Whenever I see something wonderful like this clip I'm magically transported back in time. Graduated high school in 1972. For those of you who weren't born yet..well......we were having fun. And Terry Kath will live forever in the hearts, minds and fingers of all of us guitar players that emulated him. R.I.P. Terry, you were one of the best!
Terry wailing away on a Les Paul Recording model !!! you NEVER EVR see that!!! love the sound of those low impedance single-coil pick ups !!! freakin awesome !!!
As a Republican....I will sincerly pledge a vote for Obama if he can twist jann wenners arm to make Chicago the 2012 R&R Hall of Fame lead induction....I will never buy a copy of Rolling Stone...Jann needs to grow a di......fuck him
@Wojo8888 You cocksucking liberal cock breath obama loving America hating fucking pig. I hope you fucking choke on a fucking chicken bone you pathetic piece of dog shit.
@leeportcam remember that one time that the video playing was a chicago song about being really happy with the person you love? You should find somebody to love.
@Wojo8888 you have to be kidding ! That idiot is going to continue to kill jobs until we end up like crap hole europe. Aw heck we'll just print mo munay ! ...obama
Listen to Terry Kath's guitar playing! He was the man. It's been said that he was one of Hendrix's favorite guitarists. They're both playing for God now in that great amphitheater in the sky. My only regret with this video is that we don't have the entire song.
Danny Seraphine is one of my favorite drummers of all time. My band might try to do "I'm A Man" and "25 or 6 to 4".....I can't play like Danny but I'm going to give it my best shot!
@m42mike Yes Danny was one of my biggest influences too as a kid/teenager. I hear some of my licks today and catch a large bit of his style in my playing.
@MrVeesworld I wish I could say he influenced me, but I'm not nearly good enough to pull off the kind of stuff he did. I've only been playing for 3 years and am in Seraphine's age group....and had never played an instrument before, so it's a constant struggle just to play ANYTHING! LOL!
@m42mike That's okay. Just listen to the recordings as much as you can and play with them to try to figure out the licks. Especially the beginning lick of make me smile and the closing drum solo part. That pretty much sums up his entire repitoire or style in a nutshell.
My love, do you realize that it was the best time of our lives when we heard this song, when it felt like Terry was singing his heart out to us? We would take my first car to the 7/11 finding ways to hold hands even though I was taught to keep one hand at 10 at and the other at 2. How the speakers filled the car with that Chicago love that made all your lights turn green. I remember how you told me that some day I would miss you. And I miss you, my love, but remembering you here makes me smile!
I think of one word when I watch Terry in this video....TESTOSTERONE (as in he was such a totally rugged, individualistic, masculine gorgeous man). Okay, two words, testosterone and LOVE (as in I have ALWAYS loved Terry and I will ALWAYS love Terry)...What else can a girl say?
@carina2244 Amen. Preach it. The 3 Chicago vocalists at this time were a perfect, balanced blend: Terry with the rugged, raw, bluesy low register; Bobby Lamm with the wise lounge singer mid-range, and Cetera with his touch-the-clouds heights of crystalline snowflakes. In Hindu philosophy 3 components make the world function--the 3 gunas: [churchoftheeast.ca/catechism1/gunas.htm] Just remember that I'm describing their VOICES, not the men, when I compare their sounds to the gunas' qualities.
I have been listening since high school back in early 70's too. Always been my favorite group. Your so right about Terry Kath. I also think they had the best drummer / percussion man of all time! Great post. Thanks.
@GodlySkunk I was 17 too - 42 years ago when i first heard them. you are blessed dude. Terry Kath can pull the rug off any guitarist today Lifeislikeabeanstalk!
damn i'm 17 years old and i just heard chicago a few weeks ago. they're now one of my favorites. i wish my generation had some real music like this!!!!!

Gee, let's remove Chicago's best clips from utube so that no new listeners will ever see how great they were or buy their music. What a marvelous marketing strategy!
@whisky2roxy and Trashfished -- Hi! That was the one from Tanglewood. God, I miss that one too! ChicagoKid1969 had that,, but his channel has been nuked! I feel your pain! Cheers, Carina
@TheSweetSpot52 It is a Les Paul Professional he played that and the Strat at the same time. He played the legendary Telecaster with the stickers on it up to his death.
@hazor777 I believe they were last made in 1973 or 74. It was a limited edition guitar. The first ones were made in 1959. Since then Gibson has made custom guitars for musicians with similar pickup placement, for example variants of the custom version of the ES-335, called the CS (Custom Series)-335.
@drhey19 What's your opinion on Gibson LP's now? Would spend that kind of money or do you think Epiphones are rather competent guitars (in a professional sense) too? Ive heard that a Japanese co. 'Burns' , makes a good LP knockoff.....
@hazor777 I think that due to Gibson acquiring many other companies, including Epiphone, they have only raised the price on the same products. I've heard good reviews on Burns but I think they make mostly Strat style guitars with P-90 pickups. I've also heard good reviews on Peavy guitars as well as on Epiphone. If you aren't concerned about the name or the quality of the wood, Epiphone isn't bad. You can always easily add Gibson parts to the Epiphones.
Saw them in Milwaukee in early summer of 1973. I was 17 and took a beautiful blond girl named Sue. Every tune was note perfect. I remember they came back for the encore with about half of them smoking coffin nails. The encore was "Make Me Smile" . Later that night, Sue did.
@gregorytknudson played a tele alot as well-- uses humbuckers in them usually-uaed--sorry, the man played like a possessed dragon! man, he was one of a kind

Terry Kath did NOT write Make me Smile. It is part of a much longer song called Ballad for a Girl in Buchannon, which was written by James Pankow, the trombonist. The song Colour my World (sung by Terry Kath) is also part of that same song.
Terry Kath was the heart and soul of Chicago, without a doubt. But the NYE performace of Dialogue is great b/c all the band members were at their best in that performance. I am not a huge Cetera fan, but I like him in that performace.
