  • It's a song about a guy who got busted for drugs in another country, Falcon and The Snowman. It's on the soundtrack.

  • @Evaztlb in fact, the movie is about two young American men, Christopher Boyce (played by Timothy Hutton) and Daulton Lee (played by Sean Penn), who sold U.S. security secrets to the Soviet Union.

  • ok is this song about uk laws and way of life not like america or finally, people realized that america isn't the promise land like every body think it is . America congresss as is lead it's people and my opinion no better then any other countries. America isn't like it was when our ancestries came over here.

  • awesome song, awesome man. sha la la la la!

  • thumbs up if u sing "This is not a miracle"

  • Une voix hors du commun, des yeux magiques, un talent sans borne, super look ds ce clip, vs êtes habité M. Bowie pour ravir ainsi nos oreilles, j'ai presque votre âge & vs écoute depuis " life on mars " . Merciiiiiiii

  • gorgeous vocals, way to go David!!!

  • Great song!

  • Fantastic!

  • Great song!

  • David Bowie's got awesome voice! love him... ^______^

  • gamzee makara probably wouldn't like this

  • bowie knew something most americans still haven"t realized

  • This would make a great unofficial theme song for the Ron Paul campaign.

  • chorus are great, and david is WONDERFUL !!!

  • Another example of back up singers nearly ruining a live rendition.

  • 2011-wake-up-guy,s,,,,,this is not america thank you mr,bush

  • @mantatnam I see you're a 23 year old child from Bosnia-Herzogovina. You and your brethren are probably angry about NATO bombing your Serbian friends into submission. You don't even know what this song is about....you're too young. this song was originally recorded by Bowie and Pat Metheny before you were even born! So shut your trap!!!

  • @esf428 this is not about a song anymore.its about your "american statement"..i dont hate anything....and if you have to know i am a Croat from BiH...but since you are an american you dont know what you are talking about......so i think i will shut up so you can shut up too :D

  • @mantatnam You are obviously a stereotypical imbecile! It's not your fault though, it's your parents for creating you! So you think you're the self-appointed spokesman for "the rest of the world".......dork!!!

  • Hey-TheNewSurvivalist......you're a moron!!!! This was the theme song to the film "The Falcon and the Snowman" which came out in 1985. It has no relation to your idiotic rant concerning contemporary issues. I looked at your picture and you look like the Unabomber! If you hate the U.S. so much you imbecilic troll.....then take a hike to points yonder!!!!!!

  • @esf428 you are obviously a stereotypical american...and bealieve me the rest of the world would agree....and whos fault is that...its probably not yours...

  • I sat hear crying as I cant believe the magnitude of talent. This and Absolute Beginners...oh heaven has to be close

  • Oooooo i LOVE the hair!!!!

  • Thank GOD for real music. This whole bank grooooooves perfectly. David is again best in class.

  • Unbelievable performance !!!!

  • killer perfomance

  • That bass player totally rocks! Take it from another bass player. This song is so appropriate for today. This is not America, "land of the free & home of the brave." This is Amerika, "land of the slaves & home of the cowards." Say nothing while your masters wage unconstitutional wars & invade sovereign nations to expand the globalist corporate empire & let the TSA grope your women and children while you watch football. What a bunch of emasculated, castrated, de-humanized, pussies! Man Up America!

  • @thenewsurvivalist -you're a pussy you dirty looking, Unabomber resembling idiot!

  • ...Clinton..Bush..Obama.....This is not America!!!

  • como hace hablar el bajo en esta cancion-la bajista me da buen royo la manera que tiene estudiadas las notas, todo memoria...

  • Aestheticism, talent, purity.

  • David Robert Jones is style

  • Gail Ann Dorsey

  • does anyone know who is that bald girl plays guitar? she is so pretty.

  • Well, perhaps. But the post-moderns put too much emphasis on DE-construction. It's a lot easier to destroy than to built, to construct. Often times, artistic deconstruction comes off a lot like esthetic terrorism; knock it down, blow it up, ridicule and mock it....oh wow, that's so cool! Seems pretty petulant to me.

