, "Headless Horseman," and a crow was saying, "Beware, beware."
@spiritgirl41192 Of course I've been wrong before. This is my favorite part, I love how it fades in from black and you hear the wind howling, and the himself sounds like he's scared. And the forest it self is creepy, like one of them is gonna reach out and snatch Ichabod.
@DarthSmoke1 Yeah, last year in December, I decided to watch this part again and I got really scared to the point where I jumped if someone came near me while I was watching this part. I agree with you on the fading in from black part, it was a good place for the last part of this to start.
Let's think about it. He has to be dead. The HH threw the pumpkin directly at the viewer's which was Ichabod's eye view. He's pronounce dead I believe.
@DAYD111 I really hope they do appear. I find both movies to be extremely underrated and both the Horned King and the Headless Horseman are great villains that would make terrific bosses
@LemitriDawkins Yeah well I guess, Ichabod is supposed to be the "main character" in this version (its named after him), even though Brom is the protagonist. So I guess they were trying to make him look a little better off.
Not alot of people know this, but disney animators use to recycle old animation and put it in later cartoons. Point in case, the crickets seen at 2:19 were used in silly symphonys The Old Mill. Same with the whistling bamboo sticks at 2:47. Just a little FYI

@OnlyBaileyRose i never thought of it like that. my take was that brom was trying to scare ichabod, not really knowing the headless horseman really existed.
@serpentisma Either way, it's a fascinating story and a real good one!! I always enjoy reading it aloud in the dark near Halloween, because I can picture it all in my head and feel the dread of the haunted forest scene. I remember when I first watched this scene, I couldn't get the image of the hand-shaped cloud out of my head for a long time!
@stolenusername4 the headless horseman's power ends if he crosses the bridge after you. he stopped at the bridge, before he threw the pumpkin. ichabod thought he was safe after crossing the bridge, not knowing he had to get out of throwing distance just in case HH had another trick up his sleeve.
@YingDarkness Tragic? Ichabod lives, gets married, has all he can eat. Brom and Katrina look happy enough. Unexpected, maybe. Tragic, no. Tragic would've been "Brom accidentally kills Ichabod while trying to frighten him, is hung for murder, Katrina kills herself out of guilt."
Wow that was actually really creepy. I hadn't really liked this movie at all until the last two parts. Both Toad and Ichabod bother me a lot, but I actually really enjoyed the end to this! I kinda like Brom :)
@thatusernamehasnotbe Of course it's not the whole thing abbydobie separated the whole video into different parts because you can only support up to 10 minutes for each submission on YouTube.
I never noticed this, pause it about 7:36. Do you notice something different about Katrina? She is much fatter than she was in the rest of the story. Did she just get fat or pregnant?

Well, this part of the movie scared the carp out of me XD So I bolted down my grandmas porch steps and sprinted across the long, ran up my porch and tore the door open! Ah....childhood memories
@CarlyxCrash I don't think he was being a sore loser. As they say "All is fair in love and war". Ichabod wasn't exactly being good sport about being around Katrina, he kinda rubbed it in his face. And Brom didn't have a lot of options, the Ichabod outbested him in everything, he had to suck it up and admit his rival got him at almost everything. Except bravery, which is probably why he told that story.
LOVE THIS MOVIE! I can't believe that Brom won it! THAT SUCKS! I think that Brom was the Headless Horseman and that he killed Ichabod in order to win Katrina!
@jvfunn3000 Hey don't get at Brom like thatoO. Ichabod wasn't perfect either, he was a gold-digger. Well in the book its hinted Brom did it. But it is most likely in this verison the Headless Horseman was real, we all saw Ichabod look inside. If it had been Brom, Ichabod wouldn't have been that scared of the prankster.
@jvfunn3000 That is what the author implied in the novel. But if you notice, that eventhough Brom was the town "rowdy", his jokes and parnks where never mean spirited. Plus if you watch the scenes with Katrina, you can clearly see that she always wanted Brom and was just playing up to Ichabod to make Brom jealous. And not for nothing Ichabod is a dick. He only wanted to marry Katrian for her being the only daughter of the towns richest farmer.

