  • We had these sirens in our 1986 Braun ambulances. The speakers were on the roof, and it would vibrate when it was on. Hated them.

  • Lmao, its so slow..

  • could you do a longer demo of just the manual?

  • I just got this siren,my friend has the amp.cant wait till it works!grat vid!

  • i remember that siren from the episode of cops as well ......................theres another youtube video where an ambulance has one....look up " EMS supervisor responding"...it'll the ambulance on Shreveport..

  • "Get on it Mel , get on him ! " I can't forget that CPD chase scene from "Cops" One of the best ever .

  • one of the best

  • this siren sounds great compared to what whelen is putting out now

  • Anyone looking for one of these, contact me. I have a few of these gems.

  • How long did Memphis use these sirens? What was the last car equipped with this siren?

  • Memphis still uses these on some under cover cars...i was watching a recent episode of first 48 and one of the undercover cars had this siren....

  • Nope.....memphis used WS224.

  • I think Snohomish County Sheriff (Everett, Washington) had this in their veh's in the late 1980's/early 1990's except they had a "grindy" sound sorta like they were being pumped through an electric guitar amp with distortion. They really got drivers' attention well.

  • i was watching first 48 a few days ago and heard one of these in memphis. so memphis still uses them here and there.

  • they have whelen sirens but not this model

  • I am a Cleveland Police Officer and I have to say by far, this was the best siren we ever had! I miss it. If I could get this siren for my car now, I'd be happy. Very loud and people actually moved out of the way when I put that yelp on! Thanks for the memories.

  • how many years have you been on the job in Cleveland

  • It's going on my 13th year on the job.

  • they still had those sirens when you joined the dept

  • Oh yeah! Loved it! They even transferred them to our new (back then) '97 Crown Vics from the old Chevy's. Then, with the new 98-99 Crown's, they were gone. (cryin'!!)

  • what district are you assigned to and please be safe Cleveland is a rough city

  • God bless you & BE CAREFULL !

  • I grow up in cleveland Ohio and I used to love it when I say cleveland police in their older 80's Caprices flying down the road with sirens on whelen light bar that looked sweet.

  • One of my all-time favorite sirens, the Whelen WS 227A. I'm looking for one but they're very hard to find these days.

  • Cleveland, Ohio police dept still has a few of these relics with the Edge lightbars on 96' Ford Taurus's. The four buttons were color coded red, blue, yellow, and green. I don't remember the exact order. Whelen made a mistake with the 295HFS and SL series they suck they are two high pitched and everyone has them everywhere. Now Cleveland has the Whelen Cencom Gold and liberty lightbar, Good God is that a mess blinding light and buttons galore It's awful how what worked great is now obsolete.

  • they are not high pitched anymore the cencom is not high pitched at all

  • scanlocks are not high pitched it was the hf 100 model from the early 90s that was high pitched which I cant stand.

  • I love that!!

  • I wish they had that with powercall. That would sound good.

  • Check out Leaving the Station video.

  • MEMS,an ambulance service based out of Little Rock,AR used to have sirens like this.

  • aye chris...was this siren made by carson...looks just like one...

  • No sir, this is a 100% Whelen item. It somewhat resembled the Carson/SVP Magnum controller...but i can guarantee the 227A is not a Carson product.

  • @chrisv4096

Are you positive about that? Have you seen inside the siren? The only reason I ask is because I have a WS-295 that I figured was made by Whelen. Well, when I had it apart this weekend to work on it, on the circuit board was stamped "Made By Carson Manufacturing Inc". Never knew Carson made sirens for Whelen, lol...

  • SFPD on their Chevy Astros in the late 80's had them . So did Memphis and Cleveland PD as featured on "Cops" .

  • I liked the episode when Memphis PD answered 2 shooting calls.I liked the air horn on it.The episodes in Cleveland when they were chasing the car that crashed into the guardrail had those in use, too.

  • I remember watching both episodes hearing this siren

  • As a matter of fact i saw that episode last night on the WB. This is a real attention getter.

  • I love the deep tone airhorn and the yelp on the that old whelen. thanks for the demo! 5stars chris!

  • I see the know controle is the same the way the tone words are they are like the sa1

  • Any idea where I could find one of these old siren units still operational? Memphis Police used to have these on there old cars and I was trying to find one to install on a old firetruck being restored.

  • These are hard to find, and are expensive when found.

  • Mass state police used and I believe Rhode Island state police used them as well

  • Cleveland had those sirens in there cars

  • This is my favorite siren my ambulance corp that I belonged to had a 1984 Ford bruan ambulance that had this siren in it it got people too move out of the way thats for sure

  • KICK ASS KICK ASS KICK ASS!! This is MY HIGH!!!! I Love the OLD 80's Whelen 224 and 227A. If you want to be DISTINGUISHED in your emergency response siren, this is what stands out when your responding. This unit mated with a Project-A-Flex speaker or 9000 Edge strobe lightbar speaker, you ARE IN BUSINESS. LONG LIVE THE INFAMOUS CLEVELAND POLICE SIREN. Everything else just sounds the same..... :(

  • Memphis Police also used them

  • HELL YES!!!!!

  • my dick just got very very hard....they dont make good sirens like this anymore

  • I can't find a 224 or 227...I've tried everywhere

  • They are hard to come by and if you find one, hold it for dear life. I was lucky to come across this, but i might be willing to sell it if the price is right. ;-)

  • Mine is in a vault at Ft. Knox. :)

It is truly a treasure! 8 Second Wail Cycle compared to today's 3 Second Wail Cycle.

  • how old is this siren

  • Its from the early 80's.

  • it looks very good for its age

  • It was in production from 1985-1990. When the full size Edge 9000 lightbar was hitting the market, these controller/siren combo used to control the lightbar. Notice the 4 push buttons for left alley, right alley, take down and the red push button was for the Hi/Lo night strobe output.

  • I've seen them on the post-1994 pre-1999 Suburbans and old ambulances and rescues. Great siren units they are.
