@gulfstream020 what behavios have i shown gave you the assumption i was mistaken for an animal?
The fact that I know how to work a computer? the fact that i graduated from school? The fact that I make music? I understand your comment doe, you mean blacks in general right? Fair enough but there's a lot I can say about whites like you did, but I won't say them because I'm not like you. We all have racial thoughts run thru our head, but it's what you do with those thoughts that count...
Jophie12: Get over it Girl. Thousands of whites fought and died to end slavery so 90% of the Blacks in Chicago could collect a Gov. Check. Say I have a question: How's that "Hope & Change" working out for Ya?
Oh, yeah! It's really funny. Especially the surprise ending where good Ol' Uncle Tom kills Simon Legree with his ball and chain and everyone lives happily ever after. That part's the funniest.
So saying, we can joke and be racist, but you can't isn't fair. & White comedians do make jokes about black people, but not to the extent that blacks do whites. Honestly, until we can find a common ground, movies like this shouldn't be shown, but black people do have some work to do as well.
White people need to realize that because of slavery, & the way black people were treated by mostly white people, the stigma will carry on until modern times. No, I wasn't a slave, and no, the whites on here did not enslave another black person. But because of the mistakes of others in the past, certain things just aren't allowed now, and are deemed offensive. Black people need to realize that we should be fighting for equality, not any type of superiority over whites.
What's the saddest part about this is that I bought this cartoon for my 4 year old from Walmart! After Van Beuren's studio closed in 1936, his "inventory" fell into the hands of other companies- including Official Films, who reissued most of his library for "home movie" audiences in the '40s, and TV release in the '50s. Some of Van Beuren's "Aesop's Sound Fables" from 1929 through '33 were reissued as part of Official's "Jungle Jinks" series. This was originally released as "Dixie Days" in March 1930, co-directed by John Foster & Mannie Davis, with "synchronized" music by Gene Rodemich.
Don - you've made numerous negative statments, referring to these characters as 'animals' even though they "represent" black people in jungle. There is no debate that blackface is racist. R you?
To claim this isn't racism is 1) incredible ignorance or 2) extreme hatred or 3) apologetics.
There are some who make excuses for crimes against humanity like slavery, and cheer the racism of it; slaveowners loved this blackface. What's ur agenda? Do u feel blacks are sub-human? u call us 'animals'
Gosh, I guess that is why two of my children are black.... Dummy.
Color is just color. makeup is makeup. What is in the heart is in your heart. Of course one of the most famous blackface singers was Al Jolson, who was of Jewish heritage.
Honestly, some ideas are so stupid you have to be an intellectual to believe them.
Don - These aren't my ideas. I gave sources- u didn't. Yet u say that minstrel isn't racism because blacks & Al Johnson. And? He did propaganda that degraded blacks people. So did Jibbs is back & he did it in "Chain Hang Low". So do blacks who call each other the N word. Self-hatred is what it is & u know it.
Dogs chasing slaves, watermelons, the slave auction? It jokes about slaves escaping, the chain gangs - that's funny?
It's one of most offensive retelings of Stowe's novel yet.
Homosexuals use "queer" to take control over the word. Gay was complement, then derogatory, then the preferred term for a class. Nigger was from Niger, the river (Nigeria) with alluvial mud, once descriptive of where people came from in GHANA, when brought to slave in the gold mines. In Ghana the people are about the same hue as Nigeria. Agree it went from descriptive to derogatory, and in Oakland it is in some circles the preferred term. Now used as hammer on whites
Be the n word a preferred term by some or not, its meaning 1) doesn't change and 2) that doesn't make it any less deregatory; what it does do is prepetuate the stereotypes and serve as a form of self-destructive behaviour.
That people now use one of the most racist & demeaning term to refer to themselves doesn't make it better. Its history in the US is enough to make anyone cringe. What does that say about today's moral climate or education? its been negative for a long time.
Word meanings change over time which is why dictionaries need to be updated. Subcultures have their own codes, and that is what words are is sound codes. Skank used to be a kind of dancer, now is derogatory. Words change. Try to keep up.
