  • Yeah any real unix /linux administrator will tell you that they prefer to use Linux, but they are happy with the stability of system V unixes. Preferably when still under service contract.

  • too fast!!!

  • How did you manage to make the dock behave like that?? (When you click on icon, another icons spread from it) Wow!

  • @rayyanputra

same here, the zooming dock gets nauseating after a while.

  • These things might look a little like Mac OS, but they can't capture the feel of it's user interface.

  • Why is this OS so horrible ? The only thing in common with OS X is the background.

  • @kepap85 thats because the efects of Mac OS

  • mac os x is based on unix and linux versions are full of unix

  • I have lost respect for linux now ;)

  • who cares for that its a nice os

  • It's Linux Mint, not Mint Linux!

  • @icyshadow0 Actually, it's GNU/Linux Mint, not Linux Mint or Mint Linux :)

  • @theif519 the name of the OS is Linux Mint

  • @theif519 How bout we change its name to UNIX Mint or UNIX Ubuntu. Get rid of the free loader Linux attitude ! BSD is free UNIX

  • @astrialkil Really now? I could have sworn BSD stopped being considered UNIX after they developed their own BSD Lite kernel.

  • @theif519 well i haven't been back up to the BSD web site in a few years...maybe they changed !

  • Linux Mint would not work on my laptop right. Ubuntu does.

  • @daesix WHAT ARE YOUR SPECS sorry for caps but I would like to know your specs because I've had the exact opposite happen for me in ubuntu

  • Could you please post a guide for us to achieve this? :) Would be awe - wait for it

    SOME!

  • how the hell did you manage to do that with mint??? i also have it and it's comparable to windows 95!

  • oh god its horrifying get a real mac.

  • @eitrig Maybe he will get one if It wouldn't cost the same as a car. They are too expensive,Mint is free.

  • @TheSpikey39 So you drive a car worth 1 grand, you must be a real poor faggot.

  • @eitrig 1)I have only 14 years,so I don't have a car. 2)Mac is actually based on Unix (like all Linux distros) so it's just a Linux distro with some extra programs and a new skin. It's really worth it?No.

And don't get me wrong.I didn't said I hate Macs,I actually like them but the price is the dealbraker.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheSpikey39 No linux is a kernel, osx is not a linux distro it uses a completely different kernel called darwin.

  • @TheSpikey39 Also the price is fair, now you are most likely going to say "hurrrrrr durrrrrrrr i cn get a pc with twice teh speks" well yes you could but then its like saying i could get a 10 thousand dollar honda that beats a 70 thousand dollar bmw in raw horse power.

  • @eitrig Ok,then my bad.And I didn't even thinked saying that,although it's true.Also,you can't compare a Honda to a BMW.

I like Mint and Mac,but hate Windows....all three have disavantages and avantages. But any Linux distro and Mac can beat Windows anytime, except gaming.

  • @TheSpikey39 yes windows is bad and linux is fine, tho i prefer ubuntu.

  • @eitrig Not the same. I would say a Mac and "PC" is like Aston Martin and Porsche. Mac is an Aston Martin Vantage where as you could get a 911 that has better specs/performance for a little less or the same price. Or you could substitute the 911 for a Nissan GT-R in this example although the Nissan doesn't have the same luxuries, where as you can get a "PC" with the same luxuries and better performing specs than a Mac. A Jaguar is another example of a car Macintosh.

  • Like mac, only better

  • Final Cut? Cinelerra.

    iWork? OpenOffice.

    iChat? Pidgin/Empathy

    Mail? Evolution.

App Store? Software Center, only with everything free.

Antivirus? Not MY problem running Mint KDE.

Snow Leopard? So much that I can't name them all...

$29 per computer? FREE for all the computers.

    Chrome? Chromium.

