Per capita expenditure is a fairly standard way to measure government spending. Aside from that, your argument is wrong because the government should not give preferential treatment to citizens and so a fair way to alternatively spend that money in a way that helps everyone would result in that gain to the average family.

Yes we should be doing the things you mentioned. But the reason for going into Iraq was to set up a stable Democracy in the Middle East as an example for the rest of the people in the region. That they would see what they could have for their own countries, then peace and freedom would flourish. What a Dream, it didn't happen, I guess they don't want it or their not ready.
Democracy is growing in the middle east w/o overt war. There are large, grassroots, pro-democracy and reform movements in places like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Pakistan, etc.
The best thing would be to subtly give funds and legitimacy to these movements and use political & economic pressure to encourage reform. That helped democratize latin america.
Pakistan just had legitimate elections, and Musharraf stepped down as commander of the army. Democracy is possible w/o invading or war
I have very low expectations for peace in the Middle East. The radical elements there will never let it happen. When peace gets close, they kill and blow people up, pitting them against each other. This is what they did in Iraq when they blew up that gold doomed mosque in 2006. They set the people of Iraq against one another. They new exactly what they were doing. I believe the people of Iraq have hit rock bottom and that reconciliation and Democracy will happen from the ground up.
In Pakistan's recent elections, the islamist party gained about 2% of the vote. The rest went to more secular, progressive parties.
Huge swaths of grassroots movements in the mideast exist pushing for womens rights, student rights, religious rights, political rights, etc. Iraqi democracy may be a long time away, but other countries like Kuwait, Jordan or Qatar, have made alot of progress in recent decades.
My main point is; if the liberation of Iraq makes some Moslem's strap explosives onto their bodies and kill innocent men, women and children then so be it. Saddam Hussein was the only world leader apart from the leader of the Taliban, Mullah Muhammed Omar, who praised the 9/11 attacks. Saddam Hussein's agents met with Muhammed Atta, the leader of the 9/11 operation, in Hamburg during the planning stages of the attacks. Ansar-Al-Islam, an Al-Qaeda branch operated in Iraq against the Kurds. US special forces wiped them out during 2003 and found a camp set up by the Iraqi government with a mock up civilian jet liner used to train hijackers.
Saddam had used WMD in Halabja in 1988 killing thousands of Kurdish men women and children and against Iranian infantry during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980's. We know now that he did disarm after 1991 but without the knowledge of the international community who were led to believe that he still retained his stockpiles. The infastructure to manufacture remained but no delivery system. Al-Qaeda emerged since 1991 and it was only a matter of time before Saddam made hooked up with them.
Our intelligence failures are widely documented on the subject of the WMD's. The international community were led to believe that he retained stockpiles by US!! Powell went to the UN to try and convince everyone on evidence that was highly suspect even then. To leap to the conclusion that "it was only a matter of time" before Saddam hooked up with Al Qaida is ridiculous and unfounded. Hussein was a terrible man but there was and is no evidence that he worked with Al Qaida or intended to do so.
So now we are down to justifying the Iraq war with the thousands of US soldiers killed and maimed and the tens of thousands of dead Iraqi's because the man was a "snake". No I don't sleep well that he's dead because the price we have and are continuing to pay for it is way too high.

Saddam did not have WMD stockpiles after all. The only reason we know that now is because of the 2003 invasion. If Iraq had not invaded Saddam would have continued to pretend that still possessed them while at the same time lobbying to end UN sanctions so that he could recommence the build of WMD stockpiles without restriction. It has been proven that the WMD manufacturing infrastructure still existed in preparation for that possibility.
If the US pulls out of Iraq, Sunni and Shia extremists will launch an all out civil war to carve up the country and millions of Iraqis who voted for the constitution and in democratic elections will be thrown to the lions. Whoever wins the civil war will set up a theocratic state and will use Iraqi oil to fund war across the Middle East to establish a Muslim caliphate. Their Muslim allies in Europe and the US will try to overthrow our democratic governments using terror.
No one is suggesting an immediate and all out troop withdraw from Iraq (well except Ron Paul). The difference between people like Bush and McCain and Obama and Clinton is that the democrats want to pull troops out at a measured pace not only to safeguard their lives but to put real pressure on the Iraqi Goverment to worth through the issues. As long as American troops are on the ground doing the dirty work for them, they will continue to drag their feet on reconciliation.