Word manings do change over time. The Nig*** word started to refer directly to Africans as derragatory racial slur; since then it has not changed.
So now you say that it's not bad now because some black people use it? So it justifies whites using it too? If so, I disagree with you; that's a sad justification for racism.
The Nig*** word is wrong no mater who uses it. When blacks use it it becomes a form of self-hatred. What kind of person advocates using that word? And your not racist?
When some cultures use it it is derogatory, others use it as an honorific, or a term of affection. Who uses it that way? The mother of my children. She is a writer, and words are her 'thing'. language belongs to the people who use it. Condemn not rude language, rather the bad heart behind it.
The English nobility came from France by conquest, and so Anglosaxon words became rude and vulgar. Condemning the common people's language as rude and vulgar marks you too as a controlling busybody.
"others use it as an honorific, or a term of affection" Really? Your wife uses Nig*** as a way to honour your children?
Degrade your own children if you want, but that doesn't mean that this racial slur in any way honours black people. Maybe your delude yourself into believeing that, maybe your just another racist who says 'oh, but my best friend is black' or a real cynic who writes racist propaganda on an obviously racist cartoon.
This is beyond racism. Verbatim Pro-slavery propaganda. They use blacks in Mintstrel show setting to say that slavery 'wasn't bad at all'. Making a joke w/ seling families, chasing slaves w/ bloodhounds, people being whipped and direct references to "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the books in response to it denying the horrors of slavery is what this is. Read Douglass or Harriet Jacobs
If Germans made a story w/stereotype Jewish person whose purpose was "Holocaust wasn't that bad", would that be ok?
If you were not allowed to manipulate characters, then you would never have any movies, or any plays. Casting always makes use of the odd fact that the human face has genital structures on it, and they cast big noses, full lips based on what the character represents.
This cartoon attempts to introduce UTC to kids without the horrific aspects that are explored more fully in the book. You can argue that UTC should be kept away from kids until ready for the gruesome aspects. I don't agree
Wrong again, DonMeaker. We're not just talking about the exaggeration of human charactoristics for comedic purpouse, i.e. Elmer Fudd. In those days, black characters were exaggerated for dehumanization, since the dehumanization of blacks was considered comedy by most.
No, it isn't funny to mock or dehumanize people with speech impediments. Fudd's slightly exaggerated New England accent(not speech impediment) is not designed to debase new englanders the way black charactors are designed to debase blacks in general.
Odd thing: these characters are physiologically animals, who by being given human behavior become human. That is the opposite of having humans be given animal behavior to represent them as animals.
Blackface NEVER suggested that blacks were superior at anything. Rather said they were lazy, sub-human, incapable of caring for themselves & were "Uncle Toms" trying to imitate whites, but couldn't. Hence blackface was the 'White Man's Burden' argument on the stage, their justification for enslaving millions.
"Uncle Tom" here contradicts Stowe's novel, and says slavery was not bad & helped blacks; its part of 'Lost Cause Myth'.
They pretended to act "black"; blacks were not like this.
google Ferris university or Omnipelagos w/ blackface; you'll find documented history of blackface racsim.
ou can say 'just make up', but there's a tonne of scholarly work that disagrees.
20th century studies show this w/ negative perception of whites towards blacks whose exposre was from media: they had racist stereotypes even though they knew no blacks.
Brown vs BOE w/ research and dolls; blacks viewed the white dolls as superior. Why? The media stereotypes have an effect & used in case.
I agree on some points, I think that with charactures, you have to keep in mind the popular style of art. For example, the way ancient cultures depicted human forms throughout history (egyptians, ancient japan, or pre-renaissance europe) is really not anatomically correct at all, but artists might have persisted those styles because they get ingrained into their brains, and alter their perception of the human form. Another example is the way people who frequently draw anime sometimes...
Of course this is racist! This was in 1930. This was originally produced by Van Buren Co., and was one of the first talkie cartoons in the Aesop's Fables series. They also produced, in 1930. "Laundry Blues" which belittled the Jews showing big noses and "yiddish" speaking.