  • @A135S4656 final cut vs cinelerra?????? now that's funny.... 29 bucks per computer, more then reasonable and guess what, all the hardware works after the upgrade, no tweakin this or that, my time is worth more then the 29bucks for the license.... can you play a dvd on a fresh install without using the terminal? I can with my mac, that 29bucks helps pay for the codecs... hell I can with my windows box too... Antivirus? Mac has the same security model as you do. Honestly I love Linux but..

  • @mrRhwalden Yeah, and now $30 for as many computers as you want.

Sure I really like Linux and Windows too, but I really can't see anything taking out Mac OS X.

Also Cinelerra is okay, but Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 are almost like the perfect extremely professional editors I know of.

  • F4i|_

  • @SFMSgamingClan Incorrect. Microsoft was only based off of Dos when Win95 came out. It sheded off doss long time ago bud with XP.

    you are False

  • is this linux mint 10 Julia?

  • howd u get winamp to work on linux? did u use wine? and whats that music program with the wolf howling icon?

  • @leoS101 There's an open source winamp look-a-like, it's called qmmp (you can install it through the software manager). The howling wolf is Amarok, but I don't like that program. It's a bit heavy and takes too much time to load in comparison with the standard rhythmbox

  • O_O

  • linux is a more powerful and stable operating system than OSX. OSX is supposed to mimic linux but it's nothing like it. It lacks too much critical components. it's only a matter of time before OSX's will be bombarded with viruses. As for the Mint looking like linux, you just downloaded the mac theme duh!

  • @Juilkca the most vulnerable part of your computer is your home directory what you obviously have read and write access to, an exploit in firefox or openoffice can potentially wipe your documents or add some script which executes when you log in to your session on linux. from a gentoo and windows 7 user.

  • @Juilkca You're so freakin' dumb!! Mac OS is older than Linux and Windows ! Linux is an open source copy of Unix which Mac OS is based on !!

  • @aetRene sorry for being so 'freakin' dumb'. I was misinformed and spoke too soon. Yes, Mac OS is based on Unix. I can't help the feeling that your a major Mac fanatic. Anyway, MAC took their OS public at point (accepted by FSF) then used proprietary software to make OSX. Not so free anymore.

  • @Appstorereviewer2

lol microsoft did not creat the first computer, they just popularized it. IBM and a bunch of other companies created the first consumer computer and even before that there were computers that would send secret intelligence since WWII. Silly child. Stop typing in all caps.

  • @ethicks00 Tell my TI99/4A or COCO that microsoft created the first consumer computer.... TRS-80 anyone? We had the Model1, Model2, Model3... all three of those ran CPM and had nothing to do with Mr. Gates or Mr. Jobs.

  • @Appstorereviewer2 false microsoft BOUGHT the first computer company don't you know windows was made from DOS. dos is still used in windows as well file extensions .exe .doc all those are DOS

  • @SFMSgamingClan Microsoft didn't buy the first computer company. Exe, doc, are file extensions that are more an industry standard. They have little to do with DOS. EXE and COM have more to do with CPM then DOS it's just what they used to determine file types for the OS. Mac's and LINUX use the .*** file extensions as well. Ever hear of a *.RPM or *.YUM file? What about a *.deb file? HOw bout *.dmg?

  • @aetRene

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Linux is an open source copy of UNIX?

    Yeah right.

You, Sir, are a tech expert. Or even a wizard.

    Thx for the good laugh.

  • @Warp1281 Linux actually is an open source copy of UNIX. I recommend the Wikipedia article on the history of Linux.

I suppose the ignorant laugh at anything.

  • @MaxLittlemore Linux is based off of Minix, but was made from scratch. Minix is based off of BSD, but was made from scratch. Linux is UNIX compliant, but hardly a copy of UNIX.

  • @soylalegion Linux may have been loosely based on ("off of" is such an odd grammatical anomaly) Minix to start with. But these days they are nothing alike. Linux is not a microkernel for starters.

