  • Simply greate

  • uberirdisch

  • so so wonderful, maravilloso, me conmovio profundamente

  • Much better than the deutsche,,, somehow sharp and oma

  • Response to "IfYourMomWereATaco" more than 33,400 listeners have hear this Marian Anderson performance of "Standchen" but only about 6200 have heard her rendition of "Gretchen am Spinnrade" which they would enjoy - she is accompanied by Franz Rupp who helped her with German pronunciation

  • Responding to "If your mom were a Taco" you are correct that "Gretchen" is one of Schubert's most famous songs, but not everyone has heard Marian Anderson perform it with Franz Rupp at piano.

  • Do NOT bother. The very real problems that beset that once fine country is due to the policies which those particular Americans have forced upon this once peaceful and prosperous nation. I refer of course to the very right wing groups and their policies that prevent the best governance and the best performance of the economy. I speak as an American observer and a Liberal Democrat of many years,

  • In C minor.

  • beautiful

  • Marian Anderson's piano accompanist is Franz Rupp 1901-1992 a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany who made recordings with violinist Fritz Kreisler 1930s + became Marian Anderson's accompanist 1940 - 1965. He also did a great deal to teach her Schubert songs + the German language + for many years was associated with Curtis Institute of Philadelphia.

  • A goddess. What a marvelous human being, and phenomenal singer. God bless her.

  • If you like this Marian Anderson Schubert performance (as I do) hear her also in the less well-known Gretchen Am Spinnrade -Gretchen at the spinning wheel' based on Goethe's Faust. The "Gretchen' has a remarkable piano accompaniment that mimics the sound of a spinning wheel- one of Schubert's first published works from about 1811 age eleven.

  • @Lactoris1 I'm not sure where you've been, but Gretchen is one Schubert's most famous songs....

  • Great, is`nt she?

  • Her enunciation is better than any opera singer I have ever heard, including all the famous greats that spring to mind when you think of opera, male and female.

  • Who is the pianist, and what model piano?

  • There is a legend that when Roosevelt addressed the DAR, he began: Fellow Immigrants. I love hearing Marian Anderson here!

  • I had an old Victor LM 98 with Marian Anderson in the 1950s with performances of the Rellstab-Schubert "Standchen" and the Ave Maria based on Walter Scott. These remain my favorites of all Schubert.s great 800 songs

and all classical music. Even Fritz Wunderlich can't match Marian Anderson, and incredible voice and human being, of whom America must always be proud.

  • A little gem. Thank you.

  • Danke!

  • Every single syllable is a revelation compared to the renditions of some German speaking singers.

    This lady's singing is impeccable.

    Thank you for posting!

  • I am curious -- have the Daughters of the American Revolution ever apologized to Ms Anderson?

  • probably not, I'm not too sure though

  • How does one 'apologize' for ignorance, intolerance and racist behavior?

  • Of course you are correct, but the gesture is not without meaning. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd recently apologized for past government's maltreatment of the Aborigines. An apology implies a promise not to sin again.

  • @zeissghost Do NOT bother. • Ms. Anderson finally sang in Constitution Hall at the invitation of an apologetic and more enlightened DAR in 1943.

  • Having been given this song to learn, the way that she is so distinct in pronunciation is just amazing. What a professional.

  • Absolutely beautiful...

Lovely legato, diction...(although I don't speak German...she's sings so clearly).

Love it...thanks for uploading...where can I get this recording? Can someone tell me please? :)

  • Her diction is marvellous!

  • hearing this makes me think why those white supremacists back then barred her performance due to her race...i mean seriously, had we not find ways to keep record of this awesome performance, we would've missed out on A LOT

  • What a beautiful performance. Who is the pianist? Thanks!

  • Un peu plat, le piano...

  • This is one of the most elevated and insightful renditions of this sacred lied we have - and there is a lot of competition out there!

    Thank you for sharing this.

Adding the text gives you a chance to see how tuned in she was to the poetry.

    Absolutely beautiful.

  • Beautiful! A beautiful performance from a beautiful soul.

  • My vocal teacher was telling me that this is a song only for male voices and in no case i should never try to sing it ...but i did not obey to his instructions !

How can someone , a woman in our case , ignore the marvellous Standchen of Shubert ? to tell you the truth i take some courage after having listened to this recording ..........

  • The teacher is a pumpkinhead. Is it a man or a woman? Male idiotic chauvinists abide in "cultural circles"' but there are some foolish women who go blindly after what they were taught by males.

  • yeah, me 2!

  • WOW!

  • awsomeeeee!!!!!!

  • Blameless and open-hearted interpretation. Much obliged.
