  • i found this from a site

The battalion, which was often used as a spearhead attacking unit, earned a fierce fighting reputation and the respect of German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel.

"The Germans knew we came to fight, and when our men did their haka there was no humbug about it - but that's war for you," said Mr Paraone. "Rommel reckoned if he had 10,000 Maori he would have conquered the world."

  • One person disliked it because his whitey

  • MAORI...YEAHHH...LOL...but aye, personally i feel im a MAORI 1st kiwi second,r u a KiWi??? Oh im maori cos how many nationalitys refer them selves as KIWI???so yeah..river maori @that,Ko Au Te AWA Ko Te AWA Ko Au...ne way how can u click dislike on images of a contingint of men that helped fight for our freedom, with a mean as waiata as well...sad dude..

  • @2012jakjones YES AWATERE CAME HOME TO SOME DUTCH FULLA IN HIS WAHINE ,THERE WAS NO SERVICES FOR THE RETURNED MAORI TO DEAL WITH PRESSURES ,THE PAKEHA COULD NOT LET A MAORI OUT DO HIM IN WAR

  • @zhyarnkatie Hey thats life....50 % of that action was from his Missus. Some Maori need to get up to speed....the worlds worse now than then

  • I hate white kiwis who put down Maori's when we fought for your homeland in the Beor War, World War1 & World War 2! You people would never fight for us.. Our people died for you guys. And still got nothing for it

  • @MrSicc274 they were better soldiers than pakeha

  • He tohu whakamaumahara ki a koutou e koro ma. Kei te tihaehae te ngakau te kitenga atu i tenei kiriata, me nga roimata e ringihia nei. I tae atu koutou ki te pae o te pakanga, a i reira i kite ai nga mahi tukino, i puta mai i te muranga o te ahi. No reira moe mai i roto i nga ringa mahana o te Atua. Mana koutou hei manaaki hei tiaki. Kua tau te rangimarie ki runga i a koutou. Koi warewaretia.

  • ANZAC pride right here guys fighting for the mother land im maori and proud off every drop of blood in me white or brown, lest we forget !!!

  • @2012jakjones u need to get yr facts right there are Maori of full blood still left in Nga Puhi yr obviously not cultural enough to knw that..

  • @kehua007 MAORI CAN BE KIWI OR WHO EVER THEY WANT,ITS ABOUT AFFLIATION ,NOT ABOUT COLOUR ITS ABOUT BLOOD

  • glory to all the soldiers that fought and died for the freedom of the world.

damn the american and soviet government for starting the cold war.

  • The 28th are New Zealanders and by ell they could fight

    God Bless the 28th

    Honour & Respect

    1RNZIR

  • my dad, his brothers, cousins and friends were in C company. i get very emotional when i see or hear anything to do with the 28th. the original film footage shows my mum a couple of times, waving out to the soldiers as the ship was docking. the camera actually shows her for quite a few seconds - side on views and then front on. later when they are all having kai, the camera shows dad with his back to the camera, sitting astride the form, looking at mum who is facing the table.

  • My Father was in A and HQ Companys. Wounded in Greece, missed Crete, but was back in the action again at Al Alamein and Italy/Monte Cassino. It is very nice to find this photo-montage.

There is an excellent archival film of the 28th Maori Battalion returning home to New Zealand. 'm unable to post the link here, but go to NZ On Screen and search for Maori Battalion Returns (Weekly Review 232). Kia ora.

  • ko whanau ko tahi tatau

  • I was at the maori battalion reunion in Kaitaia 30 years ago (!) and when i think back, these guys were only two generations removed from my Ancestors who fought the British army in the 1800s . The haka at 5.28 brings a feeling a pride to me .Kia kaha Nga tamatoa!!

  • I was at the maori battalion reunion in Kaitaia 30 years ago (!) and when i think back, these guys were only two generations removed from my Ancestors who fought the British army in the 1800s Kia kaha Nga tamatoa!!