Why say "based off of but developed from scratch" when you effectively mean "copy"? Is it like saying "off of" when you mean "on" or "utilise" when you mean "use"?

Yeah, pedantically Linux is a copy of a copy of UNIX, but that kinda makes it a copy of UNIX. A good one at that.

  • @Warp1281 It actually is. You, sir, are a jackass.

  • @Warp1281

Wouldn't BSD be considered the open source copy of UNIX?

  • @BigBobsh2o actually all modern forms of "unix" are just copies

  • @Juilkca I have been running a Macbook pro (my first mac)for the last year and it's been the most stable computer I've ever owned. I am missing Linux a bit tho, but that is only cause I like to tinker. But I love imove and final cut, you just can't get anything that works even close to it in linux. I sure as hell don't miss windows tho. OSx and Linux give me a warm feeling when I use my computer.... windows... well, I grit my teeth and bare it.

  • Why would you want your linux to look like a mac? if you could make it look 100% it would be a bit cool, but it still don't look as cool and sophisticated as mac OS X. And no i am no mac fan, i work in Ubuntu linux every day, and i run windows 7 in a virtual machine because whine is some tricky shit to get working : )

  • sorry, but Mac OS X does not look cheap and desperate like that

  • nah, thats just a hall of alot desktop apps :)

  • winamp?¿ utorrent? WTF!

  • @5220640 i think he's using wine for those programs

  • @chris020891 effectively, but it is something nice xD

  • @5220640 that's right :-)

  • @5220640 it's vine :)

  • @OmkaraD i know xD

  • Comment removed

  • @5220640 wine?

  • @Willielikesmonkeys yes man, that need?

  • @5220640

    Wine. FTW!

  • If all the people that used PIRATE software used open source instead, there would be more users & contributors, and the world would be a better place.

open source is important because its unwise to become dependant on something someone else controls.

  • /hirens boot cd 10.5 has a mini linux that works without installing even can conect to whireles install mozila on it .etc, you can use it all soo to enter on any infected site.

  • there is utorrent for linux?

  • @DickKnowsBest I know the topic isn't about gaming but "there isn't a thing linux can't do that windows or OSX can do" I highly disagree with that. Even with Wine all the games I tried to run is just suck the max fps I could get was 5. You'd say Crossover, oh but thats not free :O. So, there're still so many drawbacks in Linux. No offense I'm using Linux too and I love it, but a general user don't really want to mess with it for a long time. (I'd switch if I could run my games on it :\)

  • @DickKnowsBest Not a bad analogy at all. It's actually a very good analogy, and I agree completely :)

  • @DickKnowsBest Well to stick with Linux, again, it has the advantage of being free. Microsoft pulled a big market by contracting with OEMs to pre-install Windows as a standard on purchased PCs though. Anyway, my point is that yes, there is a trade-off, but I mean, anyone that has used Linux has to admit, it's not easy to deal with sometimes, especially if you're new to it. On Windows an exe file can do everything. On Linux it's often a long process that few people will ever want to deal with.

  • It also has to do with a lot of software support. The open source libraries of Linux are great and all, but many people use and will prefer to keep using their own software that they buy. All I'm saying is, Linux is designed for people that can handle it, and simply for people that don't need any more then the open source software it comes with. I am not a professional by any means, and I find Linux to be insufficient to my needs.

  • @DickKnowsBest I somewhat have to disagree. If it was really as good as you say, there wouldn't be any reason for professionals to pay thousands of dollars for high-end software if they could just get it for free. From personal experience I can tell you that sure, Blender works great once you get used to it, but it's not as efficient as a professional tool may be, causing you to take longer making models etc. and at the end, your results aren't as realistic or aesthetic. Just saying.

  • one thing i dont like linux or ubuntu... NOT ORGANIZED...

  • @ammaray2 just because it's not the same file tree as in windows or mac, doesn't mean it's not organized... Actually, after you know the file tree, you see it's much more organized than windows or mac, in my opinion.

