Reminds me of when my great great great grand pappy used to tell stories of firing the coals in the steam boxes! He ran the spin span with woo woo's on it!
Where is the 425 now? I remember seeing it along with the 2102 in 1999 at Steamtown. Then they both left the roundhouse and I haven't heard anything. I remember the engineer Charlie Kackel. He was amazing
That's one of the most beautiful engines I've ever seen. And that Reading 6-chime is sounding great. One thing I miss though is the look it had back in the day. It looked better that way... But it's not my engine sadly.
Yes Andy is the owner, he is also a licensed engineer for his railroad. The Late Charlie Kachle tought Andy and Shane and Christ Bost to run steam. Charlie was a engineer for the Reading Company, he started in 1942 as a firmen , but very soon move to the engineer seat. He worked for the railroad from 1942 to 1981. Then in the mid 1980's he came to work for the Blue Mountain & Reading, Now known as the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern, they desolved the BM&R in 1995.
i cant believe that they changed the headlight on it now. i thought it looked so much better in this video. i like how it is now too, but it just doesn't llok the same
I agree. I for one prefer the high-mounted headlight with the round baldwin numberplate in the center of the smokebox, but It's not my engine. It still looks good with the headlight centered, but not quite the same.
I for one prefer the higher mounted headlight, and the Baldwin number plate. It looked so much better back then... It looks good now, but not as good as she did back then.
I still like the old whistle it had on it before the resto project. Don't get me wrong. .this one sounds awesome.. but the lower pitched one sounded better for the 425 if you ask me.
That'd be the Boston and Maine 6 chime... The one in this video is a Reading 6 chime... Personally, I like the Boston and Maine a bit better also, it has a much deeper tone. Actually, the B&M is probably my favorite whistle out there.
Thanks so much for this video! I'm currently building a model of the #425 and it's been a big help. I'm thrilled to learn she's back on her feet again.
This video is amazing. Last I saw this was the fall fest in '96, and I was only 9 years old. It looks awesaome, but I have 2 questions. I thought it only had one coal tender?? Because I noticed there are now 2. And if it's a "test run" how did it do?
My God that is so inspiring! Thanks very much for that top quality clip with outstanding audio! I grew up watching the Reading Rambles on their way out of the city towards Sinking Springs, those wonderful old T1s. Many thanks again!
Never heard of this locomotive before but I already like it. Shame that some of the other greats like SSW 819,Southern 630 and 722,and A&WP 290 are going to take a while but in the end it will be worth it.
Its about ^%#^%$ time fella's. Even without paint on the cab she looks great!! We've been suffering from lack of American made steam for some time now. (Chinese at BelDel and Canadian at Scranton). Any plans to run it in the gorge?
Yeah I know but, Im just so sick of China and Canada and Mexico taking our jobs and industry.
I want to see something built and operated by the AMERICAN WORKING MAN. No offense intended, I just love my country and prefer to honor the men who made it great.
Uh... Mexicans and Canadians are Americans too. Bu no one is taking what's rightfully yours, you make them sound like thieves, they are humans beings trying to feed their families. If you're sick, be sick of US business practice that is drive by the bottom line... and spreads the wealth to people that would die for a tithe of what you have.
What planet are you on? I used the word American in the colloquial sense. They are thieves...they took my job and my fathers and thousands others. I don't care if they are poor and starving and oppressed, thats their problem. If they want freedom and wealth let them fight their own government and earn it instead of sneaking across the border like a bunch of lazy cowards. If you dont have any national pride I pity you. Go burn a flag and lite a doobey off it you hippy.
I cannot get over the excitement with the return of this fantastic Baldwin. There is a part of me that goes crazy over 425 and I truly believe that her return shall draw much excitement here in the East. The Whistle, the exhaust, and speeds that she reaches on the mainlines is truly spectacular.
The Boston and Maine whistle was on he 425 quite a bit in the early 90s though 96. Its owned by Andy. As for the Reading 6er on her now that also belongs to Andy. The whistle from the 179 is NOT the same. That is owned by an employee of the railroad.
Where in ON do you live, Oscaletrainguy? I know Kingston as I was there July 2006, along with Toronto and Niagara Falls as well. No steam in ON Canada? I thought there's the Hull-Wakefield steam train? And one closer to Toronto? And CP has their steam program. But, eastern PA where I live has the most live steam. Strasburg, Kempton, New Hope, Scranton, Reading & Northern, Middletown, Wilmington & Western in DE and Bel-Del in Phillipsburg, NJ across from Easton, PA.
Ahhh yea! Nice video work. This is fabulous to see the return of #425! Saw her in person back in the 90's. Was worried this Pacific would never return to service but there it goes........
The B&M whistle is supposedly the one it wore in the 1990's, I think 1995 and part of 1996. It was a deep throated six chime step-top, that had a very striking melody to it.
Oh yes that one. Yes, I've heard it was some sort of Frisco 5-chime long-bell but that's just word of mouth. That whistle also made it's way onto 2102 during the years that it ran (1987-88 season...ish). It might have been part of Muller's or a previous employees collection. If you also remember, in the early 1990's, 425 also wore a Pennsylvania passenger whistle, and a similar Reading 6-chime to the one on it now.
I am so glad that the 425 is up and running whistle sounds great cant wait to ride behind it maybe they will start to work on the 2102 now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If this was put to music, it would be Last Train to Trancentral. In fact this engine would be perfect for their music video if they wanted to redo it.
Ain't she beautiful? Was that you who was flying by on Rt. 61 at 80 MPH to keep the chase going? LOL. Nice job! When and where can we see more of her?
Great job! I caught it myself yesterday with a friend, we had no idea it was even out..Ive seen your videos before, excellent quality and just an all together smooth video.