Both of these cartoons were banned from early 1950's tv as too racist and controversial....the same as the "Amos and Andy" series about a decade or more later.
Very true - and the Thre Little Pigs w/ th streotypical Jewish man - disgusting. I mean, ven Hitler iked to sing that song from the cartoon.
As for minstrel, DonMaker you trivialise the meaning of back face. It realy is saying that blacks are sub-human & that's why they dressed & talked th way they did w/ back face. That arument served as excuse to 'care' for the lesser people.
Cartoons that make excuses for that whether its whit, black Jewish is racism. U agree w/ that? This isnt for laughs
Actually, black face suggested that Blacks were superior at certain kinds of music, and people who were not black would have to "brand" themselves as black to be accepted in certain roles.
this is how they used to think in a way these toons are classics because its a reflection of our society and if you look now we have come a long way as a nation. on any given day Black Americans are no longer called Negros or Slaves. I wont deny racism is still around but compared to only 40 years ago we've come a long way (we have a Black President something unheard of 4 decades ago)
And on top of that. If these cartoons shed a poor light on coloreds, why is it automatically assumed that its doesn't shed a poor light on whites? They are the slave owners! They are the heartless bastards who treat another person in this way.
I don't understand why people consider this racist. First off, this kind of "racism" has to stem off of some sort of truth, otherwise it would make no sense. And when coloreds poke fun the white race, you know what the white people do? They laugh! Why? Because not only is it true, but its also funny. And if a colored person can make fun of a colored race, but a white man can't? THAT's racism!
ísn't that part based on a book or movie? i could have sworn i saw it before in a movie that was also about a slave and her baby that was on the run for her slavemaster on an icy lake.
i could be wrong though, it might just be a quincedence.
This is disgusting. And to think that's how white america viewed us during that time. Shit a lot view us the same now. They were programmed. If this came out in the 30's, that means the whites in their 70's grew up on this and i'm sure passed these values down to their children and then to grand children. Racism will never die. Such a shame.
You are taking this cartoon wayyyy to seriously. This cartoon makes fun of the slaves and the slaveowners too. What's soo bad? Afterall, the slaves outsmarted the mean ole slaveowner.
Its not that big of a deal, no offense to anyone, but has anyone realized that black comedians are ripping on white people? If that can fly then this should too.
yes it does. like it or not if blacks can make fun of whites...and they do, why is that not racist but if whites do then it is racist...thats a double standard
because whites have been surpessing other races for generations.even tho im a firm believer in that not all white ppl are racist, the ones that are stand out. white ppl have very ignorant views and share them vocaly more than others. i wish no racism ever happend cause its stupid. but u kno its more wrong 4 a white person to say racist coments than visa versa
@Jophie12 were white people kidnapped and enslaved for hundreds of years? I don't think so.. So I think that gives us the right to make jokes because they don't mean anything! Jokes like this relate to racism while black people were being stolen and shipped to america to be sold as slaves! Going back about four hundred years might I add. So there's a different meaning to the two race oriented jokes: One's offensive, the other is meaningless and therefore funny!
@SonySpArTaN144 I think that making fun of everyone is funny no matter what happened to them. I don't ,however, think that making fun of slavery is funny at all. Yet people still do it and no one seems to care that much.
@SonySpArTaN144 Actually yes. Arab slave traders sailed into the black sea and dragged off my Slavic ancestors for centuries before the Russian Tsardom became strong enough to expand and oppose the slave raiders. The same Muslim slave traders who sailed up and down the coast of East Africa and created a Slave trade that enslaved even more people and was even more brutal than the Atlantic Slave trade. Go read history and chill out, not all us white folk hate you, alot of us wanna be friends :D
@SonySpArTaN144 Who the hell says one joke is offensive and the other isn't?? YOU DO... If you want a double standard just say that... Don't try to put any retarded logic behind it.
