This masterpiece skit would never work in the US version because the majority of the audience would not really relate to it.

@IllussionMan like you say, british is darker... but it's more than that. it's simply more intelligent. the tiny, seemingly inconsequential details of a show like the office (british) would go completely unnoticed in america (or perhaps even italy, where they go for plundering slapstick). the american version of this show is so startlingly UNintelligent, it is amazing (aside from the heaps of cash they must get) the gervais and merchant can stand it.

See Lost or Prison Break for examples - both decent dramas that dragged on for too long and it ruined it.