  • My great grandfather fought in this during ww2!! Im so proud!

  • the 28th were an awesome bunch as were all new zealanders maori and pakeha new zealanders who served and went beyond what was called for to help others in war....lets hope those places such as greece and crete remember them.

  • kiwis and aussies join ww2 from day one sending our fathers, brothers, sons thousands of miles away from home when other countrys remained netural despite the germans being on their doorsteps. We have so much to be proud of.although we love to bag each others country we have a common bond.RESPECT.

  • @hidepuller2008

    Aye, ANZAC's Rule

  • In WW1 maori were not allowed guns as the british didnt want brown men killing white men so they were use as labourers.Letters written to love ones found on dead german soldiers talked about how they were not going to make it out alive because they were up against superior warriors of trench warfare and how they feared hearing the haka(war cry)maori did b4 launching a attack.i believe most german soldiers were ordinary family men just trying to live and make it back home.LEST WE FORGET.

  • The quote from rommel was give me 10 divisions of maori soldiers and the war would be quickly over. Also he said that maori were the greatest fighting force he ever fought against.A great compilment really.Maori were masters of trench warfare having being the first ppl to use it in thier own wars against each other for hundreds of years. The british found that out having suffered casualtys of 10-1 in thier war against maori.

  • @MegaTeariki I've removed your post because abusive language and swearing will not be tolerated. You are most welcome to comment, but please watch the language.

  • True warriors who fought against the Nazi's with such bravery. Their nation should be proud of them all. For Rommel to make this comment then it is real recognition of their contribution.

  • Respect to all those who died in WW2, and yes the Germans aswell. A Company Hard

  • Proud soldiers who should be remembered; great music. Fine video, hemi. Thank you.

  • my grandfather & hes brother were p.o.ws both were 28th maori battalion they both tryed to get out 1st time they both got caught the germans smashed my grandfather in the eye with the end of there guns. 3rd time they were both running away my grandfather looked back & saw hes brother getting shot. would hate that to happen to any1. r.i.p to all that fought & died in ww1/2. ps my dad was 161 battery in vietnam & that was hes dad in the 28th who made it home.

  • i am a child of 28 maori bat comp B my dad died age 80 he was proud as i am cos i no my mokos wil secure that i cry evryday 2 hav my dad hea n now my 80 yr old mother lives without her luv of life 2 all bat i am so proud 2 b apart of UZ cos im da 6th eldest of 12 chidren DAD we luv you

  • Rommel said that if he had 1 million Maori soldiers, he would of won the war.

I don't doubt his statement for a second

  • @Spootmaker he said it alrite...

  • @Spootmaker Rommel said he only needed 1000 not 1 million.

  • @Spootmaker I THINK IT WAS A COUPLE OF BATTLIONS OF MAORI & GHURKA ,BUT MEAN ALL THE SAME ,THEY SHOULD SPILL OR THE BEANS ON HOW MASSIVE OUR KOROS WERE,MOVIES LIKE THE BAND OF BROS ,INGLORIOUS BASTARDS WERE MODELED ON THE MAORI IM SURE OF IT

  • @zhyarnkatie what do you mean band of brothers was modeled on the maori

  • @boxing238 its just my opinion ,i look at it this way ,the maori hunted nazi's [inglorious bastards],they were brothers & kinsmen [band of brothers],the maori had more than 10 sets of brothers fighting in 1 battilion [saving private ryan],& all these films never say that there was other units in the war that had the same history, its because the americans etc want to uphold the myth that they are superior & immortal,

  • i had relatives in maori battalion and relatives in german werhmacht.......i have family from england and nga puhi....point is ....we know who starts the wars and they can allways be blamed for the horrors of it.......but we can allways be proud of those who serve.....those who go beyond ..the 28th went beyond the call of duty in all areas....north africa and italy.