do you know what i love? how in the movies the rules of gravity are bent, like if you had water, when you pour with a swing kinda, the water comes out more, .... like thick and not as quick as if you acutually do that in life cux it would spill and stuff
oh gawd that would so be me... freaking out about every little thing because of a ghost story then laughing like a crazy person with a horse only to find that there is some creepy headless stalker dude trying to rape me xD fave disney movie
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but as Ichabod's riding in the woods the animals and other creatures are ominously saying "ICHABOD...ICHABOD...BEWARE!" Spooky! And either it's his imagination or they're trying to say there's an evil being hunting him.
Ichabod was probably thinkin, GODDAMN THIS brokedown ass horse!!!...i kno i was...he couldnt have been dead tho if the horseman couldnt cross the bridge to get him.
I must admit that I remember this movie with warm fuzzy feelings rather that remembering being scared. It's a real classic, there is no doubt about that, but I was a lot more scared of some of Disney's other work. Like Peter and the Wolf for instance...
I must admit that I remember this movie with warm fuzzy feelings rather that remembering being scared. It's a real classic, there is no doubt about that, but I was a lot more scared of some of Disney's other work. Like Peter and the Wolf for instance...
Boy that was some scary crud. I remember that when I was a kid. You know, I never saw what happened to Ichabod after the pumpkin hit. I found out today that he lived.
@apowers7 You mean the Headless Horseman?oO Well can't be helped. It teaches you a lesson though. Never go in the woods ALONE or with a very old horse.Lol
God this is such a great movie. This entire scene has just so much atmosphere to it. It reminds me of the woods behind my house. The woods get so quiet and still that if you are feeling the least bit jumpy the slightest sound would make u jump. A couple halloweens ago I was just walking through the woods and all you could hear was the wind blowing, nothing else, at one point i thought i heard a horse galloping through the leaves which made me walk back home lol. Classic Disney.
Holy snap! I'm pathetic. XD I was just as afraid of this as I was as a kid. I actually have goosebumps. I think it scares me more, because I don't know what happened to him. Poor Crane...
And then Katrina just goes off and marries, just like that?! How heartless...
I did like, however, that this wasn't like one of the usual Disney films. It shows that not everyone has a happy ending. And a villain finally wins! About time!
@bobdash101: No. They said that some said he was alive, but the old Dutch settlers who knew the legend knew better. I'd rather the horseman be an actual spectre, because that makes it far more scarier than it being Brom Bones Van Brunt in a costume. In fact, in one rendition, Brom tries to play his trick of dressing up like the ghostly rider, but the REAL one shows up and chases him away before going after poor Icabod Crane.
But Brom's horse's eyes were normal white with a pupil. The headless horseman's eyes are red. And there wasn't such a thing as red contact lenses back then.
And the horseman's horse also breathes brimstone smoke from it's nostrils, and it has that white streak on it's head unlike Brom's horse, and at 5:18-5:20,
no flesh and blood horse could make a jump like that.
Then there's more to this mystery. Maybe at one point Brom chased Ichabod to the bridge and felt he might've left. Then, the REAL Horseman came and was the one responsible for Ichabod's mysterious disappearance.
The Headless Horseman chase is one of the most climatic scenes from any Disney film. But I gotta admit, the reaction shots of Ichabod and his horse were priceless.
It's vastly overlooked, and it shouldn't be; it's way too thrilling. Wolfgang Reitherman directed this scene; the same guy who directed the Dragon sequence in Sleeping Beauty, the Tiger fight in Jungle Book, and the ever-epic Whale Chase from Pinocchio.
It's unique how it glows red around horseman....of interesting note, I believe Disney introduced the sword for the horseman. The laugh at 5:55 is wicked!
Has anyone else ever noticed that the sounds as Ichabod is riding thru the forest are the same sound track that is used in Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp for the same scene???
I had nightmares when I watched this the first time as a kid......but I wouldn't have it any other way!! It was and continues to be my favourite Halloween special. Anyone who would want it banned needs to be hit in the face with a jack-o-lantern....hard... ;-)
4:31 As our dear friend, Marlin from Finding Nemo, would say, "Good feeling's gone."

so sad. i feel bad for ichabod
dalkass 1 year ago
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but as Ichabod's riding in the woods the animals and other creatures are ominously saying "ICHABOD...ICHABOD...BEWARE!" Spooky! And either it's his imagination or they're trying to say there's an evil being hunting him.