  • what form of mint is this? i've found several, and i'm not sure which is which.

  • linux is crap.

  • @ThePikachuFanGirl You're crap.

  • Cool themes....

  • @gingerkid367 Since this comment 11 months ago I've been using it on a regular bases for my CS classes, yes I got used to it, but no I still don't consider it a productive OS for everyday work. I don't think it will ever be more than a developer platform or a geek toy as long as it doesn't sell itself out to a company that would release it as the third major mass-marketed OS with commercial software promotions.

  • @PoliticalHell if Linux "sells itself" (wich is already impossible), it wouldn't be Linux anymore, just another Limited Proprietary Expensive software. The Free Software idea is what causes it to grow faster than any other OS out there, and if by "everyday work" you mean e-mail reading, internet browsing, Office working etc .. I'm sure the Desktop Distros are more than good enough to do that.

  • @EFDos Kind of, but it will always be an outcast. Nobody will develop for it because it isn't managed and supported. There is no company over-viewing the user experience. Sure, you can do email and web browsing (at the cost of a steep learning curve), but what if I want to edit a movie? If I miraculously even manage to get the software to install, and figure out how to get it working without a platter of errors, I'll still be stuck with something that is freeware quality and useless for pro work

  • @PoliticalHell Some companies (even in game industry) does develop programs for linux, even thought there are very few of them. I don't think it's about what you said, cause each distro is managed and supported by it's owners. I think it's about Microsoft being a Monopoly, most companies has eyes only for windows. And have you tried Ubuntu 10.04? It comes with Pitivi, a video editing software. So far, i found it very good, stable and easy-to-use. And yes, there are free software with pro quality

  • @EFDos Yes, Microsoft is a monopoly and that's probably the biggest part of why everyone develops for Windows, but look at the statistics. When Dell offered Ubuntu as the main OS in their computers, most people hated it and returned their whole computer because Ubuntu wasn't working for them. There's a reason Windows, despite all of its reported problems, is still the main OS on computers. It isn't because PC manufacturers want to charge an additional $200 for their machine.

  • where can i download it?

  • ive switched to linux after using macs for the past 6 years.

this does not look like mac os x. nor does any other attempt at replicating the look and feel. theyre all an utter fail

  • Well thats cause you have to do a bit of tweaking. Macs are almost same as linux. So I dont know what ubuntu or mint can do to supprise you

  • correction you switched from unix to Linux.

  • @Ipreachfromscripts um there wasn't anything wrong with what I said. "ive switched to linux after using macs for the past 6 years."

    nice job though fanboy.

  • uh no you switched from a UNIX ( Mac)

    and switched to a Linux

and as far as fan boy goes, I have used all three UNIX, Linux(es), and windows.

and I even used apple back in the day.

they all have strengths and weaknesses but at the end of the day osx= UNIX.

  • @Ipreachfromscripts i cant believe you tried to start a retarded argument like this but I never said anything incorrect, damn grow up and stfu. i never said i switched from mac, i said i switched to linux after using macs. nuff said now stfu and go watch some gay 8bit porn cause im sure you like things computerized, even sex

  • so your saying that Mac isn't a UNIX based operating system?

  • ive switched to linux after using macs for the past 6 years.

    is what you said.

I only said that you said you switched from which suggests you had used macs which is a UNIX based OS.

so if you have used OS X you have used UNIX.

don't think so? check apples web site.

  • u using rocketdock or linux comes with those settings

  • @robking3

he's using awn navigator, rocketdock if for windows.

  • lol, the name of this linux account is "Elyssa" with an E

  • its the same starter background as mac but then in blue

    jeez suck ass

  • is this mac4lin? my linux mint 7 system looks like that!

  • i use Linux mint and wondering how u got that cool looking bar at the bottom

  • I wonder too where u got that "bar" at the bottom.. Can you post link?

  • avant window navigator or cairo dock

  • how do i use it to get the bar at the bottom???

