This is for the first Armed Assault and I never managed to finish it. Get "LDL's AC-130" for Armed Assault 2, as it's by far the best AC-130 addon for any game that I've come across.
@mikefictiti0us That mod is, unfortunately, somewhat glitchy, it requires extra cpu power and so can become laggy and frustrating. Also, with OA it uses the new TI which is far to underexposed revealing only heatsources with no visible landscapes or anything else :/ I actually found that this TI-Thermal Imaging from the original arma and Arma2 actually look more realistic. Disabled tracers (AC-130's don't use tracer rounds in combat anyway), added explosionTime settings so that the rounds appear to take longer to reach the ground and I made the 25mm fire faster and with more dispersion. Also set the ammo counts to realistic amounts.
I've been told that they don't use tracers for the 25mm because the rounds would give away the presence and position of the AC-130. Also, the fire control computer automatically adjusts each cannon's azimuth to compensate for the angle and distance to the target area. You don't need tracers to visually gauge how close you are to hitting a target when you have a system that does all the work for you.

If you're talking about LDL's AC130, you can do this : extract the pbo, use unRap to convert the AC130's config.bin to editable .cpp, open it and add "explosionTime=" to each of the weapons (in the CfgAmmo section). Try 8 for the 105mm, 6.5 for the 40mm and 5.5 for the 25mm. You'll need to disable the AC-130's tracers if you do this (they will look weird with the delayed explosion setting) by editing init.sqf in the mission dir ("Show particles", set it to false)

I haven't released it because it's merely a helicopter with AC-130 weapons and a couple of tiny scripts. I have nowhere near the scripting skill required to pull off anything more realistic.
Hey... Since that you want it realistic... If you continue that script, try to make the plane shake when you fire the weapons. Put a real fire-rate on the GAU... And, please, continue the script... That is insane. Please !!! :)
The script in this video is basically a conversion of SLX's dismemberment system from Operation Flashpoint, using my own limb models and a slightly different script though.
Besides that, the SLX addon for ARMA 2 has a module (SLX Wounds) that features dismemberment. They basically explode into individual limb pieces, but it's still passable. That's what I use now.

Thanks for the heads up, I just tried it in vanilla ARMA 2 and I'm blow away at how well made it is! I'm glad that someone was able to resolve the issue's that I was having.
And no, I don't have OA yet so I wouldn't be able to provide you with a gibbing script that would function with OA's FLIR. From what I understand, OA uses a FLR system similar to that of VBS2, which means you have to manually edit the gibs and add the textures required for FLIR. Can't do that till I get AO.
I believe steam are selling OA for £25, i dont how much that is in AU$, and Amazon UK, are selling hard copy for £15... not bad prices for such an awesome game.
Oh, and about the gibs, thanks for the reply buddy, its obviously up to you if you want to try that! :)
There's ticket posted at dev-heaven for ACE team, they've been asked if they would include your addon in ACE 2, they would need your agreement on that, so, would you agree? I'm sure they could figure out scripting part, their main problem so far was plane itself but I can see you have worked that out so...
I posted on that ticket. Being that the base aircraft is still a helicopter, I don't think they'd want it. I do plan to eventually try and learn the more complicated scripting functions to try and get a more realistic platform for the weapons but I'm simply too busy at the moment to really sit down for hours on end and work it out. I seriously hope this will someday come out and be MP compatable, now that ACE2 has IR strobes, capabilities are even better. Please tell if you have made any closer to maybe a public release :)
There needs to be better sound when firing the shots and also, it takes too damn long for the bullet to impact the ground. besides that, very good job. looks just like AC130 Missions they would have in the USAF and also in COD4.
The shots would sound muffled to a real FCO inside of an AC-130 -- they are inside of the aircraft and are also wearing headphones. Also, in real life the rounds take anywhere between 6 to 10 seconds to reach the ground, depending on the altitude and other factors. COD4 implemented lower splash times in order to make it easier to hit moving targets. Watch some mission reel and you will see that it's actually very difficult to hit fast moving targets, especially with the Bofors.
The reason the rounds in COD4 and MW2 in the AC130s take 1 and a half second to hit the ground is because they're at such a low altitude with no zoom capability.
Wow you could probobly record this, remove the audio or atleast the guys "good and ready" voice. Render it in crappy quality and pass it off as "AC 130 footage from Iraq" HOLY CRAP THIS IS COOL cant wait for it to be on ARMA 2