  • what a talent.....i can't even believe it

  • Um, love his work in general. But isn't this piece just sorta ham-handed, mediocre, and OVER-politisized? Vonnegut did this when he grew much older, forgot the quiet, unobtrusive and therefore universal appeal of his earlier work in favor of the unidimensional, of--in a word--propaganda. Guess I'm going back to Bowie's earlier stuff.

  • you must be joking, this is the deconstruction of rock, it's pure feeling pounded out on rythym

  • this is the lead song from the great movie falcon and the snowman starring a very young Sean Penn and Ray Liotta. A novice government intelligence technician (Liotta) finds evidence of CIA involvement in trowing elections and propping up puppets and decides to pass this information to the Russians to expose the operation in the interest of tru American values. Liotta assisted by his drug addict friend (Penn) are discovered and stopped.

    BASED ON A TRUE STORY!

  • @lostbuffalo Timothy Hutton, not Ray Liotta.

  • @Hgclaw damn I'm getting old lol

  • @lostbuffalo me, too, and it smarts! lol

  • this man was his time ahead

  • I'm sure someone has pointed this out in the preceding 427 comments, but FFS this song was written for the film The Falcon and the Snowman - it is NOT some sort of political statement on behalf of David Bowie or Pat Metheny (the writers). It DIRECTLY relates to the true story on which the book and subsequent film were based. People are so f'ing lazy, they don't bother to investigate, they just make assumptions and roll with them.

  • Semplicemente magnifico 100*********

  • love love

  • A voice so pure...my angel

  • hou,je,van,bowie,ik,,wel,live,super,ik,droomde

  • a great bassist why ?!?! because shes black !!!! lol typical white liberal guilt

  • @Murderisart hmm, maybe you should look in the mirror, feeling guilty lately? I assume he likes the bass player because the bass is super tight and funky

  • @Murderisart Lol. Someone pays a compliment; and you make it about race. "Hey, I love your haircut; it suits you." "Why? Is it because I'm black?!"

  • u may be right chesty, but dos,nt alter the fact that the u.s were spying on so called friendly countries, thats why so many ( what u call liberals) sold your country out...dickhead. not only these 2 guys in this movie...so go back and listen to britney spears, and the rest of that so called pop crap..

  • u may be right chesty, but dos,nt alter the fact that the u.s were spying on so called friendly countries, thats why so many ( what u call liberals) sold your country out...dickhead.

  • Style doesn't suit Bowie - Bowie suits style.

  • @Muckylittleme David Bowie doesn't write or sing good songs, he COMMANDS them.

  • @Prometheus1st WORD!!!! - J

  • What BS. Falcon & snowman was about some stupid liberals that got caught spying for the commies, and "Badshans" is so full of crap it's unreal. Go back to smoking your bongs, morons. Bowie had some great music, but, when he whines politically, he's totally off-base. Bowie grew up smoking (& riding) pole in England / Europe - we don't need him to tell us what "America" is, or isn't.. This was one of his weakest, crappiest songs - labeling it "political genius" is just stupid.

  • @Chesty24MAU Stereotypical republican is stereotypical.

  • @Chesty24MAU How is this "one of his weakest, crappiest songs"? On what basis do you judge it so? The song is an allegory of a lost dream (the American Dream). Perhaps the song hits a little too close to the truth huh? Feeling a little uncomfortable maybe?

  • @Chesty24MAU "we don't need him to tell us what "America" is, or isn't." - well, you don't really need or accept anyone else's opinion either, do you? That's part of the problem. Americans only need apply, when it comes to forming an opinion on America. Yet Americans may have an opinion on anybody and any place else, regardless of whether they can so much as find it on a map... Wait, there's more: "some stupid liberals" - right, I forget, you have further exclusions. Any other group excluded? :)

  • Too good !

  • Too good !

  • Watch the movie "the Falcon and the Snowman" this song is based on.

Bowie and Gail Ann Dorsey, perfect combination

  • a old rocker that crossed all the ilnes of music styles, and has class,

  • Damn genius - live sounds even better than his recording

  • LO AMO¡¡¡

  • David Bowie quando vieni in Italia?