  • the bar is called avant window navigator.

just install the package avant-window-navigator with the software installer or just type sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator in the console

  • thx alot i got it now

  • how I can do this Download

  • Omg, Looking better Than Normal mac On that Bar o.o

  • MInt Linux is thee best Linux version! WTH would someone want to keep WIndows & all its issues???? Give me stability of bull crap any day!!! P.S How do I get my mint linux 2 l@@k like Mac osx?

  • but...ubuntu is cool too?...isn't it?

  • kinda but not like the windows setup

  • do I search for Mint Linux 7 as Mac OS X on Google?

sweet setup. Is there a video editor for linux mint?

  • re : " Is there a video editor for linux mint? "

Many actually, just type in Pitivi or Kdenlive or Openmovieeditor in the installer. Or you can see if "akirad" still has his cinelerra installer available. cinelerra has a steep learning curve though.

  • ubuntu linux makes it easy to do so... install windows first, then ubuntu... mint linux is based on ubuntu so this is do-able.... just create 2 partitions... one for windows and the other for linux... after windows is installed, install linux... at the end of installing linux it'll ask you to install grub boot loader... it'll detect windows on the hdd.... pretty simple...

  • so can i replace linux with windows vista, or is it a bad idea

  • i change between them a lot

but why replace. do a dual boot

  • Dude no one replaces a linux for a windows especially vista. . .

Use XP or something if you really have to do it

  • Bad idea.

  • you can but it depends on your preference... people like linux for customization... at least that's why I like it... I'd do XP if I had to do windows

  • depends, I haven't been using linux too long but I do find myself running back to windows for certain things, using word and syncing my zune mostly. Plus as a linux noob it's so much easier for me to install and uninstall software. I messed up my entire linux installation by trying to uninstall a dock (again I'm a noob.) consider a dualboot

Apcmag(dot)com did a really nice story about replacing windows with linux, give it a gander.

  • I like both Linux (my choice of distro is Ubuntu) as well as Mac OS X for different reasoning, but I think it's time for the Linux community to understand that it's more important to add innovation to a UI than it is to emulate another UI well. Quit being so focused on Windows and Mac OS X replacement, and do your own thing.

Almost any Mac user can tell you that this does a poor job of actually emulating the Aqua user experience anyway.

  • Oh yes. They are TOTALLY copying Winshit and OS X.

Considering linux has had spaces and expose for ages. Many other features found in both windows and mac can be tracked back to a given linux build.

However, they are still working on trying to catch up, you have to realize that the features in OS X and Windows are universally accepted and used. Linux needs to incorporate them at some point.

And given HP and a few other netbook distributors and designers are pitching for linux over windows...

  • winshit? you realize mac stole the unix kernel ages ago (unix was the main os back then) and they have hates mac since thats why they copy os x. and as for windows well linux mint is the only one with a start menu

  • Well often they do their own thing, people choose to make their linux look like OS X and (for some weird reason (Windows isn't incredible from an aesthetics point of view)) Windows, and it is a laugh mucking about, but to give props to linux Compiz-Fusion is epic if you've got the power to run it smoothly.

  • umm... you missed the point.

  • all but nothing ever works on it.??

i guess you do not have pretty knowledge about Linux...

    click...next ...and go away....lol

  • I've tried it, I hated it. It's so complicated, figuring anything out at all is hours of Googling, even if I know how to use the terminal, it's still hidden secrets to change anything you need and you need forum reference. On top of that, almost every single program for Linux has a bunch of glitches in it.

  • glitches? it's more stable than Windows :) I never used Linux before, after installing it, took me less than a day to get used to it. And I can run Windows apps on Linux with no problems (Wine is the way to go :))

  • I quit on Wine the moment I tried to install my first Windows application, iTunes, and it failed miserably. I tried using one of the free software packages for Linux, it was horrible. I tried burning a CD, nothing worked until I finally found one burner that couldn't do double-layer burning, and screwed up the names of every file it burned. Generally, Linux is only good for very lightweight computing in my experience.