Per capita expenditure is a fairly standard way to measure government spending. Aside from that, your argument is wrong because the government should not give preferential treatment to citizens and so a fair way to alternatively spend that money in a way that helps everyone would result in that gain to the average family.

I'm in California and I also believe the action in Iraq was correct. So, it's not isolated to New York. After a bunch of guys with razor blades destroyed the twin towers we couldn't afford to "wait and see" when we had a guy who was constantly attacking our planes because he didn't agree with the UN mandated no fly zone. There was evidence he had weapons and programs to create more. The evidence was wrong. If Bush had ignored the evidence he would have been wrong. Now Iraq is free. That's good.

Democracy is growing in the middle east w/o overt war. There are large, grassroots, pro-democracy and reform movements in places like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Pakistan, etc.
The best thing would be to subtly give funds and legitimacy to these movements and use political & economic pressure to encourage reform. That helped democratize latin america.
Pakistan just had legitimate elections, and Musharraf stepped down as commander of the army. Democracy is possible w/o invading or war

I have very low expectations for peace in the Middle East. The radical elements there will never let it happen. When peace gets close, they kill and blow people up, pitting them against each other. This is what they did in Iraq when they blew up that gold doomed mosque in 2006. They set the people of Iraq against one another. They new exactly what they were doing. I believe the people of Iraq have hit rock bottom and that reconciliation and Democracy will happen from the ground up.

In Pakistan's recent elections, the islamist party gained about 2% of the vote. The rest went to more secular, progressive parties.
Huge swaths of grassroots movements in the mideast exist pushing for womens rights, student rights, religious rights, political rights, etc. Iraqi democracy may be a long time away, but other countries like Kuwait, Jordan or Qatar, have made alot of progress in recent decades.

Saddam had used WMD in Halabja in 1988 killing thousands of Kurdish men women and children and against Iranian infantry during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980's. We know now that he did disarm after 1991 but without the knowledge of the international community who were led to believe that he still retained his stockpiles. The infastructure to manufacture remained but no delivery system. Al-Qaeda emerged since 1991 and it was only a matter of time before Saddam made hooked up with them.

Our intelligence failures are widely documented on the subject of the WMD's. The international community were led to believe that he retained stockpiles by US!! Powell went to the UN to try and convince everyone on evidence that was highly suspect even then. To leap to the conclusion that "it was only a matter of time" before Saddam hooked up with Al Qaida is ridiculous and unfounded. Hussein was a terrible man but there was and is no evidence that he worked with Al Qaida or intended to do so.

Saddam did not have WMD stockpiles after all. The only reason we know that now is because of the 2003 invasion. If Iraq had not invaded Saddam would have continued to pretend that still possessed them while at the same time lobbying to end UN sanctions so that he could recommence the build of WMD stockpiles without restriction. It has been proven that the WMD manufacturing infrastructure still existed in preparation for that possibility.

If the US pulls out of Iraq, Sunni and Shia extremists will launch an all out civil war to carve up the country and millions of Iraqis who voted for the constitution and in democratic elections will be thrown to the lions. Whoever wins the civil war will set up a theocratic state and will use Iraqi oil to fund war across the Middle East to establish a Muslim caliphate. Their Muslim allies in Europe and the US will try to overthrow our democratic governments using terror.

No one is suggesting an immediate and all out troop withdraw from Iraq (well except Ron Paul). The difference between people like Bush and McCain and Obama and Clinton is that the democrats want to pull troops out at a measured pace not only to safeguard their lives but to put real pressure on the Iraqi Goverment to worth through the issues. As long as American troops are on the ground doing the dirty work for them, they will continue to drag their feet on reconciliation.

Your forgetting that Bill Clinton enforced the air exclusion zone over Iraq and kept up miliary pressure on Saddam to disarm including a heavy bombing offensive in the late 1990's. If Gore became President in 2000 circumstances would have forced the issue on Iraq and military action would have resulted similar to Bush. Every Presidential candidate had a plan for Iraq post 1991 just as Obama, Hillary, McCain, Huckabee etc have scenario plans for hitting Iran and North Korea if the need arises.

The very reason you have a better chance of being struck by lightening than being killed in the US by Al-Qaeda is directly because of the War on Terror. Thousands of terrorists are pushing up daisies who would otherwise be plotting to attack America. You also have less chance of being killed by Nazis due to WW2.