@SonySpArTaN144 a million or more European Christians were enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780. when trans-Atlantic slaving was still in its infancy more white Christian slaves were taken to Barbary than African slaves to the Americas. One of the things that both the public and many scholars have tended to take as given is that slavery was always racial in nature, that only blacks have been slaves. But that is not true. Do your research.
@SonySpArTaN144 I hate how afro-americans always complain about how their ancestors were slaves.... Niggas you better thank God your grandparents were slaves in USA, cos now you can live the good American life, while your free cousins in Africa are dying of starvation....
Africans had african slaves, and sold africans to white and arab people.
Also arabs traded black slaves
Chinese traded chinese slaves
Europeans had European slaves (wtf do u nigga think the feudal age was?? (a peasant was considered the property of the landlord, had no rights, no land and could be killed at any time... same goes for Japanese peasants up till 1868
It's a racial stereotype that black people eat watermelons, fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. A lot of the old cartoons exploited stereotypes like these because they were considered "funny".
This cartoon was plainly trying to be progressive in its time, showing black slaves as heroes, slaveholders as villains, Uncle Tom ultimately killing Simon Legree rather than remaining servile. But as progressive as it tried to be, it was doomed anyway by the casual, unintentional prejudice of its makers, casually throwing in ignorant cliches like happy slaves and watermelon eating. They undermined their own message completely.
Indeed. I think similar attempts are made these days to combat racism while containing the same sort of inadvertent ramifications as well, not just in cartoons. We can applaud the attempt at combating racism obviously, but unfortunately the attempt reflects the true state of society these days. Racism is very strong and heavy in todays world. So it'll take more than just a side comment or cartoon to smash racism.
In the story of Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Tom was a personal servent to the white folks, not only that be he be friended them. So when some is called an uncle tom it's the same as slave to " white man" or they have "white" Characteristics.
Most blacks are brained washed and view the character "Uncle Tom" as a sellout to whites. However, the true story of Uncle Tom is that he was a long suffering Christian who never sold out, but stayed true to his beliefs or faith. He was asked to beat another slave, but he refused to do so. As a result he was beating. A lot of blacks allow white Americans to determine what is considered to be offensive and they accept it.
I agree - sorry I hit the thumbs down, it should be thumbs up - so your score is +2 higher than shown.
This is a musical version of the famous play/story 'Uncle Tom's Cabin." Whenther it's a good idea to be funny about this serious play is open to question (tho I say;yes) but everything in this is a parody of that - one of the greatest Abolitionist tracts of all time.
There is no 'unintentional prejudice' here - in fact, Uncle Tom is even more strongly against Legree than in the Book!
@ihopveggan i hate to breck it to u but they still are these days its called "human trafficing" and its people of every race its 2011 and somepeople still own other people
Racism goes hand in hand with ignorance. You can be a great person on the books but have ingnorance about another person's nationality and go with the hyped-up stereotypes that you are fed. I'm learning to love irregardless of race, creed or religion.
Basically there's too much ego in this country to go around, hell just look around and pick you up one, you might be somebody [more sitcom sarcasm]!
You just might be approved by peers of some type... hmm elitists?... mmm religious?... um left or right wingers (sports and politics)... we have to stand for something in this country don't we????
I mean, if we don't stand for something we will fall for anything, right?! I'm not out to bash America, but there is an abundance of false pride here!
okay now the banned merrie melodies had many racist undertones. but it was still somewhat funny. but this is just outright disrespect. wow. i am left speechless.
This whole cartoon was based on the hardcore sterotypes that white ppl feel and still have about blacks. Perpetuated from generation to generation. That's all
Of course you don't understand how your comment could possibly be naive, or you wouldn't have made it. I don't think I'm smart, what I think about myself that I am in a better positon than many and should be grateteful, and that my astrology says that I will have a successful future.
