Thank you for posting, MattArchives. I've always loved these delightful Löwenbräu commercials, and I don't even drink. And Clevinger67, I also recognize Robert "Sergeant Getraer" Pine.
Lowenbrau is German for the lion's brew -- Miller had the U.S. rights to the beer (c. 1977-2002) before the current Anheuser-Busch InBev bought them in 2003.
@crazyromanian1 Didn't know that Rawls hailed from Chicago. A bit of trivia: My aunt's boyfriend in the 1970s was a drummer, and knew Rawls. In fact, it was Rawls that encouraged him to relocate to L.A., with promises of finding him work.
@chewybunz Yes, Rawls was from Southside Chi-town, which is one of my favorite cities, Great restaurant town.. Sounds like Lou was a pretty decent guy. Sinatra summed it up when he said "Rawls has the classiest singing and smoothest chops in the singing game". I'm gonna split and listen to some Rawls right now.
I'm sitting here, needing to finish a work project, but I'm wishing I was hoisting a few and chowing down with Nolan and the gang, getting ready to go, overdressed, to a game.
God damn it........it's NOT pronounced "LOW-EN-BROW". "au" in German is pronounced as "ow", but the "a" with the two little dots above it (an umlaut) together with a "u" is pronounced "oy". And since Germans pronounce the letter "w" as we English speakers pronounce the letter "v", Löwenbräu is pronounced "LOOV-EN-BROY".
@Thelookoutslookout Of course, I've always been amused that the waiter doesn't ask him how he wants his steak cooked, or whether he wants soup or salad, or french fries or baked potato. I guess they needed a longer commercial.
@hankgillette Of course not -- its obvious the man's a philistine and only wants the "biggest" steak. They could serve him a saddle and he'd be happy!
I recognize 2 of the actors - one of the speaking guys is, I believe the director of "Ghostbusters". The second actor making his order is the Captain on the tv show "CHiPS".
I heard this song as a radio jingle every day on AM radio before my dad went to work in the mornings. Memories. I never drank beer, so it appears I am impervious to advertising...
26862 - Absolutely!!! This fabulous (now sadly literally 'fabulous') Munich beer, before the seventies was nectar indeed. Soft, heavy and with a fantastically dry exotic-wood like taste, (very crude that, but in hope I am in the general ball park), this wonderful product has been sold out, not only down the river, but out of all existence by those such as Judas could only drool at. What is served up now is quite simply shit by comparison. Yep - don't tell me - it's pieces of silver again. Yawn.
@nycdweller that was driving me CRAZY. thank you. I was going...Hill Street Blues?...NO...Greatest American Hero?....NO...Six Million Dollar Man...NO...
Let's see what's changed in 30 some odd years. Four or five guys having time to get together for dinner & a ball game wouldn't be too realistic in today's world of dual-income families. And here they do it often enough to know the waiter by name. The interwebs have made getting tickets to things easier. And if a middle aged guy ordered the restaurant's biggest steak, they would probably have to display a caption warning about cholesterol and all that.
Here's to good friends, tonight is kind of special, the beer will pour, must say something more somehow, so tonight, tonight .... Let it be Lowenbrau. It's been so long, gee, I'm glad to see ya, Raise your glass, here's to health
and happiness, So tonight, tonight .... Let it be all the best.
This commercial reminds me of a place that USED TO BE a popular night spot for the more aristocratic crowd (of which I was not a part) in my hometown back in the 70s when I was growing up.
Today my friends & I will still sing this to each other at the bar, although Lowenbrau is very hard to come by these days. I'm curious, do you have the original Arthur Prysock song "Here's To Good Friends" available? I have it on vinyl and I'd love to see it on YouTube. Anyway, Thanks for the Memories!
Nice. Let me know if someone posts the one where they are sitting on the beach.