  • I had the pleasure to seem him twice in concert..once by himself and the other with Nine Inch Nails as the opener. I loved the one with just Bowie....you don't want to share him with anyone ;-)

  • are you kidding me his voice sucks sounds like shit wow as if ppl think this is good singing wtf i never understood why ppl like bowie he is a horrible singer

  • @EROCK055 dont worry! when you get older, you'll understand, just like that sucky schoolwork that racks your brain right now.

  • @EROCK055 You are crazy, and deaf, and probably "challenged". Bowie rocks! And doesn't care what you think. When you grow up, you'll wish you "sucked" this bad! Mind you - when I fell in love with Bowie, I was under 10. Apparently, not everyone was granted taste at birth. "Judge not, lest ye be judged"

  • @EROCK055 No - you suck! Bowie is a genius.

  • @EROCK055 I don't know about that, but you are surely a horrible writer. "his voice sucks sounds like shit wow". Why don't you learn to write before expressing your inane opinions?

  • Comment removed

  • @EROCK055 i'll beakdown for you most not all but most 1st heard bowie when they were off their face on hard drugs my advice to you is when your balls drop little boy smoke some weed and put some bowie on then and then you'll rethink you stupid childish comments i went on your channel you are a wierd little messed up kid what the fuck do you want to buy gasmasks for? i don't normally comment on people spelling seriously you spelling is terrible maybe you start reading some books pay attention tbc

    Cheers from luebeck!!

  • Favourite of his 80's

  • how powerful his voice is...oh my gosh

  • Bowie stil lives in New York but he has basically decided to retire [at the moment anyway.

  • I love this song, David Bowie is awesome.............Andrea, I love you Bowie

  • Classic!!

  • it's really not America. it's a police state. amazing he realized it so early.

  • fucking amazing not a bad note sang!!legend

  • @badshans Ah right, I guess he "realised" that America is, in your words, "a police state", when he was commissioned to compose the song in the early 80's by Orion Pictures to serve as the soundtrack to The Falcon and the Snowman, a true story about two American who spied for the Soviets. Even the lyrics, virtually spoon fed to him by the script of the film, don't bear out any sort of political statement in your terms. 23 likes for utter nonsense. Brain matter is in scarce supply.

  • @Briterican001 Oh, bloody hell, another trivia buff! The message carries past accounting books and contracts, can't you grasp that? Prose, poetry, lyrics (art in general has that going for it) : they can have layers upon layers of meaning, past contractual agreements and bloody useless trivial facts! There *is* an issue, there always was, and always will be: there is no Utopia, and every crumb of freedom and human right has to be earned and kept. Brain matter...? Are you capable of abstraction?

  • @BeyondDreamTime So what exactly does your self-righteous reply have to do with my assertion that Metheny and Bowie are NOT making some sort of anti-American statement like everyone seems to think they are? Anna Marie Jopek FFS (who recorded this song with Metheny a few years ago) is even getting blamed on these forums for anti-Americanism because of this song, even though she was 15 when it was written lol. Just for singing it! Abstract me an answer to that, Mr Look-at-the-big-brain-Beyond.

  • @Briterican001Funny that, *you* calling my reply self-righteous. :) This is what you wrote: "Ah right, I guess he 'realised' that America is, in your words, 'a police state'[...]"&"Even the lyrics [...] don't bear out any sort of political statement in your terms. 23 likes for utter nonsense. Brain matter is in scarce supply." I apologise for having missed your "assertion." Would you like a deeper exploration of your subconscious or of the archives? I was wrong: you're far too abstract. :)

  • @Briterican001 Here's more of the pot calling the kettle sooty: "People are so f'ing lazy, they don't bother to investigate, they just make assumptions and roll with them." To assume so broadly that "people are so f'ing lazy" - well, that is the assumption you decided to make ; you then rolled with it - and are still rolling! So humble and self-effacing you are! :) Why, you put me to shame Mr. Look-at-my-analytical-anal-trivial-mind-Bittercan. I effing apologise! Did that sooth your ego? :)

  • @Briterican001 And as far as this song not being a so-called "anti-American" statement, I agree: it is not. Although, if America is now dealing -- as it seems -- with a deepening messianic complex, saying things akin to "if you're not with me, you're against me," well, then *anything* other that unconditional and unquestioning blind faith in that country will default to being labelled "anti-Americanism." So where does that leave us, and this song, you think? ;) Now there's a better debate!...

