  • That love tap? Geez, that was nothing.

  • Am I missing something I don't think it was that bad

  • @Keyo717 in roller derby as it's played today (not the staged game from the 70s but the actual sport) any hitting above the shoulder is strictly forbidden. Even if accidental and without consequences, the player gets a "major" penalty (that is more severe than a minor). She knows this very well, yet she clearly intentionally hits someone to the head with her wrist-guard. That's the context that makes that this is pretty crazy.

  • Love the fact for a few seconds everyone kinda stops skating and looks around like "what do we do?!" and then they just carry the jam on as if nothing happened!

  • Deranged brought a little of it on herself, she ran into her as well, and skated low while doing it.

  • I've been hit in the face so many times playing (I've even got my nose broken from a helmet to the face), I can't even count but I don't throw a hissy fit like a baby. I suck it up and move on. Bad time to throw a hissy fit, it was the championships. Her team could have gotten further in the tournament if she was able to play, she is one of the best players on Rocky mountain. Hope it was worth it.

  • wow, buncha self-righteous hall monitors around these parts. she reacted in the heat of the moment. it happens, and she took her expulsion. you'd kick her off the league? be real, folks. there are actions and consequences and the penalty was served. life goes on.

  • she should never play derby again, simple as that. shes intentionally trying to hurt someone over a block she didnt agree with, its derby hon, a real derby girl would of shot passed her and shown her up that way instead of punching someone. id be embarrassed to take her back on my team if she was on my league

  • is there anymore footage of this? specifically more of what happened after the jam (the expulsion)

  • @kornable There wasn't anything to see. She left the play area.

  • @kornable There wasn't anything to see. She left the play area. The expulsion happens here in this video.

  • boooring

  • Honestly, derby has extensive and specific rules on the types of hits/blocks/maneuvers that can be done, with penalties attached to illegal moves, and no room for outright fighting. To imply that roller derby is essentially a brawl on wheels is downright insulting. If you've been watching a few of the outrageous clips of derby girls duking it out, then you really need to educate yourself on how the majority of the teams play the sport.

  • @Dallasdeckard--do you even know what you are talking about? The derby resurgence began as a grassroots, amateur, community-driven event, and it continues to be based on a diy spirit and community support...but it is definitely not moving in the direction of wrestling! The WFTDA leagues, and those outside of WFTDA as well, are very organized and extremely athletic teams, with players coming from roller hockey, speed skating, figure skating, etc. Your comments indicate you know little about derby

  • This is Gross Misconduct (Expulsion) not a major misconduct-6.13.8 applies "An indiscretion so serious that it justifies the instant expulsion of a skater."

A-C does not spend a minute in the box (7.5.4)--but a teammate in the jam will serve 1 min in box.

Penalties that could apply and support the expulsion: 6.15.4 Fighting "Intentional, negligent or reckless contact above the shoulders"

    6.15.5 Punching another skater

  • @eamenn, I believe dripnote is saying that Angie-Christ, the skater who was punched, should have also gotten a penalty for the hit to the head. I don't think anybody is debating whether or not DeRanged (the puncher) should have been expelled or not - that's cut and dried.

  • @justice - Yep.

  • @justicefeelgood Has to have been a major high block by Angie-Christ!

  • @seanrainer - From the WFTDA rules regarding Misconduct Majors:

6.13.5 Any block with initial contact landing above the shoulders [is a misconduct major penalty.]

Angie should have spent a minute in the box.

    Read the rules.

  • Wow, as a mom whose daughter recently began skating with a roller derby group, I find this kind of behavior VERY disturbing. I'm also an RN, which gives me a heightened awareness of how a hit like this could leave a lasting injury. Please do better than this.

  • @fatarae This is VERY rare. The only reason this video is of interest is because its the first time in a WFTDA regional or national tournament this has ever happened. None of the other videos - tie games, leg whips, big jams - have any firsts in them.

  • bitchesbruzse: Thanks for responding to my comment. I am glad to hear from you that this is a rare occurrence. I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the young women my daughter skates with and have been impressed by the camaraderie, good sportswomanship and great fun had by all.

  • @bitchesbruze

I'm a Roller Derby Referee. You know - it IS rare but I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. We tend to put women on a pedestal but men do not have the market cornered on anger. What's exhibited here is a natural instinct. The opposing blocker blocked to the head which should have been a major. They're both wearing helmets. It was the wrong thing to do but again - it's in the heat of the moment.

