@TheGoose428 Wow another guy who has no idea how these engines work. Imagine that. These engine's blow headgaskets from overheating, and rarely from over-boosting. This truck maxes out at 18-20 lbs of boost. It's been almost 2 years since this video was taken, and the engine is still perfectly fine. Have fun making assumptions on something you know nothing about.
Dont know why the yanks are obsessed with Turbo whistle and how much black shite it can put out the exhaust......black smoke is WASTED fuel.... youd last about 5 mins over here before somebody ratted you on the blower to the ministry and put you off the road....
@Jeffreyrno .. Grow up wont ya..how old are you ? 12 ? is that reply supposed to illicit similar? I suppose i asked for it eh? @turtlezed lmfao, me grow up? and who's being a little bitch by trolling diesel video's? btw, im a ASE certified technician and i can assure you that diesels are no where near as pollutant as a gas or electric engine/motor. lol 10 years behind. i suggest you go look up some facts before you speak. and look up what a yank means while your at it. because it's clear im from the south. plus everything in this world today has cancer in it so you cant escape it any way you go about it
@Jeffreyrno. ....yank is just a generic term used by the rest of the world to describe Americans.I would'nt want to get into that whole North / South argument.I have an old 6.5td chevy and i'm always interested to see if theres any info worth gleaming from Youtube. I too am a diesel fitter of some 25 years and i stand by my original comment.
@turtlezed totaly fine man, i own a 1994 6.5 td 1/2 ton with 465,000 original miles. i change the oil every 20,000 and i use mobil 1, transmission has never had the fluid changed but was fitted with a gearvenders over/under drive in 2008 and it's still going strong. this is one of the many diesels i do own. If you have been doing this for 25 years then why do you talk shit about them dumping black smoke when you know thats what they do when under a load or being boosted
@turtlezed and i understand where your coming from if it's excessively smoking like some of these dip shits do on yt when they over fuel the trucks for more power, but it's obviously not the situation when we are lookin at the 6.5l engines.
@turtlezed I want to see these facts about why black smoke is dangerous to your health and maybe you dont understand a diesel very well...under load it will puff out black smoke and tuned it will puff out more and yes it may be wasted fuel so put a bigger turbo on it then you have fixed your problem but you still make more power. ill blow my black smoke all over your face tree hugger its nothing more then sut that falls to the ground after a few minutes. Next time just dont comment
how come the holset turbos dont have a loud whistle like some of the p-stroke and dmax factory turbos? i heard a late maodel dmax the other day that would rival a 6.0 powerstroke and he said it was a factory turbo.
@Jacksonkellyfreak The new turbo's are all variable vane, or variable geometry turbos. The one in the video is a VGT turbo. When the vanes are open all the way you get more of a rumble from the exhaust and barely any whistle. Close the vanes to their tightest position and you'll loose the rumble and have much more whistle.
Not sure why it works like that, as i've never really dug into one.
The holset VGTs are capable of that same whistle as well.
@iamdave0887 It whistles like that cause the vanes close really tight, like to 7cm. The vanes in these turbos control the exhaust housing to open to 23cm an close to like 7cm. That what makes them so valuable. Open the vanes up all the way the exhaust is free flowing, close them and its restrictive, hence the whistle
@xmodrock Modern diesels are leaps and bounds over 80s/90s diesels. The 6.5 and the 6.2 are running 60s/70s technology, save for the electronic IP on the 94-00 6.5s.
@chevroletTD no need to use the F bomb really. It's a Peninsular marine intake bolted to an "F" code 6.5 intake. The Peninsular intake can be had for around $60-70 straight from Peninsular Diesel.
pretty cool.. i used to have a 6.5 with a chip, injectors, heith diesel boost controller, ported intake, bhaf, etc.. it hit 20 psi once and that was the end of the engine.. now i have a 97 12v cummins and wont look back..
@possmguts I don't have a followup video in my possession. I don't know if the owner of the truck ever made one. The turbo ran him ~$150, plus plumbing for the intake(not sure what he spent here) and the peninsular upper intake which was ~$60. He also built a custom mechanical VGT control(not sure what he's got into that). The performance with this turbo and Heath's GL4 program is outstanding. The truck pulls really well all the way to redline.
