Thumbs up if u came here because Sun Ra was a man who really cared about people and was selfless and sincere. There aren't many people like him these days.
When he came out like Blacks and Whites alike could not take it or understand where in the hell this guy was coming from? He was not coming from anywhere he was trying to take people to where he was going. John Coltrane was heavily influenced by Sun Ra, no one was deeper than Sun Ra and no one was so futuristic in their approach. Also his music represent colors not just cosmos, vibrations and illusions - I still have a hard time processing his music.
he is demonstrating the chaos of the cosmos.... This music is a good representation of the present day world here on earth.... IT LOOKS AND SOUNDS JUST LIKE THIS>>>watch the news, walk outside and you will feel chaos
I am a jazz fan and musician and I can appreciate some very out stuff (pharoah sanders, jackie mclean) but things like this really is not jazz, or worth listening too... lol
sorry, I have to respond...this is Sun Ra at his wildest, but he was a lot more than that...he led an orchestra for about 60 years and composed some of the most amazing music ever...he's more like Ellington than Sly Stone...although you put those two together and you get something closer to Ra...watch more clips of his...he's truly amazing...
I'd really like someone to explain this too me.. im not judging and am a fairly musical person but i dont get this at all? Isnt he just doing whatever on the keyboard? how is this enjoyable unless your on some strong drug trip?
@saywhatiwantfool He knew he was born with our standards of reality. His point was that the spirit is like little drops of water. It is never born nor does it die. it is endless, eternal. It's letting go of your ego/identity, who you THINK you are.
I respond to a stupid statement with a stupid statement...you're a fucking idiot. You obviously have no knowledge of music, and no understanding of who Sun Ra is.
@awortheyjr If you're saying your statement is stupid, why should I care about it? Obviously, you could not tell I wasn't being serious. I've been a fan of Sun Ra and other noise musicians for a while.
I heard this same jam yesterday. I was at a guitar center and some mother was not watching her 5 year old as well as she should have and he walked into the synth room and started playing.
Gee... silly me! And I thought the kid was just being a kid and hitting a bunch of keys like only a child would do.
@ppc1989ark I'm sure he was very devoted, and honestly I have read a little about him. by all accounts he was a very moral person, a devout Christian.
however, I don't see any talent here, and having an education means little... I've worked with lots of people with college educations, some were bright, some were idiots.
@automap it really is a matter of taste, I suppose. for me, when I compair him to other fusion artists of the time, like Sly Stone, there is a major lack of talent here.
@3333kdawg this video really just captures one of his musical freakouts that would happen at times on several occasions during any given show. Give a listen to more of his stuff to get a better idea. Its a 1:24 video of a possibly 5 minute solo in a song that may go on for 12 minutes.
@3333kdawg it does take little skill, and it is pseudo intellectual. Now, there are people who post on here that Ra's old albums sell for hundreds of dollars on Amazon. It's not true, I have searched there after being told this and never found an album for over $5!
I am a music lover of most all genres, I can find lots of none commercial/mainstream stuff on CD simply because there is a demand for it... there simply is no such demand for Ra's stuff. It's garbage!
@infodisinfo Garbage is a big word for a person who knows very little about Jazz such as yourself. Try listen to any of Sun Ra's early albums and come back to post your opinions.
As for Sun Ra's old albums, the fact that the latest pop starlet can sell millions while a classical master can only muster a few thousand should give you an indication of how demand correlates to talent.
@mlredr lol...you're real funny ASSuming so much about a person by a little post. here's what I KNOW about you: you're a jackass that reaches rash conclusions based on almost no information. you should run for congress, you'd do well.
classical music, I'm a big fan of it, opera, too. much can be found on CD at any music store... where's Ra's? zero demand means no one will invest in the prints to sell. Ra had no impact on music, he played mostly at community colleges and almost never sold out!
@infodisinfo Wow bro, saying that Sun Ra has had no impact on music is a pretty ignorant statement. That man was one of the most groundbreaking jazz musicians ever. He was one of the first jazz musicians to explore free jazz and make use of electronic instruments. His influence is seen in modern jazz today and in other musicians like MC5. There are also plenty of Sun Ra records at music stores, I watched my friend buy one yesterday. Don't talk shit about something you know nothing about.
@raymondHooper yeah, OK... and the first caveman to club a hollow log was a ground breaker in free style drumming. you said a friend bought a record... why not a CD? I've never seen a Sun Ra CD... do they exsist?
@gkozak666 Does your life consist of replying to worthless user comments with pretentious rants? Does this make you feel more intelligent about yourself? Jesus Christ, if you truly got it you would realize you really just shouldn't give a fuck.
ahh I fell in love with his music at an early age, im 21 now and i still dig it! I would have loved to see the Sun God come play in my hometown Mexico City oh man he should've came and visited our pyramid of the sun and played his thoughts.........
@NewYork2Chicago sun ra was a great person, lovely human being and just as good and innovative player. he is an asset to his african roots and a gift to this otherwise very boring world. i would definately have a drink and a laugh with him. i love all the african jazz people. cant beat them! best ever!
@gkozak666 If you watch a joyful noise, you will see that what seems to be an ambiguous mess of philosophies are actually EQUATIONS, real EQUATIONS, WORD EQUATIONS. And the world is made of math equations (physics). And like I've said previously, read about the String Theory and then listen to Sun Ra's equations, you might get a surprise as to what he's talking about.
@gkozak666 You know, I have realized that spiritual people like Sun Ra can do more for this planet than most people, especially politicians. People like Ram Dass, people who figured out what life is all about. What is it all about? Sincerity, and most importantly as Sun Ra says, knowing the "unknown." "The unknown is most profitable to humanity."