  • @ksam4000 their is no excuse for this, and the other girls block was only to the head because she was bending down so low, d ranged would never play for our leage again after doing that

  • @bitchesbruze Some NSO's will not tolerate language too. It's a strict sport. The rules do state vulgar language will result in expulsion.

  • @xocute666 vulgar language directed toward a referee or NSO is not allowed. Vulgar language that is not excessive toward opponents is allowed . Therefore, the rules recognize that some vulgar language will and may occur. NSOs and officials need not make up any new rules. There are plenty already. No official, skating or otherwise, should be sworn at. But at the same time, officials need to recognize when swearing is not AT them and allow the game to happen. PS - my name is not vulgar to me.

  • Thanks for your response. You may be right. I guess I just want it to be safe. I don't want my lovely daughter to get hurt.

  • It's not leaning towards wrestling. Roller derby has consistently been moving away from that direction. Read the rules.

The team that won this tournament had a 13 time world champion speed skater skating on it (Julie Brandt-Glass AKA Atomatrix). And other skaters who speed skated and played rink hockey at a national level.

Going in the direction you suggest it might is what destroyed derby in the 70s and 80s. Today's skaters are very aware of that, and don't want to go down that road.

  • @Dallasdeckard completely wrong, it will never turn into the crap game that was played in the 70's, at least not outside the USA

  • WRONG. The fans booed her.

It's not skating in a circle. For one, the track is an oval, not a circle. A punch gets a skater expelled from the bout. This particular one had her suspended from the next bout in the tournament as well. She may have cost her team that game by doing this.

Skaters do get injured, generally those would be ankles (first season falls done badly) and ACL injuries.

  • Good point.

  • Which is a nickname that comes from taking falls or legal hits or pushes.

To suggest that this something that the players advocate when it is clearly not (and the fact that it doesn't seem like you are involved in the game) is a very rude and horrible accusation.

  • @Dallasdeckard - Actually, my skater name is taken from the 1969 Miles Davis album "Bitches Brew." A lot of people miss the music reference of my name.

I've been playing this sport since the summer of 2007. I've been hurt - but never from punches. I've had a fractured rib, torn MCL/meniscus (required surgery), and recently a slightly torn ACL along with many bruises, and scrapes.

Wouldn't give it up for the world! More people call me beautiful today than before I played derby.

  • what kind of game is this???

  • From the description, you would think that DeRanged was retaliating after a dirty hit. The video makes it pretty clear that Angie-Christ didn't do anything to deserve that hit.

The refs did the right thing.

Also, AC got hit on the neck, not the helmet, and she had lasting effects.

  • Angie-Christ is just in the wrong place at the wrong time, what you dont see in this video is what happens behind DeRanged. As Angie-Christ is pushed towards DeRanged, the player behind DeRanged gos off balance and catchs her self by planting her elbow in DeRanged back forcing DeRanged forward into Angie-Christs shoulder face first. Thats got to hurt like hell, I doubt most people would to react well to that kind of pain. Bad reaction yes. DeRanged suspended, pays the price.

  • kornable, she was expelled from this game and suspended from her next game.

  • I'm glad to hear that. I hold to the notion that derby is an actual sport played by athletes. Acting out like she did is dangerous and unacceptable.

  • Nice job -- glad you caught this. I was there, but I didn't see it happen. The scream in the slow motion replay is haunting.

  • I agree with the spider. It looks to me like both Texas skaters were lining up for a hit and in the process the outside Texas skater side swiped The Angie-Christ, sending her into DeRanged. It's a good thing Angie didn't turn around to do a little damage control. That punch would have been to the face.

Either way, I hope DeRanged gets a chance to really study this video and see the extremity of her error. Then again, maybe she was living out her Drew Barrymore fantasties. ;)

  • should have given her the teapot of expulsion

  • Great job capturing some good action!

  • In AC's defense, she was bumped from the outside by her own player, and more than likely, didn't intend to hit with that shoulder. It's not like she could turn around and say..."oops, sorry"

But even if she did mean it... that's no reason to throw a rabbit punch to the someones neck.

  • I completely agree. Referees WILL miss illegal hits and it was clearly NOT intentional on AC's part. There is never an excuse to haul off and punch someone. I don't think the other skater hits AC though. I think they both hit D, but it doesn't really matter. In the stands, people had no idea why D just hauled off an hit AC - at least in the stands around me. I didn't see it happen at all because I was watching a tiny video screen, but I knew I'd caught it.

  • DAMN!!!! That is ridiculous!!!!
