People don't understand mixing kickdrum and bass a lot of the time, It's actually quite simple. If you use kick samples you hardly need to EQ them, except for brushing up horrible frequencies. You don't cut around 500hz on both kick and bass, you do it one one or the other... depending on the music genre usually. Recorded kicks usually require sound processing (like boosting the low end by a touch) but samples 90% of the time don't need any boosting.
When I try boosting 50hz this way (and this hard), it makes the kick drum sound much better but it also makes it peak higher, making me lose about 5 or 6dB of master headroom every time. What am I doing wrong?
@Campusanis Try to boost it less on the EQ like +2 at 50Hz instead of +6. If you think it's not enought +2 and need a +6 boost, then try to use a compresser on your kick. Even better is a multi band compresser wich allows you to compress only the 50hz region. If you have an envelope plug-in reduce the release of the kick, it will give more room to your basses in the mix and prevent overdub/amplification. Hope it's gonna help you :)
John you are great man! I love your lessons, got the 8 hours mixing session, learned a lot. The snare here sounds really fat and punchy and has a nice reverb sound... because i love the 80's arena rock snare sound I really would love to know how you achieve that sound? cheers
thanks a lot i was going to give up hahaha. i was trying to make my bass drum to sound better in the mix but for i wasnt able to hear it, i was boosting the high frequencies for some reason. I thought it would make it sound like those metal songs. I have a lot to learn.
you can also eq the rest of it down so to not raise the volume but raise the boost

tip: sometimes its neccesary to adjust the frequency of the gated sine-channel acording to the bassnotes. so they don´t overlap/kill each other.