  • @PoliticalHell:

Did you tried "Songbird" or "atunes" as itunes replacement?

Brasero solved the issue about the double layer dvds or if not there is k3b..

  • "Stable" is a matter of interpretation. Try getting mutli-monitor support without editing config files and I'll be sold... Linux is not quite ready for prime time.

  • It's not as easy to use as Windows. However, Linux is safer and more fun, if you just try some things out.

I dual boot Ubuntu and XP with the goal of being all Linux all the time in 2010. Still, as you have suggest, there is a learning curve with some apps and with installing some software to get things going.

  • I currently dual-boot Ubuntu 8.10, and I've tried to install Wine. It didn't work at ALL, no matter what I did. Adobe Flash Player, the only way I got it was by adding it as a firefox plugin manually. It's problems like these that keep me away from Ubuntu, sadly.

  • These problems are probably easy for people more technical than myself.

However, I share your frustration and hope Ubuntu improves in the areas you discuss.

  • @PoliticalHell Wtf ? :D You obviously dont know how to install things on it :D

  • @PoliticalHell

Hey ignorant one, "You get what you pay for" does not apply to the opensource world.

    Thanks,

  • @h1ll37 So what's the term that applies for "a bunch of developers doing case studies or spare-time hobby work and not caring to make it perfect because they don't profit from it"? Communism would be my second choice I suppose.

  • Correction: some open-source things, which are not really even open source, are good, but then those are typically developed by big companies that have profit to gain.

  • @PoliticalHell

Linux doesn't have "A bunch of developers doing case studies or spare-time hobby work and not caring to make it perfect because they don't profit from it"... people who develop towards Linux do it for pride and to be able to say I made this. If you don't know what it feels like to have pride after making something you aren't getting paid for then you need to get out more.

  • @PoliticalHell HURR DURR OPEN SOURCE IZ COMMUNISM

  • @locutusofworm DUHH

  • used few of them, most of the os u write here are not used for the desktop application they are used for different programming purpose!

  • Windows,GNU/Linux, MacOS X, Solaris,MacOS Classic?? X or what?

most of the OS you mention are not used for desktop home purposes.they are mostly used for the programming purposes/

  • Download the copy of Mint and burn and use it!

I personally use all the three OS,MAC,Linux and Windows!Linux is best among them you can customize it anyway you want and they are hell lighter man even you can run it 112 MB RAM !!

Best part is you can learn most of the things which windows/MAC OS hides!

  • i have MAC OS X as my operating system on a Macbook.. how can i switch to this version of Linux?? is it as light and as fast as Mac OS X? What are the technical advantages and disadvantages of linux comparing to MAC OS X??

    thank you!

  • The disadvantages are that you will have to spend much time, trying to get Linux to be fully compatible with your hardware. It can be light and fast depending on compatibility.

Don't alter your Macbook 1 bit. instead, buy a cheap laptop on Ebay and install Linux on that, and I think you'll get good results.

  • you can use boot camp so you dont loose OS X

  • Linux Mint in particular is a pretty good distro of LInux. It comes iwht a lot of support for MP3 and WMV formats (ususally these kidns of formats are restricted and oyu have to go through some installation stuff to get them). Linux also boots off a CD so you can try it before you install it, and it comes with a range of applications so you can get started on work immediately (already comes with an AWESOME office suite, media player, e-mail, internet, etc.)

    It's cool.

  • use VMWare to install linux in virtual machine else you can try it with bootcamp !!

Linux is faster google it !

  • Linux slow at bootup. The kernel is slower at detecting hardware at boot. It is a known problem and is being fixed by the developers.

  • @soptamer Both Linux and Mac OS X are based on UNIX, I would keep OSX on your Macbook and just use VMWare for linux