Much appreciated, though the only real issue that's preventing me from working on it again (almost a year since I've touched it) is that I can't, for the life of me, work out how to script an aircraft, or a static object for that matter, to orbit a target area. As in, you open the map, click the area you want and the object\aircraft moves to and circles the area. If someone could work that out, I'd get it over to ARMA 2 ASAP. ARMA2 already has the C-130, which I could use as a temporary model.
I think there already is a script for that because there are Predator drones in Arma 2 and there's even Editor tutorial on Youtube on how to make drones fly in circle pattern over some area. I'm telling you this because I would really love to see this in Arma 2, it's simply much better then the others I've seen so far... This one looks amazing...

I tried, a few months ago, to get the bugger to circle an area, but it didn't work properly. Kept jerking about and it would sometimes suddenly change direction.

Yeah, it takes some time... But you guys don't know that because you play COD and similar a bit too much... If you just took some time to check real AC-130 footage you would see how long it can take for round to reach ground from HIGH altitude...

ARMA2 has new scripting functionality that will allow me to put a proper gunners position on any fixed wing aircraft, so it should be a piece of cake to come up with a realistic AC-130 addon. also, in hope to try and enthuse you into further developing this mod, Arma 2 has a built in FLIR system, better than this by far, have a look at some Arma 2 UAV test flight footage, the FLIR is incredible
Yeah, I've seen that video -- very impressive. Looks like it's only black hot mode though, no white hot, which is unfortunate, and I still don't know if ground units and vehicles have simulated thermals, as they do in VBS2.
i've tested it and noticed it myself, in fact i posted about it on armaholic, i was a bit dissapointed with that, all BIS have done is the same as the modders have come up with in Arma 1, btw you can switch from black hot to white hot using the N key, but ground units don't correspond to either, which like i said, is a disapointment :(
Ahh, a dirty way to get around that is to add hidden selections to the surface of the models and use a setObjectTexture script to change the texture of the units to either white or black when FLIR is enabled. It works in ARMA1. Unfortunately, you'd have to individually edit each model. Maybe there's an easier way of doing it though.
I've never heared of that method, but you can copy and paste units, and i'm sure it copies and paste's anything entered into the init feild, btw if you could PM me that setObjectTexture script it would be great, maybe for making your own FLIR effect you could not only bind a key to turn FLIR on but use the same key to apply that script to any availible units in the map, i have no idea how hard or easy that would be, but it sounds practical to me...
actually sorry to double post but i think you should make a video on how to script the units to change their texture to make the FLIR seem more realistic, it's suprising how many people don't care for this feature in the game, i think it adds so much to the realism...
Yeah, yesterday I had the urge to add some new stuff to it but I'm not going to work on it any more until ARMA2 comes out. I lost the other gib script so I'm just using a simple one at the moment. Also, it's a gunner-only addon so you can't actually fly it (movement will be scripted as well) and you can't view it in third-person because it doesn't have a proper model. It's just a box :)

There needs to be better sound when firing the shots and also, it takes too damn long for the bullet to impact the ground. besides that, very good job. looks just like AC130 Missions they would have in the USAF and also in COD4.

The shots would sound muffled to a real FCO inside of an AC-130 -- they are inside of the aircraft and are also wearing headphones. Also, in real life the rounds take anywhere between 6 to 10 seconds to reach the ground, depending on the altitude and other factors. COD4 implemented lower splash times in order to make it easier to hit moving targets. Watch some mission reel and you will see that it's actually very difficult to hit fast moving targets, especially with the Bofors.

The reason the rounds in COD4 and MW2 in the AC130s take 1 and a half second to hit the ground is because they're at such a low altitude with no zoom capability.

