I think he was trying to make a statement about how language is arbitrary and that music is the real universal language. You have to admit that this song makes you feel real emotion even though you don't understand the words, just like when you hear any song in a language you don't know.

don't get me wrong, i love language and poetry. i study literature. however, musically the voice is also an instrument. some of my favorite parts of songs are just vocal sounds, for example the emotional sort of wail in Hey Jupiter by Tori Amos.