Naive dipshit "your country" made more than that. America made nuclear bombs which suck, guns that kill more than they save, and a big mess that makes people so unhappy that they turn to crime and drugs in america and abroad.
your a dumb ass. America wouldn't make the bombs or the guns if every one els would pay America to do it. the ppl involved with the process are just as guilty as the ppl who create the problem. and to advocate that America is the only country to ever have have racism is bull shit. America is a late world power meaning that morals and lessons developed slower. not to say being raciest is ok for back then but just saying, you cant blame America for all the worlds problems. your commentwaspointles
I never met an american I liked, even when I went to america (before I started thinking they were all morons. Can you blame me for not liking them? Send me some good ones and then tell me how they're not morons.
well i couldnt really explain to you who is a good american and whos not, your just summing up all americans in the same boat. like me or my grandma made the nuculer bomb. or we had slaves. or we have guns. you dont know me at all and your putting me in the same boat as a lot of bad ppl. thats like saying all germans are nazis or all middel eastern ppl are terrorists. you cant possible know or even judge every one in a country bassed on what some horrible ppl did.
The more americans I find as good to talk to and be around as the people I hang out with the more I'll like americans. Number of such people I've ever encountered: 0.
Also, don't insult me, That's what people do to people they want dead but can't kill cos of the law in the hope that they will crawl away and die. Where I live it's all we say to each other and it has no effect on us. Although, saying that america is just as guilty as those people who shoot the wrong people and drop nuclear bombs was a good one, I must say.
Hey TechTime, an American here. I have nothing bad to say about you as a person, just your generalization. Hey not all Americans are idiots, just most of them. So what if you do not find Americans your type of people, atleast you can identify with others inside your country.
I'm living in America and I CAN'T find a decent American inside this very country that I can relate to beside intellectuals. I talk to people that can think outside of TV sitcom sarcasm and "nuke or don't nuke" politics.
...and f*ck this video! The day I do back flips while my pals are eating watermelons and fried chicken will never come. Not that those aren't delectable meals. Anyone care to share their opinions on racism? It's always going to exist, why worry about it [sitcom sarcasm].
well this is proof to the black americans this is what they used 2 think of you not 2 long ago what are you going 2 do bout it are you goin to continue 2 fall into these stereotypes or are we going 2 rise above the means.
they were pickin cotton.. lmao... they are coming from africa on boat and then working in cotton field.. lmao.. good place for them. thats why we used coloreds in cotton fields less likely to get sun burned lmao
This is a pretty bad rip off of Steam boat willie with its Mickey Mouse lookalike and the dancing felix. The date is almost certainly 1929 or 1930 due to its very early animation style, and the fact its pretty archaic talk a toon technology
I wouldn't toatally rule out Disney/Iwerks(Laff-O-Gram), but more than likely early Ising or possibly VanBeuren, great example of lively animation, if you can widen your horizons and look beyond the PC factors which folks love to fight over.
Orangutans remind me of my grandfather. He was Dutch and Choktaw. It isn't a slam, its just a fact. I'm white, and life is hard being neutral and not racist. We teach in schools the history of the whites and how they exploited the blacks and indians and the terrible conditions they suffered. ANY person with a conscience would feel shame for their own race. We deal with it and try to BE friends. But it always seems to come to point where race is mentioned and then the line is drawn.
Racist? Yes, it's racist. It sympathetically portrays the misery of slavery. A small child learned from this cartoon that slavery was a rotten system that broke up families and dehumanized people as mere chattel property.
thats only because its metaphoric (such as the dancing and watermelon thingy , actually the part where it said "slave's for sale", and the auction block gave it away.
Its nothing to cry about its something I get pissed about, to see how much shit they showed on tv let alone cartoons that secretly taught childeren those evil ways.
Hold up dude dont say stupid shit like that. The piont and motherfuckin case is that CHILDREN no matter what racial background they come from where piosoned with these discreet and mostly BLUNT racial cartoons. They were made to appeal to children and who knows what effect they had on them. Now tell me, what the fuck does that have to with a certain group of people havbing money to afford a television set or not???
thats the point, u just don't understand being a white. u never experienced it so u wouldn't kno. Associating a black man and a monkey isn't offensive is it ? its just fun.
not when i'm addressing this person. He obviously has not felt pain from abuse simply because he has more melanin in his skin. how can a white person possibly feel the hurt racial abuse does to a person, when racism is 99% of the time white on brown skinned, rather than brown on white skinned.
are you serious ive got more of that then your whining about, ive been hit by cars, jumped, my house got robbed, people always want to fight me and do you want to know why because IM WHITE, so how about you getg off that "feel sad for me" shit
whatever. there's almost no open racism towards non-white anymore. then, how many times do you hear the words "white boy" and "cracker" by non-whites, especially blacks? yes, a lot. you just subconsciously think you can't be racist towards whites. wrong.