I am interested on what you did for your intercooler, most of the ones i have seen are mounted where the skid plate is supposed to be, but yours looks like its right where the radiator is. Also how much work was it to get that turbo in, does it bolt up to original manifold?
@eightysixchevy This video is over a year old. That was just temporary since he had to fab the downpipe connection. He's running a full 4" exhaust with a straight through muffler exiting behind the rear wheel on the passenger side.
@6speedin Actually 15 lbs of boost is the point where the stock turbos are beyond their efficiency range, and choking the engine. Raising the boost on a stock turbo truck any higher than 15 will cause intake air temps to skyrocket, raising EGTs in the process. That truck doesn't care about 18-20 psi regularly.
There are weak points to these engines as they are a light duty diesel engine first and foremost...but there are a ton of misconceptions about the 6.2/6.5's as well. Not everyone needs a 1200lb diesel with power potential only limited by how much money you have. I have mine as a simple, reliable, fuel efficient, awesome sounding alternative to a gas engine in my DD.
Hey any luck on an updated video? The w/g controller idea seems like one of the better designs ive seen... I know of a guy making a custom box setup to control it on a different truck am not sure if he plans to produce his design tho.... I also know the company fleece performance has a controller for the vgt that will supposedly work on any truck... Its a bit pricy tho.
Im doing same turbo on my 6.5 and would love to hear how it sounded open and closed up... Also a vid driving?
@JustRamIt91 Loads of progress. He's been able to drive it for a long time now. Actually ran into him today at the local advance auto. I"ll have to run over to his place and get an "update" video on of these days.
@cumminsfan1 No it doesn't. There wasn't enough room up front with the A/C condenser, oil cooler, trans cooler and radiator there. However it does have a Water to air intercooler right before the intake horn now, and the radiator for the intercooler is behind the front bumper. Although the water to air intercooler is fairly small before IC and after IC air temps are fairly far apart so it does work.
Hey my parents are giving my there 1993 gmc 6.5L diesel, i have been looking for some parts to make it faster, more torque. its pretty gutless, any tips?
I have and old 12v turbo off a cummins how do you make it work?
and any other products for the truck would be great help... thanks!
@IdahoAdventureBoys Stop over at Dieselplace (dot) com and check out the 6.5 section. You'll find all the info you'll ever need there. way more info than i could ever post here.
@baird396 He's running a max of 18 psi right now, and that's with the Pedal to the Metal. With the VGT wired open he won't hit those high boost numbers.
6.5 cheaper to build up than a cummins if u know what your doing marine injectors #9 resistor comp burn progesive injection of propane/water n a few other items all the pwer u ever need hi hp #,s are great in loads of fun but useless in the real world
how's about the 6.9 IDI that hit 1,200HP and 2,000 ft lbs of torque running 145 psi boost with compound turbos back in the 90s before everyone was doing it? Is that a POS too?
i wish it was my setup. I was at his house the other day. Truck looks better that it did in the video. Water to air intercooler installed now and a reflashed ECM. He says the truck really moves now. I drove it when it was stock save for a 4" exhaust. I'd love to drive it now and see the difference.
@04Forester Right now the VGT is wired wide open. He's working on a setup to control the VGT. I"M waiting to see exactly what he does, because I'm debating going the VGT route at some point as well.
@iamdave0887 Problem here is that I happen to also own a 6.5... It'll never hold much for ponies.... You'll crack the block open (I've seen it done) or shatter the crank. Yes, I know tougher blocks, cranks and rods are available.... But, for the money you spent, a 5.9 Cummins would be way farther ahead for horsepower... Heck, for no money what so ever I'm into the 280 hp range with my 95 Dodge....
But, I do think the VGT would be nice for some more low-end torque as the 6.5 is surely lacking.
The VGT was wide open in this video, therefore very little whistle. The loud whistle comes from the VGT being closed tighter and therefore the turbine/compressor spins faster.
It's not my truck. It's a friend's truck who lives across town. I'll have to see if i can get an updated video of the Water to Air intercooler setup on it.
The plan is to use a boost actuator from a later model Powerstroke to control the arm. Right now it's wired wide open and he's getting ~15 psi at wide open throttle.