  • @MrBillybeetroot bro.Jah bless you and yours :)

  • mean maori mean

  • Maybe someone can shed some light on a story i once heard. The Maori Battalion was fighting some German solders, who, didnt know much about the Maori other than they would eat their enemies. The story goes that the Maori were out of ammunition so, striped down to their traditional gear and performed a Haka. As a result the German solders fled. Is it just a story or does someone know something of this?

  • @fallonnathan It's true, there is an account of it in the stunning book "The Day of Battle" by Rick Atkinson. The Maori preformed the haka, joined in by some Crete allies who started screaming their own battle cry, they attacked and found the german positions deserted.

  • @thesupersapians Thanks for that. I'll look that book up and give it a read :D If i ever hear a haka it sends shivers up and down my spine, its so powerful!

  • tru warriors of aotearoa.

my dad fought in ww2 maori battalion

  • two words HONOUR, PRIDE

  • Awesome, thanks for the opportunity to see these shots. I'm a half caste proud of both sides. I always shed a tear for the bravery of these men, and the loss their lives brought to the people, they will never be forgotten. Mo ake tonu atu!

  • Respect, admiration and pride from your brothers in Australia!

  • this Gives me a patriotic pride we were elite soilders my Godness Erwin Rommel AKA Desert fox wanted maoris in his army

  • I am a pakeha - I do not use that word lightly - I don't like it's modern connotation. I am of Scots and Irish heritage. My grandfather died in 1917 fighting for New Zealand and never knew my father. My mother's brother died in WW2. I honour them.

I honour the Maori who gave their lives in both wars . This is a beautiful tribute .

  • My family come from Motiti Island off the Bay of Plenty coast. We lost one warrior in Tunisia. My father came home with the other survivors from our Island. Respect!

  • Reading about the heroism of the 28th battalion gives me a great sense of pride. I remember 7th form History reading a British Officer's account in which a of these men did the Haka while being fired upon, they then charged a machine gun bunker bearing down on the German occupants with patu.

  • This is primo bro, people need to get over themselfs,if your black or yah white, who cares our tipuna and yours all went to fight for the same thing, the freedom of the whanau, the people, the land, our country and our kingitanga.Be proud,be staunch an stand true.Mauri ora!!!!

  • I look at this with pride knowing my family are amoung these people who served and died for our great nation and for perserving our way of life not only in new zealand but across the world. And it shows what we can achieve as collective not just new zealand but world wide.

  • where did you get your photos from

  • Great guys. They have the same great spirit as the US Marine Corps. No one should listen to the rubbish from the English downgrading them.

  • respect to the boys of the 28th. anything else below is fckd....love the legacy fellas

  • Dont appologise. All comments should be removed including mine. Its not for us to comment about these mens lives. Your comments will never impact on them so who cares what you think.

  • A couple of people will know these names.

    Bernard Hardiman and Charlie Shelford(Haha).

I dont know much of Bernard, but i do know Charlie, being one heck of a rogue, was also a brave man to the end, literally.

Took on a whole Italian Camp single Handedly and won, stole a Jeep and raided Nazi and Italian Camps and made a profit.

In his face, told the prime minister and generals to shove their award to him up their asses.

3:35 wow those guys are kinda tall.

  • my granfather was in the 28th Len wikio r.i.p kia kaha

  • pretty disappointed with all the racist stuff in the comments...if you wanna divide the world along those lines you shouldve been fighting for the Nazis, that was the philosophy many of these men died fightng against. All NZers should be proud of the heroic efforts of the 28th Battalion.... those men went through Hell and back for us...and our countries freedom and prosperity was secured from it...for which we should all be grateful. Im not Maori but Im sure as hell proud of those guys

  • I agree.

That's why I removed 'some' comments.

I'm not taking sides, it's just that this is a public forum and alot of people of all ages, crede, color and race, read the postings or comments left here.

I apologise to the people, of whose comments, that I removed.

  • @hemi2k6 It's understandable that some people will take exception to an axis tune. That said, beautiful song and tune. We are over it now but to veterans, this is Italian.