Some of Van Beuren's "Aesop's Sound Fables" from 1929 through '33 were reissued as part of Official's "Jungle Jinks" series. This was originally released as "Dixie Days" in March 1930, co-directed by John Foster & Mannie Davis, with "synchronized" music by Gene Rodemich.

svaughn4 2 years ago
Don - you've made numerous negative statments, referring to these characters as 'animals' even though they "represent" black people in jungle. There is no debate that blackface is racist. R you?
To claim this isn't racism is 1) incredible ignorance or 2) extreme hatred or 3) apologetics.
There are some who make excuses for crimes against humanity like slavery, and cheer the racism of it; slaveowners loved this blackface. What's ur agenda? Do u feel blacks are sub-human? u call us 'animals'
EBanonymous 2 years ago
Gosh, I guess that is why two of my children are black.... Dummy.
Color is just color. makeup is makeup. What is in the heart is in your heart. Of course one of the most famous blackface singers was Al Jolson, who was of Jewish heritage.
Honestly, some ideas are so stupid you have to be an intellectual to believe them.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
So who is the hippopatamus? Is she animal like? Your comments are self contradicting.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
Don - These aren't my ideas. I gave sources- u didn't. Yet u say that minstrel isn't racism because blacks & Al Johnson. And? He did propaganda that degraded blacks people. So did Jibbs is back & he did it in "Chain Hang Low". So do blacks who call each other the N word. Self-hatred is what it is & u know it.
Dogs chasing slaves, watermelons, the slave auction? It jokes about slaves escaping, the chain gangs - that's funny?
It's one of most offensive retelings of Stowe's novel yet.
EBanonymous 2 years ago
Jolson, not Johnson.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
yes my typo.
EBanonymous 2 years ago
Word meanings change over time which is why dictionaries need to be updated. Subcultures have their own codes, and that is what words are is sound codes. Skank used to be a kind of dancer, now is derogatory. Words change. Try to keep up.
DonMeaker 2 years ago 2
Word manings do change over time. The Nig*** word started to refer directly to Africans as derragatory racial slur; since then it has not changed.
So now you say that it's not bad now because some black people use it? So it justifies whites using it too? If so, I disagree with you; that's a sad justification for racism.
The Nig*** word is wrong no mater who uses it. When blacks use it it becomes a form of self-hatred. What kind of person advocates using that word? And your not racist?
EBanonymous 2 years ago 2
When some cultures use it it is derogatory, others use it as an honorific, or a term of affection. Who uses it that way? The mother of my children. She is a writer, and words are her 'thing'. language belongs to the people who use it. Condemn not rude language, rather the bad heart behind it.
The English nobility came from France by conquest, and so Anglosaxon words became rude and vulgar. Condemning the common people's language as rude and vulgar marks you too as a controlling busybody.
DonMeaker 2 years ago 2
"others use it as an honorific, or a term of affection" Really? Your wife uses Nig*** as a way to honour your children?
Degrade your own children if you want, but that doesn't mean that this racial slur in any way honours black people. Maybe your delude yourself into believeing that, maybe your just another racist who says 'oh, but my best friend is black' or a real cynic who writes racist propaganda on an obviously racist cartoon.
EBanonymous 2 years ago 2
I do not degrade my children. That is the point. You are not part of my family, so you don't understand. Too bad for you.
Again, if it is racist to you, it says something about you. Don't apply your insecurity to me. It doesn't apply.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
You are the one who claims "nigger" is not racist. You make an elaborate argument for it.