In the novel it is implied that Brunt was the Horseman.

@red81suit: Yeah, but really, I figure the best way to end the story would be to make it ambigious, so people could make their own conclusions.

About time!
DrakkenWasHere 2 years ago 3
Yeah well they still implied at the end that he was still alive so technically its sort of a happy ending.
bobdash101 2 years ago
"Shoo kid, you're crampin' my style."
:P
DrakkenWasHere 2 years ago 5
@bobdash101: No. They said that some said he was alive, but the old Dutch settlers who knew the legend knew better. I'd rather the horseman be an actual spectre, because that makes it far more scarier than it being Brom Bones Van Brunt in a costume. In fact, in one rendition, Brom tries to play his trick of dressing up like the ghostly rider, but the REAL one shows up and chases him away before going after poor Icabod Crane.
TherealRNO 1 year ago 2
But Brom's horse's eyes were normal white with a pupil. The headless horseman's eyes are red. And there wasn't such a thing as red contact lenses back then.
Gideon235 2 years ago 2
Yep. I don't think Brom could make it glow red around himself and in the sky!
rsynth75 2 years ago 2
And besides no normal horse who could jump so high at 5:19, looks more like it's flying
eddievaliant1 1 year ago
And the horseman's horse also breathes brimstone smoke from it's nostrils, and it has that white streak on it's head unlike Brom's horse, and at 5:18-5:20,
no flesh and blood horse could make a jump like that.

oh just so you guys know all of the sounds in this film are either played by a orchestra/band or vocals so this movie is very unique.

How can he even laugh! HE HAS NO HEAD!!!!
tessabellem 2 years ago 5
Maybe it was really Brom in disguise. He portrayed the Horseman to scare Ichabod out of Sleepy Hollow.
wrestlemaniac829 2 years ago 3
I thought the same thing at first. But when Ichabod looked down into the Horseman, nothing was there (see his expression at 6:29).
TonyWDA 2 years ago 9
I see you're point Tony. I thought that to.
AnimationManiac 2 years ago 2
Then there's more to this mystery. Maybe at one point Brom chased Ichabod to the bridge and felt he might've left. Then, the REAL Horseman came and was the one responsible for Ichabod's mysterious disappearance.
wrestlemaniac829 2 years ago 3
While I like to keep it a mystery, keep in mind that Brom has black hair, so if it was him, Ichabod could have been looking at blackness.
SamCohenoftheJews2 2 years ago
dude! this story is classic! but i like the tim burton version better...its gory and has johny depp init ;)
BlueStreekCan 2 years ago
The Headless Horseman chase is one of the most climatic scenes from any Disney film. But I gotta admit, the reaction shots of Ichabod and his horse were priceless.
AnimationManiac 2 years ago 6
It's vastly overlooked, and it shouldn't be; it's way too thrilling. Wolfgang Reitherman directed this scene; the same guy who directed the Dragon sequence in Sleeping Beauty, the Tiger fight in Jungle Book, and the ever-epic Whale Chase from Pinocchio.
TonyWDA 2 years ago 3
Wow I never knew he directed all those classic scenes. I bet that's look good on a resume!
Y'know until know I've never seen any fo these old package-Disney films like this one and fun-and-fancy free. I'm impressed!
StrongGlad999 2 years ago
It's unique how it glows red around horseman....of interesting note, I believe Disney introduced the sword for the horseman. The laugh at 5:55 is wicked!

Banned? They used to show it all the time in 80's....I want the pre-P.C. America back!!!!
rsynth75 2 years ago 3
Has anyone else ever noticed that the sounds as Ichabod is riding thru the forest are the same sound track that is used in Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp for the same scene???
I had nightmares when I watched this the first time as a kid......but I wouldn't have it any other way!! It was and continues to be my favourite Halloween special. Anyone who would want it banned needs to be hit in the face with a jack-o-lantern....hard... ;-)