  • @BeyondDreamTime Wow dude lol. By the way I agree completely with this last post of yours... but, FFS dude get a life! My email is going crazy with your comments! I said what I wanted to say, and then I replied to your reply. I come back now to find you stalking me through the thread! LOL, when will I learn to avoid these "forums" and stay on the real debate sites (advertisement alert: google "EVC forum")

  • @Briterican001 :) "but, FFS dude get a life!" Thank you, Briterican - I have several. :) Some I even had to leave behind for reasons that relate perhaps to issues to which this little 'ditty' alludes. "]...] when will I learn [...]" - yes, you got caught up in the maelstrom. :) I'm only collecting sounds to entertain me while I'm online; these comments of mine are part of incidental background activity. :) Will take a look at your suggested site, Briterican, thank you. :) (I'm not stalking. :D)

  • @BeyondDreamTime And I'm just curious about one thing, as your last post renewed my respect for yet another faceless youtube entity... Why, if you actually agree with me, as you said above, did you find it necessary to disrespect me in a total of (uses fingers to add them up) 4 separate posts, only to NOW say in a sort of oh-and-by-the-way fashion, "I agree"?

  • @Briterican001 No space to answer your question properly.:) You care for a short cliché? "I'm complicated." :) Well, you were also disrespectful in your earlier replies, caught up as you were, in the flurry, and that provoked a reaction. So I suppose I also got "caught up," to some extent. Sorry, mea maxima culpa.:D However, disagreeing with your tone & pitch does not infer I disagree with your main argument, and vice versa.:) I appreciate your respect, Briterican, and now you have mine. Pax. ;)

  • @BeyondDreamTime Fair enough! Post on, you seem to be exponentially more intelligent than 99% of the people you'll find posting here, so all that reactionary "getting caught up" stuff from both of us aside, I wish there were more who actually provided substantial commentary rather than hateful one liners.

  • True to the original, live when its best. You can sense the song. Bowie rocks. Truly amazing voice, timing and feeling.

  • He's British isn't he?

  • @ILOVEAMERICA56 David Jones is a born and bred Londoner.

  • @ILOVEAMERICA56 he's from london but lived in the usa for a long time . i think he may have moved back to u.k now because of what america has become ( a fascist state ) everything it was against .

  • This bassist is one fo the greatest player!!!!!!

  • @SEKIHIRO5340 and she's a great vocalist too!

  • @SEKIHIRO5340 Her name is Gail Ann Dorsey. Look in YouTube for 'Under Pressure' where she also sings with Bowie. Fantastic.

  • oh my god. I have tears in my eyes. And I think I love the bass player.

  • FABULOUS!

  • What a timely song, with the oil corporatists dealing us a blow that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will still be able to witness: the destruction of our Gulf Coast by these money pigs, who want to find a way to blame Obama. They're sick, and their money has bought off the regulators, who could've mandated safer conditions, but didn't. This is not America.

  • @wygakyl I understand and support what your saying 100%

Off topic *Im from the gulf coast :(*

  • @GUNSHOT18592 We are all sickened by what a life changing travesty the people of Louisiana have and will continue to go through...you guys are looking at this oil seeping in; we don't feel it as bad, tho it's a majot sense of panic, that they showed more of "Balloon Boy" on TV than any major segment on this disaster. Oil money has paid them off to shut the hell up. I wish you the best, and with the worst ecological disaster upon you, Godspeed.

  • I remember this theme song from the movie "The Falcon and the Snowman" with Sean Penn and Tim Hutton. About two Americans spying for the Russians, thus "this is not america" theme music. A dark period during the cold war.

  • I love this song, and 'I'm Afraid Of Americans' very much..

Please get David Bowie on the Alex Jones Show.
