The NHRA had no business racing nitro cars at Englishtown...terrible short sand pit, and even had the ESPN boom camera not been there, at the time the pit ended with the right retaining wall curving over to meet the left one, creating a nice concrete death barrier that Kalitta would have hit...that and the sand/pea gravel was about 4 inches above grade from the asphalt, which caught the front of Kalitta's car and launched him upwards roof first (said as much in the police report). terrible

which is an oxygenated fuel which means it carrys oxygen inside it unlike gas. there are cars running these engines on more conventional racing gas like q16/c16 and only make about 2k hp compared to the 6-7k estimated on funny cars.(the most ive seen any dyno able to read is 2k hp/ft lbs of torque before its maxxed)

also while the cars are "hemis" they arnt dodge engines for anyone who thinks that, or ford,gm,toyota for that matter. everything is custom made including the block iirc cubic inchs of displacement is 500 but i dont have my nhra rulebook anymore since there no strip on island. they are hemis because the cylinder heads have a hemispherical combustion chamber aka half a sphere. in the end though the reason they make so much power isnt even that its the fuel of nitromethane.