  • thanks mate ,it makes me proud to see kiwis sticking up for the Maori people with such a dignified approach

  • Well said mate.

  • @EvKrusty, NZers are warriors, like the pacific, they fight hard, like the warriors of old, they fear no death, fighting with honour, better than those bloody british

  • @EvKrusty thanks Bro,it does mean so much to those of us that are Maori, but more so,Had family that fought in that war!

  • OH I found it Erwin Rommel

  • yr an idiot manu.........

  • There was another one I liked- It was yelled at GATE PA when the Maori were about to attack, " OH God help us, they come in the thousands " what made it so embaressin was that there some where close to 300 vs over 1,200 Opposition -

and Maori did the Haka when the soldiers were retreating to stur back the fight and, they even gave medical care to Kiwi friends on the Opposition lines, then resumed.

  • Tryin to rewrite history again aye? General Cameron (Cameron rd is named after him) sent the attack in too late in the day as the attacking troops went in confusion was sowen in the front ranks so they retreated it was too late to attack again so they went in again to find the Pa abandoned because the Maori knew they would get their arses kicked but tahts ok General Cameron and Greerton gave them a very bloody nose down the road in Pyes Pa ha ha ha lol learn some real history BOY

  • @bommer321...the Maori had to fight two wars, the 1 in wwII along side ther pakeha brothers and the 1 against the opression of the pakeha that they fought with. General Cameron and Greeton were as racist as they come and would deny the Maori Battalion their due. Mixing their brand of lies with some truths that existed @ the time, it would be easy for any pakeha to believe the cowardice of the Maori Battalion. Instead the Maori Battalion represented and Cameron & Greeton were embarassed by this

  • @stormer4LyfE are you a retard? there was no Maori battalion at gate pa FOOL. Oh and the Maori Battalion WW1 and WW2 were never cowards you just insulted them lol

  • Comment removed

  • @bommer321 I never said they were cowards idiot, merely pointing to the fact that it would be easier for the pakeha to believe so FOOL!!

  • @stormer4LyfE You DOLT!!!!!! monkey foreskin eyes!!!!!!!

  • The Maori had the choice to go to war or stay home.Of course they went and did themselves proud as did most other soldiers.Well my family is part Maori mothers side and my son has been in the French Foreign Legion for 18 years so tradition carries on

  • whatever loser you lot try and rewrite history but you dont fool anyone just yourselves

  • if u feel so strongly bout this why dont u come out in public and stand your ground??...their is nothing else to prove. it is you who must prove that what you say has an ounce of truth in it!!!!...BOY!!!!!

  • Man anyone would think the way you all go on the 28th Batt won the war by itself. NZ sent over a whole Army Corps a battalion is 1000 men strong my grandfather was CO of 19th Batt but you dont see them talking themselves up

  • thats because Erwin Rommel himself said the Maori battalion was the most fearsist fighting force he had evere seen! Dats why as maoris we are proud! We take nothing away from any of the other soldiers in the war they fought well too and i thank them aswell to! some of these people are our family and we are proud of them just like im sure your proud of your grandfarther too!

  • too right mate! he even said "

Wenn ich tausend Maori Bataillon's, ich konnte die Welt

If i had a thousand maori battalion's, I could defeat the world"

  • Dude noone is taking anything away from anyone else who fought and died in the war. But we are proud of our history and our tipuna. They had to fight to go to war, and when they got there they were made famous by their fighting ability. By all means go out there and be proud of your grandfather and the rest of the expiditionary force, but don't try to take away the pride we have for our fathers, who gave their lives for your freedom aswell as ours.

    Arohanui.

  • So true!!! Both my grandparents, my mum's dad, as well as my dad's dad, had both fought in WW2.. My mum's dad, was based in North Aftrica, chasing the 'Desert Fox'. My dad's dad, was with the 28th Maori Battion. They fought for: God, our people and our country!!!
