It was a 3 speed auto, 1.6L. The base model without a front sway bar. It takes a bit to get it up to speed, but once there, is is predictable, balanced and well behaved in the turns, so you can carry a lot of speed if you smoothly shift the weight. Around a track with fast sweeping turns like Lime Rock, you get quite quick this way. Grippy tires help a lot. Sport brake pads that can take high temperatures are also a good idea if you brake hard. Light cars are always fun, even with lower hp.
@Dosalt This was to learn how to control a car at speed on a racetrack. It is called 'high performance driving event' and is a first step towards road course racing. If you want to learn more, check out the get-into-racing guide at goaheadtakethewheel . com - it's free :).
Depends on the track - different tracks charge SCDA different rental fees. Lime Rock is pricy at 345/day , others (e.g. New Hampshire, New Jersey) are way cheaper, and there are discounts if you attend more than one day.
Google 'Sports Car Driving Association' - their 2010 schedule is up, not sure if prices are listed yet. It is awesome fun and they have very good instructors. You should come! If you do, tell them the guy with the Corolla sent you :). See you on the track next season!