You openly admit to calling your children by this term. Then you continue to say 1) it's not racist and 2) it's doesn't degrade people.
The "Nigger" word has been one of the most racist & degrading terms in history for over a hundred years. Now YOU claim it's "an honorific".
What dictionary, scholarly work or respected source says "nigger" honours black people?
You've sunk to a new low.
EBanonymous 2 years ago 2
I do not use the term as an honorific. My ex wife does, on occasion.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
This is beyond racism. Verbatim Pro-slavery propaganda. They use blacks in Mintstrel show setting to say that slavery 'wasn't bad at all'. Making a joke w/ seling families, chasing slaves w/ bloodhounds, people being whipped and direct references to "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the books in response to it denying the horrors of slavery is what this is. Read Douglass or Harriet Jacobs
If Germans made a story w/stereotype Jewish person whose purpose was "Holocaust wasn't that bad", would that be ok?
EBanonymous 2 years ago
Actually this references Uncle Tom's Cabin one of the most important anti-slavery books of all time. And the evil Simon Le Gree gets his in the end.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
That isn't the point, DonMeaker. It is never acceptable to make a characature of one's ethnicity and it should be called on.
funkbrother2I6 2 years ago
If you were not allowed to manipulate characters, then you would never have any movies, or any plays. Casting always makes use of the odd fact that the human face has genital structures on it, and they cast big noses, full lips based on what the character represents.
This cartoon attempts to introduce UTC to kids without the horrific aspects that are explored more fully in the book. You can argue that UTC should be kept away from kids until ready for the gruesome aspects. I don't agree
DonMeaker 2 years ago
Wrong again, DonMeaker. We're not just talking about the exaggeration of human charactoristics for comedic purpouse, i.e. Elmer Fudd. In those days, black characters were exaggerated for dehumanization, since the dehumanization of blacks was considered comedy by most.
funkbrother2I6 2 years ago
So you think it is funny to mock and dehumanize people with speech impediments?
DonMeaker 2 years ago
No, it isn't funny to mock or dehumanize people with speech impediments. Fudd's slightly exaggerated New England accent(not speech impediment) is not designed to debase new englanders the way black charactors are designed to debase blacks in general.
funkbrother2I6 2 years ago
Oh, so it is ok when you do it to "white people". Now I understand completely.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
You understand that you have to resort to debating with strawmen after getting schooled.
funkbrother2I6 2 years ago
No, you resort to the "that'sdifferent" like liberals always do when they are shown their bias and prejudice.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
Odd thing: these characters are physiologically animals, who by being given human behavior become human. That is the opposite of having humans be given animal behavior to represent them as animals.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
Blackface NEVER suggested that blacks were superior at anything. Rather said they were lazy, sub-human, incapable of caring for themselves & were "Uncle Toms" trying to imitate whites, but couldn't. Hence blackface was the 'White Man's Burden' argument on the stage, their justification for enslaving millions.
"Uncle Tom" here contradicts Stowe's novel, and says slavery was not bad & helped blacks; its part of 'Lost Cause Myth'.
They pretended to act "black"; blacks were not like this.
EBanonymous 2 years ago
What a lot of meanings you put into makeup. Perhaps you have racial issues...
DonMeaker 2 years ago
google Ferris university or Omnipelagos w/ blackface; you'll find documented history of blackface racsim.
ou can say 'just make up', but there's a tonne of scholarly work that disagrees.
EBanonymous 2 years ago
I agree on some points, I think that with charactures, you have to keep in mind the popular style of art. For example, the way ancient cultures depicted human forms throughout history (egyptians, ancient japan, or pre-renaissance europe) is really not anatomically correct at all, but artists might have persisted those styles because they get ingrained into their brains, and alter their perception of the human form. Another example is the way people who frequently draw anime sometimes...
Clearie552 2 years ago
Of course this is racist! This was in 1930. This was originally produced by Van Buren Co., and was one of the first talkie cartoons in the Aesop's Fables series. They also produced, in 1930. "Laundry Blues" which belittled the Jews showing big noses and "yiddish" speaking.