Wow you could probobly record this, remove the audio or atleast the guys "good and ready" voice. Render it in crappy quality and pass it off as "AC 130 footage from Iraq" HOLY CRAP THIS IS COOL cant wait for it to be on ARMA 2

Much appreciated, though the only real issue that's preventing me from working on it again (almost a year since I've touched it) is that I can't, for the life of me, work out how to script an aircraft, or a static object for that matter, to orbit a target area. As in, you open the map, click the area you want and the object\aircraft moves to and circles the area. If someone could work that out, I'd get it over to ARMA 2 ASAP. ARMA2 already has the C-130, which I could use as a temporary model.

I think there already is a script for that because there are Predator drones in Arma 2 and there's even Editor tutorial on Youtube on how to make drones fly in circle pattern over some area. I'm telling you this because I would really love to see this in Arma 2, it's simply much better then the others I've seen so far... This one looks amazing...

I tried, a few months ago, to get the bugger to circle an area, but it didn't work properly. Kept jerking about and it would sometimes suddenly change direction.

Hehe, I haven't even played the first mission of ARMA 2 yet so I'm not sure. I've only used it for the mission editor and modding capabilities thus far, trying to work out how to get an AC-130 into it :)

Yeah, it takes some time... But you guys don't know that because you play COD and similar a bit too much... If you just took some time to check real AC-130 footage you would see how long it can take for round to reach ground from HIGH altitude...

wow awesome, i'v been waiting for a long time for an AC-130 spooky Gunship for Arma like in CoD 4, even the FLIR is awesome. for this, i'm gonna have to get arma 2 cos i'm still kickin arse in arma 1, i have so many mods & addons that r much fun. 5/5 great vid

Now that u mention it my brother bought it & its full of bugs, nothing special, all they added some animals, a few planes & some militia. when i chacked it out i expected to have much more weapons, tanks, units ect,ect but i was really disappointed, thats why i'm still playing Arma, especially with the mods & addons i have on it its totally awesome but arma 2 is deffinatly not what i expected.

Holy shit! It's a mission made by himself. You can make your mission in Editor... ArmA isn't only for playing mission, you can make your missions too.

Nope, I'm not going to release the ARMA1 version. It's kind of crappy in my opinion. Sorry :(
But I've grabbed a copy of ARMA2 from eBay and I'm waiting for it to arrive. ARMA2 has new scripting functionality that will allow me to put a proper gunners position on any fixed wing aircraft, so it should be a piece of cake to come up with a realistic AC-130 addon. I'm surprised that one hasn't already been created...

also, in hope to try and enthuse you into further developing this mod, Arma 2 has a built in FLIR system, better than this by far, have a look at some Arma 2 UAV test flight footage, the FLIR is incredible

Yeah, I've seen that video -- very impressive. Looks like it's only black hot mode though, no white hot, which is unfortunate, and I still don't know if ground units and vehicles have simulated thermals, as they do in VBS2.

i've tested it and noticed it myself, in fact i posted about it on armaholic, i was a bit dissapointed with that, all BIS have done is the same as the modders have come up with in Arma 1, btw you can switch from black hot to white hot using the N key, but ground units don't correspond to either, which like i said, is a disapointment :(

Ahh, a dirty way to get around that is to add hidden selections to the surface of the models and use a setObjectTexture script to change the texture of the units to either white or black when FLIR is enabled. It works in ARMA1. Unfortunately, you'd have to individually edit each model. Maybe there's an easier way of doing it though.

I've never heared of that method, but you can copy and paste units, and i'm sure it copies and paste's anything entered into the init feild, btw if you could PM me that setObjectTexture script it would be great, maybe for making your own FLIR effect you could not only bind a key to turn FLIR on but use the same key to apply that script to any availible units in the map, i have no idea how hard or easy that would be, but it sounds practical to me...

actually sorry to double post but i think you should make a video on how to script the units to change their texture to make the FLIR seem more realistic, it's suprising how many people don't care for this feature in the game, i think it adds so much to the realism...

Yeah, yesterday I had the urge to add some new stuff to it but I'm not going to work on it any more until ARMA2 comes out. I lost the other gib script so I'm just using a simple one at the moment. Also, it's a gunner-only addon so you can't actually fly it (movement will be scripted as well) and you can't view it in third-person because it doesn't have a proper model. It's just a box :)
