I cry when I hear this song. Its perfect. Chrissi's voice is perfect for this song. I first heard this when I was 9. I've been listening to it every day since then. Im 13 now, and I still love it. It is on the soundtrack for the movie... but to be fair, this is the remake. It is written and recorded by Steve Earle, though Emmylou Harris also recorded it around the same time, with Earle playing guitar.

Sorry, but you are misinformed. I love Townes, but this is by Steve Earle. It was the first song he wrote after he got clean. It is on his Train A Comin' album. Townes never even sang it as far as I know, and it is not on his albums.

It's by Steve Earle. It was the first song he wrote after getting clean from a long addiction to heroin and, later, crack. He was arrested and cleaned up in jail.

It's sort of an apology to one, or maybe several, women. He was "just too high." Mexico was one of the places he was at his worst, and he left one wife to follow another woman there.

He has now been clean 15 years and still writing great music. Look for his version here on youtube. There is a great one with Emmylou Harris.

By the way, it might be worth noting that in an interview with Steve's son Justin, Justin said there are women all over the southeast who think it is about them, but he (Justin) thinks it is more about saying goodbye to drugs. Steve, though, has called it a "ninth step in the key of C" (the step in which recovering alcoholics and addicts work to make amends with those they have hurt.)

There are a couple of biographies of Steve, one by David McGee and one by Lauren St. John. They give some insight into his music, though there are some gaps and errors, too. I think his comment about it being a "ninth step" was from an interview, though both books say he wrote the song in rehab.

Must say I like the Steve/Emmy Lou version best, but I tend to like her more on duets.

The song, 'Goodbye', by The Pretenders is surprisingly hard to find. HMV do not stock the GI Jane soundtrack (the only album that includes the song) - and no Pretenders CD's feature it at all. Go to Itunes, and they do not carry the song, and Amazon sell the entire soundtrack at a grossly inflated price. In order to track the song down, I was forced to pay in dollars for a promotional CD released in 1997, via an American eBay seller. So for anybody else wanting to get the song, good luck...