Both of these cartoons were banned from early 1950's tv as too racist and controversial....the same as the "Amos and Andy" series about a decade or more later.
jimmygale 2 years ago
Very true - and the Thre Little Pigs w/ th streotypical Jewish man - disgusting. I mean, ven Hitler iked to sing that song from the cartoon.
As for minstrel, DonMaker you trivialise the meaning of back face. It realy is saying that blacks are sub-human & that's why they dressed & talked th way they did w/ back face. That arument served as excuse to 'care' for the lesser people.
Cartoons that make excuses for that whether its whit, black Jewish is racism. U agree w/ that? This isnt for laughs
EBanonymous 2 years ago
Actually, black face suggested that Blacks were superior at certain kinds of music, and people who were not black would have to "brand" themselves as black to be accepted in certain roles.
DonMeaker 2 years ago
this is how they used to think in a way these toons are classics because its a reflection of our society and if you look now we have come a long way as a nation. on any given day Black Americans are no longer called Negros or Slaves. I wont deny racism is still around but compared to only 40 years ago we've come a long way (we have a Black President something unheard of 4 decades ago)
rebel4thecolorbrown 2 years ago
And on top of that. If these cartoons shed a poor light on coloreds, why is it automatically assumed that its doesn't shed a poor light on whites? They are the slave owners! They are the heartless bastards who treat another person in this way.
MoulonStooge 2 years ago
I don't understand why people consider this racist. First off, this kind of "racism" has to stem off of some sort of truth, otherwise it would make no sense. And when coloreds poke fun the white race, you know what the white people do? They laugh! Why? Because not only is it true, but its also funny. And if a colored person can make fun of a colored race, but a white man can't? THAT's racism!

The2ndKrezzz3 2 years ago
@Jophie12 were white people kidnapped and enslaved for hundreds of years? I don't think so.. So I think that gives us the right to make jokes because they don't mean anything! Jokes like this relate to racism while black people were being stolen and shipped to america to be sold as slaves! Going back about four hundred years might I add. So there's a different meaning to the two race oriented jokes: One's offensive, the other is meaningless and therefore funny!

They undermined their own message completely.
biryanifan 3 years ago 4

So when some is called an uncle tom it's the same as slave to " white man" or they have "white" Characteristics.
ready2fly22 3 years ago 3
Most blacks are brained washed and view the character "Uncle Tom" as a sellout to whites. However, the true story of Uncle Tom is that he was a long suffering Christian who never sold out, but stayed true to his beliefs or faith. He was asked to beat another slave, but he refused to do so. As a result he was beating. A lot of blacks allow white Americans to determine what is considered to be offensive and they accept it.
Bluedon1911 3 years ago 19
I agree - sorry I hit the thumbs down, it should be thumbs up - so your score is +2 higher than shown.
This is a musical version of the famous play/story 'Uncle Tom's Cabin." Whenther it's a good idea to be funny about this serious play is open to question (tho I say;yes) but everything in this is a parody of that - one of the greatest Abolitionist tracts of all time.
There is no 'unintentional prejudice' here - in fact, Uncle Tom is even more strongly against Legree than in the Book!

"being a white"?.. isnt that just being racist yourself sir?
ds8181 4 years ago
not when i'm addressing this person. He obviously has not felt pain from abuse simply because he has more melanin in his skin. how can a white person possibly feel the hurt racial abuse does to a person, when racism is 99% of the time white on brown skinned, rather than brown on white skinned.

are you serious ive got more of that then your whining about, ive been hit by cars, jumped, my house got robbed, people always want to fight me and do you want to know why because IM WHITE, so how about you getg off that "feel sad for me" shit

bullshit more to blacks then whites. racism happens more to whies now because its more socially acceptable
SANPEDROx18 4 years ago
whatever. there's almost no open racism towards non-white anymore. then, how many times do you hear the words "white boy" and "cracker" by non-whites, especially blacks? yes, a lot. you just subconsciously think you can't be racist towards whites. wrong.
